Chapter 19: Looking for Tao in the World of Mortals (2)
Wen Su explained, “This is related to the beliefs of Nanwang Country. Of course, this rule only restricts ordinary people, not cultivators.”
Zhao Haiya nodded.
He couldn’t discern anything from Wen Su’s expression. He wasn’t sure if Wen Su was connected to the person from the Demon Sect, but it was better to remain cautious.
At that moment, Su Youwei suddenly pointed at the stone tablet with the words [Gongfang (Public Land)] carved on it and asked, “Isn’t this ‘Gong’ character wrong?”
Wen Su shook her head. “There’s no mistake. This ‘Gongfang’ refers to ‘eunuch’s land’.”
She even made a simple gesture.

“There are always men who try to enter the royal city. Once they’re caught, they are punished and turned into ‘eunuchs’.”
Um.
Bai Lian’s expression shifted slightly.
(。 ŏ_ŏ)
The atmosphere became strange.
Wen Su toyed with the Spirit Stone Zhao Haiya had given him. “The information I’ve provided isn’t worth a top-grade Spirit Stone. To make up for the difference, let me read your fortune, Brother Zhao.”
Zhao Haiya looked surprised. “You also know how to read fortunes by face?”
“A little.”
Wen Su studied Zhao Haiya’s face carefully, his expression turning increasingly serious.
After a moment, he said, “Brother Zhao should have been a short-lived man.”
Zhao Haiya’s expression became strange.
But Wen Su continued, “However, things have changed. Brother Zhao seems destined for a long life now.”
While saying this, Wen Su stole a few glances at Bai Lian.
This small action didn’t escape Bai Lian’s sharp eyes.
If Wen Su was connected to the person from the Demon Sect, he was being far too bold.
Bai Lian said, “Would you take a look at my face as well?”
Wen Su replied, “No problem.”
He stepped forward and stood quietly in front of her.
Suddenly, a speck of black appeared in his eye.
Drip.
Wen Su quickly pressed his hand against his right eye.
Bai Lian saw it clearly. A drop of blood rolled down from Wen Su’s eye.
“I was careless,” Wen Su said, shaking his head. “Let’s stop here for today. I have something to attend to.”
He turned and hurried away, unwilling to linger any longer.
What did he see?
Bai Lian stood there, momentarily stunned. Did he see the word Death?
The Third Younger Martial Sister couldn’t help but complain, “That man is so rude!”
“All right, don’t mind him,” Bai Lian said calmly.
She shifted her focus and began discussing with Zhao Haiya how to enter the royal city.
Zhao Haiya hesitated after hearing that no man was allowed inside the city.
“Elder Martial Brother Zhao, you could dress as a woman. A little makeup, and no one would notice.”
“No, no!” Zhao Haiya waved his hands in embarrassment.
Bai Lian smiled. “Let me go in and investigate.”
Zhao Haiya scratched his head. “Thank you, Fairy Bai Lian.”
It was clearly his responsibility to track the person from the Demon Sect, yet Bai Lian had agreed to take it on, leaving him feeling deeply embarrassed.
While they talked, the street suddenly became lively.
Bai Lian turned around and noticed something unusual.
Where Wen Su’s blood had dripped earlier, there should have been traces, but instead, there was only yellow sand the size of a fingertip.
Using her spirit Qi, she lifted the yellow sand, but there were no bloodstains beneath it.
“……”
A thought occurred to Bai Lian, but before she could delve further, Su Youwei’s voice interrupted her.
“It’s those people!”
Bai Lian looked up.
The army she had encountered earlier was entering through the city gates.
At the forefront was the man who had shouted “Rush with me!” during their last meeting. He was followed by ordinary soldiers, many of whom bore scars.
“They’re back! They’re back!”
Excited voices echoed on both sides of the long street.
In the crowd, a young woman wept as she embraced a soldier with a broken arm.
A little farther down, a gray-haired old man tightly held the hand of a middle-aged soldier.
But most of the onlookers stood silently, their eyes brimming with tears.
Glory belonged to the heroes who had dedicated themselves to their country!
Finally, the group arrived at the royal city.
Bai Lian looked up again.
A young woman with brown skin stood out among the crowd. She wore an elegant crown and was dressed regally.
She was likely the Queen of Nanwang Country.
After a brief handover ceremony, the Queen suddenly turned her head and looked directly at Bai Lian.
“Did she recognize me?”
Beside the Queen stood a man.
Bai Lian quickly averted her gaze, her face impassive.
Her attention was caught by a little girl standing near a candied haw vendor, her eyes filled with longing.
“Four strings of candied haws.”
Bai Lian walked over briskly and held up four fingers.
The vendor smiled. “All right!”
Bai Lian handed one of the strings to the little girl.
The girl stared at her in confusion.
Bai Lian reached out and patted her head. “Don’t eat too many of these. They’ll rot your teeth.”
She turned and rejoined Su Youwei and Zhao Haiya.
“Here you go.”
“Huh?” Zhao Haiya hadn’t expected to get one.
He recalled something the old man had said about Bai Lian. She was unlike any other cultivator he had met.
She seemed detached from the world yet always close to it.
“Sister, thank you!”
The little girl’s sweet voice rang out behind Bai Lian.
“It’s rare for us to be out. Let’s stroll around.”
Bai Lian took a bite of the candied haws and closed her eyes with satisfaction.
So sweet.
She decided there was no need to rush into the royal city. It would be better to walk around, complete some tasks, and earn a few skill points.
