Chapter 11: Years of Lily Blooming (2)
“Why are you following me?”
Ling Xuan glared at Bai Lian, her eyes slightly narrowed and her lips tightly pressed together as if trying to appear fierce.
Bai Lian smiled gently.
Good, at least she’s willing to talk now.
Bai Lian had worried that the little girl might ignore her completely, which would have made her feel like nothing more than a clown chasing after shadows.
“Can you tell me your name?” Bai Lian asked.
“Ling Xuan,” the girl replied curtly.
Just as I thought!
Bai Lian’s heart skipped a beat.
This must be fate!
It felt like destiny—just like when she met her fourth Martial Sister. This time, Bai Lian vowed not to let the opportunity slip away. She couldn’t afford to miss out on bringing Ling Xuan, the fifth Martial Sister, back to the sect!
Bai Lian’s smile deepened, and even her eyes sparkled with warmth. “Ling Xuan, you’re a martial arts genius!”
“Well, I know that,” Ling Xuan said, nodding matter-of-factly.
After all, not many people her age could survive and take care of themselves the way she had.
“…”
Bai Lian continued, “If you follow me back to the sect to cultivate, you’ll have a chance to break through the void and ascend to the Immortal World one day.”
Ling Xuan couldn’t help but laugh, her expression shifting to one of amusement. She raised her hand as if about to mock Bai Lian but stopped herself when she remembered how strong the woman appeared.
“No way. That’s impossible,” she said dismissively.
“I’m serious!” Bai Lian insisted.
Ling Xuan scoffed. ╭(╯^╰)╮
She doesn’t get it.
No one understood her weaknesses better than she did. Her grandfather had once taken her to a nearby sect to see if they would accept her. During her talent assessment, she received the harsh verdict: “The worst talent I’ve ever seen.”
“No one can afford to feed you!” the disciple had sneered.
Her grandfather’s face had turned green with anger, though his fury wasn’t directed at her. It was the disciple’s arrogant attitude that infuriated him.
That day, her grandfather was struck by someone from the sect and bedridden for several days.
But Ling Xuan hadn’t been too upset.
It didn’t matter if she couldn’t cultivate. She never let that incident make her bitter, nor did she swear vengeance against the sect. To her, it was the fault of one arrogant disciple, not the entire sect.
Ling Xuan believed in making clear distinctions. Not every protagonist had to be fueled by rage or driven to punish everyone who looked down on them.
“I really can’t do it,” Ling Xuan said firmly. “I’ve tried, and I can’t cultivate at all. Go find someone else. I don’t have anything to offer you. No matter how hard you try, these coppers are all I have.”
She opened her small hand, revealing the few coppers she had left, and held them out to Bai Lian.
“You can take them all,” she said, her voice resolute.
Bai Lian felt a pang of sadness as she looked at Ling Xuan’s earnest expression.
A child this age should be safe in her mother’s arms, not struggling to survive like this.
Bai Lian gently pushed Ling Xuan’s hand back and shook her head. “I don’t want your money. And I wasn’t talking about cultivating in the traditional sense. Even if you can’t cultivate, with your innate abilities, you have the potential to excel in martial arts.”
“Oh.”
Ling Xuan’s interest waned instantly.
I don’t get it. This is too complicated.
Right now, all she wanted was a good meal to make up for the dreary days when she had nothing but potatoes to eat.
Bai Lian tried again. “I’m not lying to you. I’m Bai Lian of the Duxian Sect. This star around my eye is proof.”
She raised her hand and wiped away the simple magical array concealing the ★ on her face.
The ★ shone brightly, momentarily dazzling Ling Xuan.
She had to admit, the big sister in front of her was very beautiful.
But…
“Never heard of it,” Ling Xuan said honestly.
“…”
Alright, fair enough.
Not every cultivator had heard of Bai Lian, let alone ordinary people.
Ling Xuan tilted her head and asked tentatively, “Big Sister, can I leave now?”
Bai Lian sighed and nodded silently.
Telling her the truth doesn’t work. Do I really have to resort to lying to win over the fifth Martial Sister?
Her head began to ache at the thought.
She had done something similar before—that was how she ended up kidnapping her third Martial Sister. But back then, she had no choice. The third Martial Sister had resisted fiercely, and Bai Lian had been forced to use strength to calm her down.
But this was different. The fifth Martial Sister was just a child.
Bai Lian watched Ling Xuan walk away.
She didn’t follow. There was no need. With her Divine Sense, Bai Lian could track the fifth Martial Sister even if she ran a thousand miles away.
After parting ways, Ling Xuan wandered aimlessly through the city.
She stopped in front of an inn, hesitated for a moment, and then turned away.
No money.
Eventually, she came to a halt outside a brightly lit courtyard.
Her attention was caught by a voice from within.
Bai Lian extended her Divine Sense toward the source of the sound.
In a dimly lit room illuminated by flickering candlelight, a maid knelt beside a bed. Lying on the bed was a woman, her face pale and her body limp, as if she might die at any moment.
The maid held the woman’s hand tightly, her voice trembling with desperation. “Madam, I will find a way to save you.”
At first, everything seemed normal. But soon, Bai Lian noticed something peculiar.
The maid was clearly a cat demon.
And…
She took the woman’s hand and placed it on her chest.
“When you recover, let’s leave this place together. I’ll do my best to make you happy. I even know the art of body transformation…”
Bai Lian’s expression froze. “…”
Ling Xuan, who was crouched on the wall watching, scratched her head in confusion.
The art of body transformation?
She reached out and touched her own chest. Still flat.
How strange these two are!
