Chapter 33: Bai Lian, the Immortal Emperor and Natural Saint! (1)
Most people are born with a set of expectations.
Some parents wish for their children to live a secure life.
Others dream of their children attaining promotion and financial success.
Some hope for their children to become revered emperors, admired by all.
And there are those who want their children to fulfill the dreams they themselves couldn’t achieve.
Xuezhan was born with the latter kind of expectation.
A long time ago, beneath the light of the sun and the moon, in an endless snowfield that stretched for miles, an extraordinary event unfolded.
After an intricate web of strange, essential forces aligned, a pure white Snow Spirit came into being.
This was no simple tale. It was an absurd drama filled with unlikely coincidences.
Just as humanity’s ancestors rose from ignorance to become masters of the world, so too did the Snow Spirit emerge.
If this miracle could be named, it could only be called one thing:
Miracle!
If it had a color, it would surely be white.
Thus, the nameless Snow Spirit began its journey through life.
Like a dandelion carried by the wind, it floated away from the glacier. But unlike a dandelion, it had no ambitions of its own.
Hope? What was that?
It didn’t need to land to sow or reproduce.
It simply kept floating, and floating.
On its journey, it witnessed many things.
Pine trees draped in frost, snow wolves licking their wounds in solitude, white foxes battling for food, and snow leopards huddled together.
Though these creatures seemed lonely, the Spirit of Snow always found something familiar in them after wandering for a time.
Days passed.
Then months.
Then years.
Then centuries.
The Spirit of Snow had hoped to find a group of Snow Spirits on the other side of the mountains and seas—spirited and clever, mischievous yet easily influenced.
But no matter how far it searched, it found no other Snow Spirits.
A dream remained just that—a dream.
In its world, it was the only one.
Then came a moment of clarity.
It is I who am truly alone.
The Spirit of Snow pondered its existence, but found no meaning in it.
Could it, alone, make the world a better place?
No. It had never been welcomed by anything it had come close to.
Though it may bring a moment of light, it was still bitterly cold.
When it appeared, even the deer that once leisurely walked would flee at once.
The creatures scattered, each running in different directions.
If I cannot make the world better, then let me destroy it!
But, much to its dismay, the Spirit of Snow was too weak to accomplish anything.
It tried to freeze a river, intending to deprive the creatures of water.
But all it managed was to freeze a small patch, not affecting the fish at all. Instead, it created a bridge for creatures to joyfully cross.
It aimed at a giant snowball atop a mountain, hoping to create an avalanche that would bury all creatures nearby.
But it couldn’t figure out how to dislodge the snowball.
Too weak.
This task was beyond its reach.
With sadness, the Spirit of Snow retreated into a crevice atop the mountain.
Perhaps a heavy snowfall will help me soon.
After an overnight snowstorm, the rock crevices were buried.
The Spirit of Snow shrank back, guarding the light from her body.
She wasn’t bored.
She had always lived in solitude, shadowboxing her own thoughts.
This life was fine; after all, she had no friends.
Outside, the wind started and stopped in unpredictable bursts.
The Spirit of Snow lost track of time.
It must have been a long time.
Then, one day, she heard a rustling sound outside.
The snow had cleared away, and sunlight shone back into the crevice.
On a dark night, when only the white light from her body illuminated the area, the Spirit of Snow encountered the former Snow Spirit Lord.
A small white ball.
A tall figure, slightly bent.
It was a quiet night.
A delicate hand reached gently into the dark crevice.
Ice and snow began to melt.
Water poured from the crevice, pushing the Spirit of Snow out.
Before she understood what was happening, she was tightly embraced by the former Snow Spirit Lord.
For the first time, the Spirit of Snow felt warmth.
This was the first being that was not frightened by her presence.
Could this be the friend she had longed for?
Would someone finally stay close to her?
“…”
When that brilliant image froze, Bai Lian had a sudden realization.
Reality is truly cruel!
The Snow Spirit sees the former Snow Spirit Lord as a friend, yet the latter desires to be her mother.
Is it right to deceive the innocent Snow Spirit in this way?
Isn’t this absurd?
The shocking truth was that the former Snow Spirit Lord had indeed succeeded.
The Snow Spirit was brought into a magic array, thinking it was simply a bath.
But, instead, it turned out to be a form of brainwashing, not a bath.
Her memories were drawn out and placed into a new body.
And thus, after a series of events that Bai Lian could not fully understand, but which left her exhilarated, Xuezhan was born.
Xuezhan—daughter of the Snow Spirit Lord, eldest daughter of Wuheng Snow Valley, the owner of the Qianhuan Real Eyes, and an artificial life.
The former Snow Spirit Lord had pinned all her hopes of activating the Qianhuan Real Eye on Xuezhan.
The Snow Spirit was limitless in potential.
Her mental strength surpassed that of ten Snow Spirit Lords combined.
The former Snow Spirit Lord had not erased Xuezhan’s memories while she was still the Spirit of Snow.
Instead, she had hidden them deep within Xuezhan’s soul, to emerge only once she reached the Mahayana Stage in her cultivation.
And now, Bai Lian understood.
Xuezhan was not pretending to be pitiful—she truly was in a miserable state, even if she didn’t yet realize the depth of her suffering.
Despite knowing the former Snow Spirit Lord’s sinister motives, Xuezhan couldn’t resist.
Such is the law of the jungle.
While the East Divine Land is currently at peace, the imminent arrival of the Heaven and Earth Disaster will bring a swarm of “demons and monsters.”
People will cease to be human.
How can Elder Martial Sister Bai Lian, known for her righteousness, simply sit idly by?
I will destroy the Wuheng Snow Valley right now!
Just as Bai Lian was about to leave Xuezhan’s body, something caught her attention.
“Xuezhan?”
Bai Lian found Xuezhan, who had suddenly disappeared.
The little girl stood motionless, like a statue amidst the swirling chaos of her divine sense.
Bai Lian’s voice had no effect on her, as if she hadn’t heard a thing.
Bai Lian approached her immediately.
“Hello!”
Gently, she placed her right hand on Xuezhan’s shoulder.
But in that moment, Xuezhan’s body shattered into countless pieces, like broken glass, accompanied by a deafening crash.
