Chapter 8: I Guard All of You! (Part 2)
“Well.”
Yu Ying hurriedly shook her head. “I like it.”
She might lack money for many things, but buying a paper windmill wasn’t one of them.
Su Youwei stopped paying attention to Yu Ying. Instead, her eyes shifted to the two pinwheels in Bai Lian’s hands—one meant for the second Martial Sister and the other for the jade rabbit.
But Bai Lian hadn’t bought one for herself.
Elder Martial Sister Bai Lian is always like this… no one should be left without!
Determined, Su Youwei gritted her teeth and ran to the roadside stall.
“Give me a windmill!”
—
Yu Ying didn’t even remember how she said goodbye to Bai Lian.
All she knew was that when she glanced back, the two figures had already disappeared.
It’s like… a dream that abruptly ended.
When she was at her lowest, a “North Star” had appeared, giving her a new goal to pursue.
But this wasn’t a dream.
She still held the blue paper windmill in her hand.
By the riverbank, Yu Ying slowly raised the pinwheel. The wind was rising, and she heard its soft clattering sound.
At that moment, she extended her free hand, pressing it gently against the black cloth covering her face. Slowly, her hand reached into the gap and lifted the fabric.
Her eyes were revealed—ordinary yet extraordinary.
They couldn’t hold the world or the sky, but they held the blue windmill spinning in her hand.
It would be wonderful if that Elder Sister—whose name I still don’t know—turned out to be the sword owner I’ve been looking for.
The river water gleamed under the moonlight as cheerful singing echoed from passing boats.
Yu Ying removed the black cloth entirely, gripping the paper windmill tightly.
Perhaps it was time to head somewhere else in a few days.
—
When Bai Lian returned to the inn, Xiao Jinse and the jade rabbit still hadn’t come back.
She didn’t have to wait long.
At five o’clock, Xiao Jinse entered with a bright smile, while the jade rabbit yawned and flopped onto the bed.
“Great harvest!” Xiao Jinse declared.
“Did you get all the materials for making pills?” Bai Lian asked as she handed the windmills to Xiao Jinse and the jade rabbit.
“Huh?” Xiao Jinse was surprised. She glanced at the windmill and then asked, “Elder Martial Sister, where’s yours?”
“Here.”
Bai Lian took out a light green windmill and shook it lightly.
Su Youwei, seated at the table, abruptly raised her head. “I bought that windmill for Elder Martial Sister!”
Xiao Jinse’s smile froze.
She had been careless—allowing the third Martial Sister to seize this opportunity.
Damn it! Xiao Jinse was angry, but she swallowed her frustration and put on a positive front.
She carefully tucked the windmill away and said, “Elder Martial Sister, I not only bought all the medicinal materials, but I also met a very powerful alchemist!”
Bai Lian raised an eyebrow. “Oh?”
Xiao Jinse began recounting her experience.
While purchasing ingredients, she had stumbled upon a girl being mistaken for a thief and nearly beaten. Xiao Jinse had stepped in to save her, and they’d struck up a conversation afterward.
The girl had come to Hening City to restore an ancient elixir’s prescription.
“She said she wanted to refine Medical Pills to extend the life of her close relatives.”
Through further discussion, Xiao Jinse discovered that the girl had extensive theoretical knowledge of alchemy but was too poor to afford the materials for experimentation.
“And then you two decided to work together?” Bai Lian asked.
Xiao Jinse nodded enthusiastically. “Yes! She’s only interested in the ancient prescription, while I need the Green Grain Cauldron. We hit it off immediately.”
“…”
Bai Lian wasn’t sure whether the second Martial Sister was extraordinarily lucky or if she’d been duped.
Better safe than sorry. Bai Lian decided to secretly investigate the girl’s background.
If the girl turned out to be a fraud… Bai Lian wouldn’t hesitate to employ “special means.”
For now, though, Bai Lian smiled and patted Xiao Jinse’s head. “Do your best. Make sure you won’t have any regrets.”
Xiao Jinse clenched her fists. “Of course!”
With Elder Martial Sister Bai Lian’s silent support, how could I falter?
Her eyes glimmered with determination.
Bai Lian observed this and felt a sense of pride. Unlike the timid and hesitant Xiao Jinse she had first met, this version had hope and ambition burning brightly within her.
That’s exactly what I want, Bai Lian thought.
She wasn’t just an Elder Martial Sister—she was their guardian, their protector. No matter what challenges lay ahead, she would ensure her younger Martial Sisters stayed on the right path.
Whether it was their past or future, happiness or pain, opportunities or hardships… she would guard it all.
Younger Martial Sisters, march forward. Your Elder Martial Sister will always have your back.
The long night had just fallen, and there was still a long journey before dawn.
