Chapter 5: Refuse? (2)
She had never imagined her master could be so furious. Perhaps An Lan might strike her down in a single blow.
Was it because her actions had provoked her master?
That must be it.
The tiger’s tail must not be touched, and An Lan was precisely such a tiger.
After all, An Lan was once the Immortal Heavenly Lord.
How dare a mere Bai Lian make decisions on behalf of the Immortal Heavenly Lord!
As these thoughts churned in her mind, new options materialized before Bai Lian:
[Task 1: Sneak away when your master isn’t paying attention. (Reward: Taigu Yiqi Kong-fu)]
[Task 2: Do nothing. (Reward: The drawing of the Ten Unique Array)]
[Task 3: Tell her what you have done in Heluo. (Reward: Hard Skill +3)]
The appearance of the tasks brought a sense of calm to Bai Lian.
[Hard Skill +3]
There’s always a way out!
It seemed that as long as she took the initiative to admit her mistake, her Shifu wouldn’t completely abandon her.
Choose Task 3.
The safest route.
At this moment, Bai Lian dared not play any tricks before An Lan.
“Shifu, I was wrong!”
Bai Lian recounted her experiences in Heluo, including her decision to bring Yu Ying to Qiongming Peak.
Of course, she left out any mention of the mysterious system.
“I shouldn’t have brought Yu Ying here without consulting you first. Shifu, if you want to punish me, I won’t resist. I submit myself to your judgment!”
Bai Lian’s expression was resolute.
As if to demonstrate her sincerity, she even turned halfway around, presenting her hips.
After all, she had acted without her master’s permission. If An Lan chose to punish her severely, she could hardly complain—it was her own fault.
Her only hope was that her master wouldn’t direct her anger at Yu Ying.
When Bai Lian finished speaking, silence filled the cave.
The wind had stopped.
The faint ticking sounds had vanished.
Even the rhythm of her heartbeat seemed to fade into the stillness.
Was this the calm before the storm?
Bai Lian shifted uneasily.
She forcibly pushed aside all stray thoughts, bracing herself for the inevitable storm.
Meanwhile, An Lan, who had only just regained her composure, found herself stunned once again.
She had missed the first part of Bai Lian’s explanation, but the second half alone was enough to piece together the situation.
The Fourth Younger Martial Sister?
What a revelation!
It turned out she hadn’t been mistaken. The Death Words on Bai Lian hadn’t been growing on their own—they were indeed tied to karma.
After An Lan had decided to stop accepting disciples, Bai Lian had secretly brought someone new to the peak, directly tying her own fate to another.
An Lan’s expression darkened as she stared at Bai Lian, her voice icy.
“The woman talking to that Yaoguang Rabbit… Is she the one you’re calling the Fourth Younger Martial Sister?”
She stressed the words “Fourth Younger Martial Sister” with sharp emphasis.
“Yes.”
Bai Lian nodded quickly, her movements stiff with tension.
You really went and did it!
An Lan slapped the stone bed with a resounding crack.
“You, you…”
Her finger trembled as she pointed at Bai Lian, but no coherent words followed.
“Do you know how worried I was about you?”
An Lan’s chest heaved violently as waves of emotions surged within her. She had been on the brink of planning a journey to the Immortal World to seek a way to erase the Death Words on Bai Lian.
But these words… she couldn’t bring herself to say them aloud.
“You traitor!”
Her voice trembled with anger as she raised her hand, bringing it down sharply on Bai Lian’s buttocks.
Pop!
The sharp crack echoed through the cave, but it didn’t end there.
The rainstorm had begun.
Bai Lian remained silent, her head bowed.
An Lan, however, was far from done. Her anger boiled over, and she wasn’t about to show mercy this time. Grabbing a ruler from the table, she struck again and again.
The cave filled with the sound of snapping wood as the ruler splintered into pieces under the force of her strikes.
Only after her outburst subsided did An Lan return to the bed, panting and glaring at Bai Lian with fiery eyes.
“Do you understand what you did wrong?”
“I understand, Shifu. I was wrong,” Bai Lian replied quietly.
An Lan waved her hand dismissively. “Go back. Next time, if you dare to repeat this kind of mistake, I will break your legs and lock you in the cave. No one will be able to plead for you.”
Bai Lian, knowing better than to argue further, bowed her head. But as she turned to leave, she hesitated, her voice soft yet resolute.
“Shifu, what about Yu Ying?”
An Lan’s expression hardened instantly.
“Send her away,” she snapped.
Despite her master’s stern tone, Bai Lian pressed on. “Shifu, perhaps you could take Yu Ying as your disciple? Our Qiongming Peak only has four people, which is far fewer than the other main peaks. Yu Ying is exceptionally talented, no less than my Second or Third Martial Sisters. And, Shifu… I feel she’s a perfect match for you.”
An Lan’s glare could have frozen lava. “Nonsense! Why should I?”
Her sharp reply made it clear there was no room for argument.
Bai Lian sighed inwardly. It seemed there was no convincing her master to accept Yu Ying.
“Then I will send Yu Ying to Master Yan Yue,” Bai Lian said reluctantly.
An Lan’s hand shot up. “Wait!”
“Shifu?”
An Lan’s tone grew harsher. “She cannot stay in the Duxian Sect.”
Bai Lian froze. “What? Why not?”
An Lan’s voice was resolute. “I said no, and that’s final!”
The unwavering determination in her master’s tone left Bai Lian stunned. Could it be that An Lan’s anger toward her had somehow extended to Yu Ying?
But then An Lan sighed, her voice softening just a fraction. “I’m doing this for your sake. You’ll understand someday.”
“For my sake?”
Bai Lian’s body stiffened. A realization struck her, but the thought was so implausible she hesitated to believe it. Could it be…
With trembling words, she asked tentatively, “Shifu, I don’t quite understand what you mean.”
An Lan’s sharp eyes bore into Bai Lian’s. She saw the resolve etched in her disciple’s gaze.
Finally, she spoke, her tone colder than ice.
“If I take Yu Ying as my disciple, you may die. Knowing this, do you still want to keep her?”
“…”
Bai Lian’s heart thudded in her chest as the weight of An Lan’s words sank in. Her master was genuinely concerned about her—concerned because the Death Words on her body were growing stronger.
A warmth spread through Bai Lian’s chest. Somewhere along the way, the barriers between her and her master had quietly crumbled.
An Lan sighed again. “It seems you’ve made your choice. Go ahead and send Yu Ying away.”
But Bai Lian shook her head.
There was no point in hiding it any longer.
This was her last stand.
A faint smile graced her lips as she said, “Shifu, I can see the Death Words on myself.”
“What did you just say?”
An Lan’s eyes widened, disbelief etched across her face. Had she misheard?
The cave fell into dead silence.
