Chapter 13: Really? I Don’t Believe It! (2)
Anyway, he’s got the money.
If one or two members of the Cao family die at that time, they’ll have no choice but to spend even more to seek his help again! This is what they call “making money!”
What a scheme!
Taoist Ma regretted everything now.
He swore to himself that if he made it out alive, he would hide in the Taoist Temple and not step outside for at least half a year.
“Demon!” Taoist Ma cleared his throat and spoke solemnly. “If you give up now, I can send you peacefully to reincarnation after your death. But if you continue to resist, I will have no choice but to use ‘that method.’ Once I do, no one will be able to save you!”
The cat demon completely ignored Taoist Ma.
Her eyes, tinged with a faint redness, were filled with urgency as she addressed a man standing in the front yard.
“Young Master Cao, I swear I didn’t harm the eldest lady! Please, let me save her. Her condition is critical. If you keep delaying, she’ll surely die!”
Young Master Cao remained silent, but the young woman standing beside him lashed out first.
“You vile demon! It’s all your fault! My sister-in-law was perfectly fine before. If you hadn’t harmed her, how could she have ended up like this?”
She punctuated her anger by pinching Young Master Cao’s waist.
Another woman, the one who had invited Taoist Ma, chimed in.
“You wretched demon! You hurt my daughter-in-law, and you deserve to die for it!”
Young Master Cao sighed heavily. “Qingping, Li Niang treated you with nothing but kindness. I never imagined you’d repay her like this… And yet, you’re still stubborn enough to deny it.”
He turned decisively. “Taoist Ma, please proceed.”
Taoist Ma smirked, full of false confidence. “Once this demon is dealt with, your wife will recover!”
“Young Master Cao…”
The cat demon’s expression fell into despair. Her anxiety grew unbearable.
She had finally discovered a way to save the eldest lady, but her path was blocked by a cultivator.
No matter how much she explained, the Cao family refused to believe her.
But time was running out. If the eldest lady’s soul dispersed, even the intervention of an Immortal wouldn’t be able to save her.
The cat demon gritted her teeth.
She didn’t want to resort to drastic measures, but she had no choice. She had to save the eldest lady first—everything else could come later.
Suddenly, the cat demon’s body was surrounded by a dazzling green light.
The light emanated from her feet, quickly spreading to dye her hair green.
“Dammit!”
Taoist Ma’s expression shifted drastically.
The cat demon had clearly activated some secret technique, and her strength surged.
Before he could react, a claw struck his chest, slamming him into the ground with a loud crash.
“I’m dead!”
Taoist Ma was terrified. He realized he couldn’t stop the cat demon in her current state.
But to his surprise, she didn’t target him or attack Young Master Cao and his companions.
Instead, she leapt over the high wall separating the front and back yards, rushing toward the room where the eldest lady lay.
Young Master Cao yelled in panic, “Taoist Ma! That demon is going to harm my wife!”
The matriarch of the Cao family shrieked, “Stop her! Don’t let her touch my daughter-in-law!”
Taoist Ma wiped the sweat off his brow. He wanted to flee but dared not.
If he ran now, his reputation would be in ruins.
Just then, a little girl’s voice pierced the chaos.
“That sister isn’t a bad person!”
All eyes turned toward the source of the voice. It was Ling Xuan, perched conspicuously on Bai Lian’s shoulders.
Ling Xuan hopped down.
“Be careful!” Bai Lian called out, worried.
Ling Xuan boldly stepped forward, ignoring the tension in the air.
She repeated herself, “That sister isn’t bad! Last night, I saw her holding the eldest lady’s hand, promising to save her!”
Young Master Cao frowned. “Whose child is this? Leave at once! If you get hurt, don’t blame me.”
But Ling Xuan wasn’t intimidated.
“The big sister said she wanted the eldest lady to be happy. She even put her hand here!”
Ling Xuan gestured to her chest, her flat, childish frame making the movement unintentionally comical.
“…”
The crowd was momentarily speechless. Was the little girl joking?
Ling Xuan raised her voice. “If that big sister wanted to hurt the eldest lady, she could have done it last night! Why would she wait until now?”
“That makes sense,” someone murmured.
“Not all demons are bad. Haven’t you heard the story of the fox demon who repaid the scholar’s kindness?”
Whispers of doubt rippled through the crowd.
But Young Master Cao wasn’t swayed.
“That doesn’t prove anything! Why did Li Niang suddenly fall ill, then? And how do we know you’re not lying? You could be working with the demon!”
“Nonsense!” Ling Xuan glared at him.
Young Master Cao shouted, “Taoist Ma, do something!”
Taoist Ma, utterly fed up, cursed inwardly. Why don’t you deal with it yourself?!
He hesitated. Siding with the little girl seemed less dangerous than fighting the cat demon again.
Forcing a smile, he said, “This little girl seems honest. Maybe this is all just a misunderstanding.”
Young Master Cao’s expression darkened.
“Taoist Ma, this is a matter of life and death. If you’re wrong, Li Niang—”
Taoist Ma cut him off in frustration.
“Why don’t you kill the demon yourself?!”
But, under pressure, Taoist Ma raised his peach wood sword again.
Young Master Cao ordered his guards, “Catch that girl! If she’s in league with the demon, kill her immediately!”
The guards rushed forward, confident they could handle a mere child.
To everyone’s astonishment, Ling Xuan fought them off with ease, her small fists sending grown men flying.
She pointed angrily at Young Master Cao.
“You’re just unreasonable! Do you even care about your wife?!”
Bai Lian smiled faintly. Ling Xuan had clearly absorbed her words.
Master Cao, however, retreated.
“This is my family’s business! Stay out of it!”
“Taoist Ma, deal with her!”
Grateful for the excuse, Taoist Ma approached Ling Xuan.
Smiling falsely, he said, “Little girl, I won’t let harm come to good people. You can trust me.”
Ling Xuan stared him down. “Really?”
“Of course!”
“I don’t believe you!”
Taoist Ma’s face twisted in anger. “How dare you?!”
As he raised his hand to strike her, a brilliant sword light shot from the west.
Shua!
The light struck the backyard like thunder.
When it faded, a young man in a light purple robe stood in its place, three swords strapped to his back, his aura fierce and commanding.
“I heard there’s a demon here?”
Bai Lian’s expression grew serious.
The man was a cultivator at the peak of the Soul Changing Stage
