Chapter 3: Repeat the Old Trick
“Come here.”
An Lan, sitting on the stone bed, seemed unusually reserved.
If not for her frail and slender frame, there might have been a trace of majesty befitting an empress.
Bai Lian approached her master, feeling slightly uneasy.
An Lan didn’t give her time to overthink. She raised her hand, the loose white sleeve sliding back to reveal a wrist as smooth and flawless as jade. Slowly, she extended her index finger and pressed it gently against Bai Lian’s forehead.
The touch was cool.
Tick—
A small storm erupted in Bai Lian’s sea of divine sense.
In an instant, the cultivation method for “Thousands of Flowers” was engraved onto her soul.
But that wasn’t all. An Lan also injected a stream of pure spiritual Qi into Bai Lian’s body—a spiritual Qi filled with boundless vitality.
It felt alive.
Once inside, it danced in Bai Lian’s Dantian, drawing more Qi to circulate through her meridians.
Bai Lian immediately understood:
An Lan was personally guiding her in mastering the casting technique for “Thousands of Flowers”!
But the process was… rough.
The spiritual Qi, coming from a peak Transcendency Stage cultivator, was almost too dense for Bai Lian’s meridians to handle.
She felt a sharp tingling sensation at first, but it passed quickly.
Soon after, a soothing warmth enveloped her, as if she were soaking in a hot spring.
Suddenly, pink flowers began blooming across the room.
It started with the stone bed, then spread to the walls—one, two… ten million!
The fragrance was intoxicating.
An Lan sat amidst the sea of flowers, her presence like that of a goddess descending.
With a graceful wave of her hand, the blossoms floated into the air, clustering together before collapsing into fiery sparks that rained softly onto Bai Lian’s head.
This was the power of life.
Bai Lian watched in awe. She tested the spell by cutting the back of her hand—and the wound healed instantly.
A mass HP recovery spell!
Bai Lian was ecstatic.
“Perfect! Once my Martial Sisters grow stronger, I can let them fight on the front lines while I support them from the back!”
Yet, “Thousands of Flowers” was more than just a healing spell.
At higher mastery, it could sever an opponent’s vitality with a single thought—or resurrect someone from nothingness. It was a power of duality: the flower of life and the flower of death.
However, Bai Lian wasn’t entirely satisfied.
“The special effects are too flashy!” she thought.
An Lan spoke coldly.
“You can practice the spell on your own later. If you have questions, refer to the imprint I left on your spirit.”
Her tone clearly signaled dismissal.
But Bai Lian had other matters to address.
“Master,” Bai Lian said hesitantly, “The Second Younger Martial Sister has hit a bottleneck in her cultivation. I haven’t been able to find a way to help her break through.”
An Lan didn’t respond immediately.
For a long moment, the cave was silent, as if time itself had frozen.
Finally, An Lan sighed.
“Your Second Younger Martial Sister’s strength has grown too quickly. She needs time to stabilize. To restore balance, she must enhance her Spiritual Root further. But her Fire-type Spiritual Root is already at the pinnacle. Advancing it further won’t be easy.”
“Do you have any advice, Master?”
An Lan thought for a moment. “Take a different approach. Isn’t she fond of alchemy? I’ve heard that many alchemy masters have recently gathered in Hening City. Take her there and let her gain experience.”
Bai Lian nodded.
That was a good idea. The trip could help the Second Younger Martial Sister improve her skills and might even lead to the discovery of a high-quality pill furnace.
Moreover, Bai Lian had another motive: she needed to trigger more tasks to gain skill points.
The sect was no longer as productive for her in this regard. Most disciples were too intimidated by her status to interact normally. She needed to visit areas where fewer people knew her—places filled with “simple and honest” folk.
After thanking An Lan, Bai Lian turned to leave but paused at the mouth of the cave.
Something felt off.
The atmosphere had been unusually tense during their conversation. Had something happened?
Bai Lian’s mind raced as she replayed their interaction.
Then it hit her: the task system.
After she had chosen the task to praise An Lan and belittle the demon, An Lan’s demeanor had shifted dramatically.
“Could it be…?”
Bai Lian’s eyes widened.
The ancient demon—was An Lan herself!
“Master,” Bai Lian said, turning back, “I was wrong.”
An Lan blinked in confusion. “Wrong about what?”
“I shouldn’t have scolded you,” Bai Lian said earnestly.
“…You scolded me?” An Lan asked, startled.
But before she could react further, Bai Lian continued, “Master, that ancient demon—it’s you, isn’t it?”
An Lan’s body tensed.
“What nonsense are you spouting?”
Bai Lian pressed on. “You must have had your reasons for going to the Wushan Holy Palace. No matter what, I believe in you, Master.”
An Lan tried to dismiss her. “You think too highly of me. I don’t have that kind of strength.”
“In my heart, Master is invincible,” Bai Lian said with conviction. “You must be hiding your power due to difficulties I don’t yet understand. But one day, you’ll trust me enough to tell me everything.”
She bowed deeply. “Master, you saved my life by bringing me to the Duxian sect. I owe you everything. Even if I’m weak now, I’ll grow stronger—for you.”
For a long moment, An Lan stared at her disciple, speechless.
Her heart felt warm yet heavy.
She realized now that her earlier plan—to alienate Bai Lian—was impossible.
From the moment she had brought Bai Lian to the sect, their fates had been intertwined.
“Entangled forever…”
