Chapter 34: You Are a Saint Today! (1)
Cheek.
The door swung open.
Bai Lian stood on the trampled snow-covered ground, right in front of the door.
Usually, Xuezhan would raise her head from the chair and offer a kind greeting. However, at this moment, she lay motionless in the bamboo chair. If she hadn’t rested her right hand and head on the handrail, she would have fallen to the cold ground.
“Xuezhan!”
Bai Lian hurried over and gently took hold of Xuezhan’s wrist. It was chilly, just like her own physique. No—Xuezhan’s physique was even cooler than hers. Though Bai Lian didn’t know why, her own body was no longer as cold as a corpse.
Bai Lian frowned, noting that Xuezhan was still breathing. She turned her head to examine the bed beside her. Various medicines were scattered across it, and bright red stains marked the sheets—blood from Xuezhan’s body.
“Didn’t she take the medicine pills?”
Bai Lian counted the pills. Indeed, Xuezhan hadn’t taken any of them. Knowing she was going to die, had Xuezhan simply given up? She had less than half an hour before death would claim her completely.
Bai Lian remained silent. If she were the one making the choice, she would choose to live. She wanted to live, even if only for an hour. One could only have hope while living; death left nothing.
Bai Lian picked up a Revive Pill. She sat by the bed and gently took Xuezhan into her arms, as if cradling a sick daughter. Looking down, she saw Xuezhan’s mouth was tightly shut, with traces of blood around it.
Bai Lian wiped the blood with her thumb, then suddenly froze. She saw a smile!
Perhaps it was just an illusion. No! Fairy Bai Lian never believed in illusions! The smile had probably appeared when she’d wiped the corners of Xuezhan’s mouth. She didn’t know this would be her last memory of Xuezhan’s smile before death.
This wasn’t the time for such thoughts. Bai Lian held the Revive Pill and placed it into Xuezhan’s mouth with her finger. The pill dissolved instantly, but she didn’t hurry to withdraw her finger. Only after all the medicinal energy had dissolved into Xuezhan’s body did Bai Lian begin to pull away.
Just as her finger was about to leave Xuezhan’s lips, Xuezhan stirred, eyes still closed. Her teeth nibbled, clamping down on Bai Lian’s finger like gentle pincers, making it difficult to pull away.
“…”
Bai Lian was taken aback. She felt the warm, wet tongue licking her fingers, reminiscent of someone eating a lollipop.
“Ah.”
Xuezhan’s eyes flew open, and she recoiled in panic. Duang~ Her head collided with a pair of “mounds.” Her body tensed, and she became too afraid to move.
Bai Lian calmly used magic to wipe the saliva from her fingers and said, “You are awake.”
Xuezhan sighed and bowed her head. “White Emperor Bai Lian, why did you give me those medicines? Just let me leave quietly. It’s better not to cause trouble for anyone.”
Bai Lian shook her head. She didn’t want to argue with Xuezhan over trivial matters. She wasn’t a Saint, just a kind-hearted ordinary person. In this final hour, all she wanted was to see Xuezhan laugh genuinely.
Didn’t Xuezhan ever feel lonely and desire companionship? Let her be Xuezhan’s friend for an hour!
“Do you have any unfulfilled desires?” Bai Lian inquired.
Xuezhan’s mouth fell slightly open. She noticed a determined gleam in Bai Lian’s eyes. Since resistance was futile, she might as well relax and accept the experience.
Xuezhan slowly closed her eyes and said, “If it’s alright with you, I would like to return to the place where I was born.”
“The place where you were born?” asked Bai Lian. “You mean?”
“The Spirit of Snow.”
Bai Lian understood. Xuezhan had indeed regained her lost memories.
“Okay.”
Though Bai Lian wasn’t certain of the exact location, she suspected it must be in the northernmost part of the snowfield, where deep valleys and glaciers lay. They would determine more once they arrived.
Bai Lian embraced Xuezhan and stepped out into the gusting wind and snow. At the stream, she noticed the turtle was already facing northward.
“Fairy Bai Lian, I will take you there,” the turtle offered.
“Thank you, Master Turtle.”
Bai Lian rose and leaped onto the turtle’s back, informing it of their destination. Distance posed no challenge for the turtle, as it could quickly traverse great spans using the Space Shrinking spell multiple times.
As it strode through the clouds, its heart swelled with emotion. Indeed, both master and disciple were outstanding individuals! From its perspective, Bai Lian and An Lan were essentially identical in nature.
Bai Lian acted like a Saint. An Lan, too, had solved the issue with the kelp without expecting any reward. The only distinction lay in Bai Lian being more articulate in expressing her thoughts than An Lan—though the difference was slight!
Yet such small differences often proved defining.
“We’ve reached your destination, Fairy Bai Lian.”
The turtle’s voice carried across the air.
She looked ahead immediately. The glacier was massive. Finding Xuezhan’s birthplace wouldn’t be difficult with enough time.
Unfortunately, Bai Lian estimated she only had seven fifteen-minute increments left. How could one create miracles in just seven fifteen-minute increments?
[System!]
The system remained unresponsive. How could it not help during this critical moment?
Bai Lian grew irritated. She had to release her Divine Sense to conduct a thorough search. However, after searching for a while, the turtle provided feedback.
“Fairy Bai Lian, where are you searching?”
Bai Lian promptly showed the turtle the image of Xuezhan’s birthplace.
“Is this place connected to Miss Xuezhan?” the turtle inquired.
“That’s right.”
The turtle nodded and said, “Let me make a divination!”
“Divination?”
The turtle laughed. “I’ve been practicing it for a while now, and I think I’m pretty good at it.”
Its divination had only failed twice. Once when it tried to divine its own destiny, and An Lan came to its rescue. Another time, it had attempted to divine for An Lan, but the backfire from the Great Tao nearly killed it. It had only managed to glimpse a vague picture before losing consciousness: An Lan lying on the ground with a ball of white light pressing down on her!
It was hard to determine whether the divination had been favorable or unfavorable, but based on the image, An Lan hadn’t seemed to be in danger.
The turtle set Bai Lian down and began dancing wildly, its large head stretching and shrinking. The result was gratifying, though it looked rather peculiar.
“Get out… now!”
A golden light illuminated the turtle’s back. Guided by it, Bai Lian located Xuezhan’s birthplace in just fifteen minutes.
Though it appeared ordinary, it was actually a glacier canyon. At first glance, it seemed covered with ice prisms. Without prior knowledge, one would never expect that a one-of-a-kind Spirit of Snow had been born here.
“White Emperor Bai Lian, I want to rest here.”
Xuezhan’s voice had grown weak, making speech difficult.
“Hmm.”
Bai Lian’s face darkened slightly as she placed Xuezhan on the ground.
