Chapter 16: Your Heart Is Helpless! (2)
It is a [Field]!
But this [Field] is much more complete than that of the snake dragon’s. At least he can’t tell the difference between this snowfield and the real world.
The swordsman raised his head.
The girl in front of him was no longer “Bai Lian”, but a young woman with snow-white eyebrows and hair.
The woman was floating in the air, wearing a cold white robe, her legs exposed to the chill of the air.
At this moment, thousands of ice flowers drifted around her, like stars orbiting the center of the universe.
The swordsman looked up again.
Her face was as cold and solemn as a sculpture, yet it radiated a shocking beauty.
The most captivating feature was her right eye.
Ice blue flames rushed from the corner of that eye, tracing an enchanting path through the air.
She resembled a Snow Queen, a being who commands an endless expanse of snow.
This thought crossed the swordsman’s mind.
No, that can’t be true.
He shook his head violently.
If he truly believed it, he’d fall under the power of the [Field].
Tear her apart, kill her!
He convinced himself that Bai Lian’s Snow Queen form was merely an illusion, but to the people of Gucheng County, it was clear:
She was an emperor, an emperor who controlled frost and snow!
The woman in white, Taoist Ma, Ling Xuan, and the others stared at the figure floating in the air.
The woman in black reacted most violently.
Her body trembled uncontrollably.
“She, she, she… awakened part of her power from her previous life?”
At that moment, the truth dawned on her.
No wonder Bai Lian traveled thousands of miles from the Duxian sect to the Snow Sea. She was there to recover her lost strength!
How terrifying.
The search for healing medicine for her Shifu?
That was only a cover. Healing medicine could be found everywhere. Going to the Snow Sea was unnecessary.
“Your Elder Martial Brother is sure to lose!”
The woman in white nodded in agreement.
The pressure was nearly overwhelming. The Elder Martial Brother facing this force would be in an even worse state than her.
The swordsman’s heart sank.
“Get out of my way!”
He and his Heart Reading Sword turned into a purple streak and charged toward Bai Lian in the sky.
He attacked without holding back.
The sword Qi that tore through the air sent a torrent of snow over the Snow Sea, uprooting the very earth beneath.
But just as he was about to strike Bai Lian, an icicle burst from the ground, impaling him through both body and soul.
Boom.
The swordsman felt the cold seeping into his bones.
He was broken. Why had he fallen so quickly?
He couldn’t comprehend it.
He felt his life slipping away, and death was closer than ever. Was this the same sense of despair he had seen in Bai Lian’s right eye?
“My great wish has not been realized yet!”
With a final shudder, his body scattered across the sky.
After a moment of disorientation, the swordsman opened his eyes again.
He looked around in a daze.
He was still in the snowfield, and the snowy woman remained unchanged.
Was it all a hallucination?
“The feelings of those innocent magic beasts killed by you are the same as what you just experienced.”
Bai Lian’s cold voice pierced the stillness.
The swordsman didn’t seem to hear.
Once again, he charged at Bai Lian, sword raised, but once more, he was “killed” by the icicles appearing from nowhere.
Everything had returned to its starting point.
“I sympathize with your past, but that doesn’t justify inflicting pain on innocent magic beasts.”
“You don’t understand!”
The swordsman roared, his voice thick with frustration.
But as the cold snowflakes fell on his shoulders, he noticed something strange.
Though he wasn’t truly dead, there were clear scars where the icicles had pierced him in the [hallucinations].
Was this the power of the [Field]?
If he didn’t attack…
Suddenly, a cold white sword light swept by, severing his neck.
Moments later, the swordsman revived, touching his neck to find a bloodstain.
“You don’t understand!” Bai Lian said.
“If you only attacked evil magic beasts, no one would blame you. They would praise you.”
“You don’t understand!”
The swordsman repeated, his voice full of defiance, until his chest was pierced once more.
Bai Lian’s voice was cold, “What did those innocent magic beasts do wrong? What gives you the right to take their lives?”
“You don’t…”
The sword Qi surged, cleaving the swordsman in half.
“Because you’re stronger than them? Now, I’m stronger than you. I can play with your life however I wish.”
“You…”
The sword light fell again, turning the swordsman into a mess of flesh.
Bai Lian continued, “Miserable? There are many people more miserable than you. Did they ever lash out at innocent beings?”
“You don’t…”
The sword Qi shattered his body into pieces once more.
Bai Lian went on, “Take my Martial Sister, for example. She didn’t know who her parents were. An old man took her in, but no sect would accept her. She wanted to repay him, but he died when she was just nine years old.”
A nine-year-old child became helpless overnight.
Did she complain about the world?
“Never.”
Bai Lian’s mind drifted back to when the fifth Martial Sister left for the Duxian sect in the game.
With bright eyes, she observed the world as she walked from her hometown to Yao Xia Bay, encountering deception, violence, and indifference. Yet she still managed to smile and spread kindness wherever she went.
The only thing that bothered Bai Lian was that, since entering the Duxian sect, the fifth Martial Sister rarely smiled anymore.
The swordsman still shook his head, “You’re not me.”
Bai Lian hesitated but then swung the Dirt Free Sword, cutting him down once more.
But it was not enough.
“I don’t need to be you, and I can never be you!”
She tore a crack into the snowfield, pulling Young Master Cao and his cousin in from the rift.
“You didn’t know the eldest lady was poisoned, did you?”
The swordsman fell silent.
Bai Lian sneered.
The only way to deal with people like him was to break him, piece by piece, then drive the truth into his heart like a stake!
She threw a harsh look at Young Master Cao, who, under the pressure, quickly confessed the truth.
“It was her. It was her!” he pointed at his cousin. “She encouraged me to poison Li Niang!”
His cousin screamed, “Me? I only suggested it. You did it!”
Young Master Cao was furious, “You stinking bitch!”
Bai Lian cut them off, “I’m not interested in watching your petty squabbles.”
With a flick of her hand, she tossed them both away.
“What do you think? Does this plot seem familiar?”
She locked eyes with the swordsman.
The swordsman clenched his teeth.
No, no, no…
This world is wrong, and so is the world outside.
I am wrong, Bai Lian is wrong, everyone is wrong.
None of them are right.
His grip tightened around his Heart Reading Sword. He was holding the hilt, but his palm bled freely, the blood soaking into the snow.
Another sword light fell, killing him once more.
But this time, the swordsman didn’t feel pain.
“Wrong, everything is wrong!”
The blood dripping onto the snow seemed to burn, and he felt as if flames were consuming him, like a demon emerging from the abyss.
50% evil ideas + 50% paranoia = 100% darkness.
The swordsman’s spirit Qi surged.
He stubbornly broke through the threshold and, within moments, entered the Transcendency Stage.
Bai Lian took a deep breath, “If this is all your strength, let me break your sword!”
In her Snow Queen form, she was not inferior to any cultivator at the Transcendency Stage. Though she had limits, she was still far stronger than the swordsman, who had just reached the Transcendency Stage by force.
She abandoned the Dirt Free Sword and flew toward him, striking him in the face.
Be shattered.
Collapse.
Crush.
She didn’t hold back, using everything she had in every blow. She knew it wouldn’t be enough to kill him, but she was determined to break his pride—his most treasured strength.
Bang.
In an instant, Bai Lian grabbed the swordsman’s Heart Reading Sword.
A brutal knee strike followed.
Click—
The swordsman watched in amazement as his Heart Reading Sword shattered in Bai Lian’s grip, the pieces thrown into the snow and crushed under her feet.
“Your heart is helpless. Why don’t you break it and reforge it?”
Her words echoed in his ears.
His sword, his pride, all of it lay broken at his feet.
Putong.
The swordsman knelt in the snow.
He couldn’t see or hear anything. He just thought the world was so cold.
