Chapter 284: Unexpected
Flames erupted into the sky, having been concealed within the void before suddenly manifesting as the Immortal Spirit Stones appeared. This took everyone completely by surprise.
Boom!
The blaze surged upward, instantly enveloping Ye Yun and the Immortal Spirit Stones. A majestic figure then materialized in the air—a fearsome lion’s head framed by wings as delicate as cicada wings, flapping rhythmically.
It was the True Fire Flying Lion!
“Ye Yun!” Su Yinxue cried out sharply. Her face paled the moment the beast appeared. The True Fire Flying Lion’s strength rivaled her father Su Hao’s. Its true fire could melt mountains, and with Ye Yun caught in its flames at such close range, survival seemed impossible.
“True Fire Flying Lion? How did this monster get here?” Duan Chenfeng clutched his head, disbelief etched across his face.
“Brother Ye, watch out!” Yu Minghong’s weak voice barely rose above a whisper, his injuries leaving him feeble.
Murong Wuhen and Jiang Shui Ning staggered back a hundred zhang, faces drained of color as they stared at the inferno swallowing Ye Yun. Though wounded and nearly powerless, they recognized the lethal danger—a single touch of those flames would reduce them to ash.
The others stood frozen, dread filling their eyes. They knew the flames devouring Ye Yun would soon turn on them, leaving no escape.
Only Su Ling remained still, her face pale but eyes shining with stubborn hope.
“Ye Yun, I know you won’t die this easily.”
Su Yinxue gripped her sister’s hand, channeling her depleted true qi to retreat. “Ling’er, we must go!”
Su Ling resisted, her gaze steady. “Even if we run, we can’t outpace its flames. Why do you doubt him?”
Su Yinxue glanced at the roaring fire. “How could he survive what even Father would struggle to withstand?”
Su Ling smiled softly. “He will.”
With a resigned sigh, Su Yinxue stayed. If her sister chose to face death here, she wouldn’t leave her side.
Duan Chenfeng and Yu Minghong limped over, fear in their eyes but resolve in their steps.
“Senior Sister Yinxue, you’re staying?” Yu Minghong whispered.
She nodded.
“Might as well,” Duan Chenfeng croaked between coughs. “Can’t run anyway. Better than being called cowards.”
Su Ling raised an eyebrow. “You’d flee first if you could.”
“Of course!” He grinned weakly. “But since I can’t…”
She understood. Behind his bluster lay loyalty—he’d never abandon comrades.
“Is Ye Yun dead?” she murmured.
Duan Chenfeng snorted. “That guy? Look—the flames cling tightly around him instead of spreading. The lion’s growling impatiently. He’s alive.”
The group stared. True enough, the fire now concentrated around Ye Yun, burning brighter. The beast’s restless roars confirmed it.
Su Yinxue studied Duan Chenfeng. Though he seemed reckless, his sharp observations had proven right before. Against all odds, hope flickered.
After a moment, Murong Wuhen and the others noticed the True Fire Flying Lion’s strange behavior and the flames’ failure to spread rapidly. Shock filled his and Jiang Shui Ning’s eyes as they whispered urgently. Suddenly, they began retreating with the remaining mobile disciples.
They were fleeing. They had no choice. If they didn’t seize this chance to escape now, it might soon be too late.
As leaders of their respective teams, Murong Wuhen and Jiang Shui Ning weren’t indecisive. After exchanging glances, they abruptly accelerated their retreat.
Just as expected, the True Fire Flying Lion didn’t even glance their way, let alone send flames chasing them. Within moments, both groups vanished into the distant rubble-filled woods.
Meanwhile, Jun Ruolan huddled with several disciples who pressed their palms against her back, channeling true qi into her body to heal her injuries.
Jun Ruolan could barely move, let alone fight. Her disciples dared not abandon her – even if they survived fleeing the Soul-Cutting Mountains, they knew Elder Shi’s cruel punishments awaited those who failed his treasured disciple.
True qi churned within Jun Ruolan as her wounds mended. She’d taken healing herbs and benefited from the Immortal Spirit Stone’s spiritual energy, accelerating her recovery.
When Murong Wuhen’s group fled, Jun Ruolan’s chaotic true qi finally stabilized.
She opened her eyes, gazing at the distant flames and the roaring True Fire Flying Lion. A strange gleam flashed in her starry eyes.
"Senior Sister Jun, what do we do now?" A female disciple’s anxious voice came from behind.
Jun Ruolan kept staring at the beast, absently clutching her life-saving jade talisman. For now, it remained unused.
She decided to wait. The true fire still burning around Ye Yun meant he survived – otherwise the lion wouldn’t be so agitated.
Jun Ruolan burned with curiosity. In mere hours, Ye Yun had repeatedly defied her expectations. Even Elder Shi would struggle against such flames. What treasure protected him?
Her fingers tightened on the talisman. If flames approached, she’d shatter it for teleportation, abandoning these disciples to save herself.
"Senior Sister! Murong’s group fled! Shouldn’t we…"
"Wait." Jun Ruolan cut them off. "The lion can’t harm Ye Yun. When they weaken each other, we’ll use thirty criminals’ combined strike to wound the beast. Then both Immortal Spirit Stones will be ours."
The four disciples’ eyes lit up at her words.
They’d seen the criminals’ power. A coordinated attack might overwhelm the lion, especially after its battle with Ye Yun. The promised rewards for securing the stones made their hearts race.
Above them, the True Fire Flying Lion roared. Red light burst from its forehead, striking the flames below.
Instantly, the conflagration solidified like a seal before collapsing into a transparent blue fireball.
Within the descending inferno stood a youth, hands clasped behind his back. Though blurred by flames, his calm demeanor shone through.
Impossible!
Su Yinxue and Jun Ruolan exchanged stunned glances, struggling to believe their eyes.
