Chapter 12: I Am Waiting for You to Return in the World of Mortals
The beautiful cat demon walked to the window with a slight tremor.
Facing the cold pond outside, a deep loneliness and endless emptiness surged in her heart.
She was dissatisfied.
It was just the beginning, yet it was almost over.
Whose fault was it?
It must be the fault of the world.
Yes.
It had to be the fault of this damn world!
The gentle people never got a good ending, while the wicked thrived, living well even after committing countless sins.
The cat demon gently wiped the tears from her cheek, a blush appearing on her face.
“Miss, wait for me!”
After softly kissing the sick lady’s hand, the cat demon suddenly leaped onto the windowsill.
By then, she had transformed into a petite white cat.
She turned back one last time before quickly disappearing into the backyard flowers.
Rustle——
After a few swift jumps, the cat demon’s figure vanished into the night.
But Bai Lian knew she was heading straight for the city wall of Gucheng County.
Lily flowers.
They were lovely.
This was not the classical cultivation world often seen in web novels.
In this world, love between humans and demons bore no ill consequences for people.
Excessive indulgence might lead to backaches, kidney weakness, or even death, but it had nothing to do with demons.
Bai Lian glanced at the sick lady.
Her medical skills were unremarkable among cultivators.
Yet, compared to mortal doctors, she was more than competent. With just one look, she could tell the lady was poisoned.
Poison was notoriously hard to detoxify.
But that was only true for ordinary people.
For a cat demon, it should be effortless.
Bai Lian’s eyes fell on the newly appeared task:
[Task 1: Go out and cure the lady (Reward: Hard Skill +2)]
[Task 2: Act as if you saw nothing (Reward: Light Skill +1)]
Bai Lian decisively chose Task 2.
Not because Task 1 was risky.
Neither task posed any danger to her.
She simply wanted the cat demon to heal the lady herself. It would be far more meaningful for both of them.
Perhaps it could lead to a marriage?
Bai Lian smiled at her fifth Martial Sister.
Meanwhile, Ling Xuan was deep in thought.
Can women do “intimate things” together?
It seemed… possible.
Ling Xuan walked slowly toward the end of the street.
Suddenly, a loud cry came from a nearby house.
A woman’s voice called out, “Taoist Priest, we’re counting on you!”
A Taoist priest?
Bai Lian turned to look.
Surrounded by a crowd was the Taoist priest she had seen near the bridge earlier.
He was now dressed in an ornate Taoist robe.
In his left hand, he held a peachwood sword, while his right hand gripped two blurred seal characters.
He shook his head solemnly and reassured the woman, “Do not worry, benefactress. I shall exorcise the demon!”
With a serious expression, he strode toward the backyard.
What followed was his personal performance.
He conjured a ball of fire from thin air.
“This move is called the Great Void Skill!”
He spat water from his mouth.
“This move is the Golden Sea of Bitterness!”
He brandished his sword.
“And this one is Chaos Seed Green Lotus!”
The maids and guards accompanying the woman gasped in amazement.
“Taoist Ma, you’ve truly inherited the powers of the God of Thunder!”
“Kill the demon!”
The woman’s eyes sparkled with hope.
This investment was paying off!
Look—
Taoist Ma’s [Great Dark Gold Sword Qi] sliced a peach tree ten meters away into splinters.
Not one of the previous fraudsters they had hired was even a tenth as skilled as Taoist Ma.
“Get out of my way!”
Taoist Ma suddenly rushed forward with his sword, shoving a waitress aside.
The onlookers were stunned as they watched him battle furiously against an invisible demon.
Tinkle——
For a moment, the backyard was filled with the sound of tinkles.
Bang.
Suddenly, Taoist Ma flew backward and landed on the ground with a thud.
He hurriedly shouted, “Hurry! Get out of here! The demon is powerful—I’m afraid I can’t protect you!”
“Yes!” The woman bolted, her voice trailing behind her. “Taoist Ma, don’t hurt yourself!”
“Thank you. I have been practicing this art for many years. I know how to handle it!”
Taoist Ma stood up and circled a tree, his expression grave and determined.
Ling Xuan had also returned.
She perched on the wall, watching Taoist Ma struggle fiercely against the invisible demon.
“How amazing!”
“Kill that wicked demon!”
“Be careful!”
Ling Xuan clenched her fists. Her dream was to become a heroine who punished evildoers and slew demons. Unfortunately, she couldn’t cultivate and could only cheer for those who fought against them.
Suddenly, an honest maid standing outside the backyard asked, “Is Taoist Ma really fighting a demon? Why can’t I see anything?”
Another maid beside her snapped, “What do you know? You can’t see the demon because you lack wisdom!”
“Huh?”
“The demon has a blue face, long fangs, and six arms. It’s holding a thick, steaming red lance!”
“Yes, yes…” The once-honest maid now looked panicked. She exclaimed, “Ah, I see it too! It’s terrifying! If I got stabbed by that lance…”
From afar, Bai Lian didn’t know how to respond.
Are they reenacting ‘The Emperor’s New Clothes’?
He really was Taoist Ma from the Tongtian Taoist Temple—a true genius in theatrics!
If his sword qi could only cut down a tree, could that really be called ‘Great Dark Gold Sword Qi’? By that logic, Bai Lian’s punch should be called ‘Ragnarok’!
Bai Lian decided to add a bit more challenge to Taoist Ma’s performance.
Her spiritual qi shot out like an arrow and struck Taoist Ma’s knee.
“Ah—!”
Taoist Ma let out a scream and fell to the ground.
His dramatic fall immediately alarmed the onlookers.
“Taoist Ma!”
“Don’t come near!”
Taoist Ma scrambled to his feet, looking around nervously.
Damn it!
Is there really a demon?
Fear gripped him, but he didn’t dare to turn and flee. Instead, he forced himself to continue attacking the tree in front of him with exaggerated effort.
It wasn’t until he had poked the tree through that Taoist Ma began to look around nervously.
He started to wonder if he was hallucinating.
“Maybe I just accidentally hit my leg,” he muttered to himself.
Turning to the people outside, he said, “Don’t worry, everyone. The demon is injured and won’t come back for a while.”
“Taoist Ma, is the demon still alive?” someone asked anxiously.
Taoist Ma sighed dramatically. “Is it so easy to kill a demon? We must take a long-term approach.”
The woman quickly turned to a maid she trusted and instructed, “Talk with Taoist Ma about what we should do next.”
Taoist Ma nodded slightly, his lips curling into a subtle smile.
Not bad. Tonight, it’s time for that maid to witness my ‘strength’!
Late that night, Ling Xuan, having no money to stay at an inn, made her way to the county government.
She found a clean spot to huddle up.
For her, this was routine. She had long since adapted to such conditions.
Her sleep was always light, ready to respond to any sudden disturbances. But tonight, the world was unusually quiet, and she faintly felt as though she had come near a source of warmth.
Such comfortable autumn nights were rare.
In her dreams, Ling Xuan’s expression softened, her face serene.
Bai Lian, standing nearby, felt her heart relax slightly.
[She’s so cute.]
Bai Lian stood quietly, the spirit qi surrounding her gently wrapping around Ling Xuan like a protective cocoon.
No one can harm the Fifth Martial Sister here!
“I’ll wait for you,” Bai Lian whispered softly.
She stayed by Ling Xuan’s side throughout the night.
At dawn, Bai Lian received a message from the Second Martial Sister.
[Elder Martial Sister, tomorrow we’re going to take part in the sect test!]
Bai Lian replied with a firm warning: [Don’t put yourself in any danger. I’ll give you a big surprise when I return!]
She turned her gaze to the still-sleeping Ling Xuan, a faint smile gracing her lips.
Surprise?
After learning that Elder Martial Sister Bai Lian was a reincarnated Immortal Emperor, Xiao Jinse had come to see many things differently.
That “surprise” probably wouldn’t surprise her much anymore.
Not that it mattered. She didn’t care about surprises, as long as Elder Martial Sister Bai Lian returned safely!
[I’ll wait for you to come back.]
[And then I’ll give you a big hug!]
As morning broke, Bai Lian quietly bought breakfast and waited for Ling Xuan to wake up.
When Ling Xuan finally opened her eyes, she looked at Bai Lian groggily. But before she could fully process the scene, a red glow in the distance caught her attention.
“What’s over there?” Ling Xuan asked, her curiosity piqued.
Without waiting for an answer, she darted off toward the source of the light.
Bai Lian already knew what was happening. The cat demon had returned and was now locked in battle with Taoist Ma.
