Chapter 25: Adhere to the Master’s Will (2)
The towering city walls and majestic palaces of Tianyi City came into view.
It was said that the founding emperor of Heluo Country sought to discover a new path to cultivation as an emperor but ultimately failed.
Indeed, such a goal was incredibly difficult to achieve.
The world was filled with temples, but Bai Lian had never heard of anyone who had ascended to godhood solely through the worship of mortals.
Relying on others is never as dependable as relying on oneself.
Bai Lian moved slowly along the brightly lit Chang’an Avenue.
Both sides of the road were decorated with ornaments, and the trees sparkled under the soft glow of lanterns.
While strolling through the bustling market, Bai Lian received a message from her Martial Sisters.
It was their routine “night chat.”
The Second Younger Martial Sister: [Elder Martial Sister, have you arrived at Tianyi City?]
The Third Younger Martial Sister: [Elder Martial Sister, did anything interesting happen on the way?]
Bai Lian responded to each question patiently, sending pictures of the area, including several “self-portraits” she had taken.
Elder Martial Sister Bai Lian: [I’m looking for gifts for you.]
She would also prepare gifts for Master An Lan and Master Yan Yue. Even if they refused to accept them, she would still bring the gifts regardless.
As she walked, Bai Lian thought of her recent encounters.
Elder Martial Sister Bai Lian: [Do you remember Yu Ying?]
Two large question marks appeared on the jade communication slips.
Elder Martial Sister Bai Lian: [That girl is also a poor child…]
Bai Lian briefly described Yu Ying’s family disputes and how she had helped her. There was no need to hide anything.
Elder Martial Sister Bai Lian: [Now, she can temporarily escape her troubles.]
The Second Younger Martial Sister nodded silently. Yu Ying’s struggles resonated deeply with her; they were even worse than her own.
The Third Younger Martial Sister, while not feeling as much sympathy, praised Bai Lian enthusiastically.
Elder Martial Sister Bai Lian is amazing! She even defeated the eldest princess with ease!
For them, Bai Lian’s kind deeds were unsurprising. She always helped others; it was simply part of who she was.
After reassuring them that she would return to the Duxian Sect in two days and urging them to remain diligent in their cultivation, Bai Lian ended the conversation.
It took her half an hour to gather gifts. Afterward, she headed to the official accommodations provided by the Heluo government.
Why spend money elsewhere when a quieter and more suitable room has already been arranged?
—
The Next Day
News of Bai Lian’s arrival in Tianyi City spread quickly.
Several visitors came to see her throughout the morning, leaving her completely drained by noon.
I’m exhausted. If something like this happens again, I’ll send someone else in my place.
She was sitting under a tree, about to enjoy some snacks, when there was a knock at the door.
“!”
Bai Lian stood up in frustration.
Will it never end?
Extending her Divine Sense, she discovered that the eldest princess was standing outside.
—
The eldest princess, whose royal surname was Xu, walked in slowly.
“Have you handled everything with Yu Ying?” Bai Lian asked directly.
The eldest princess frowned. “Shouldn’t you inquire about my well-being first?”
“Ha.”
Bai Lian’s expression remained flat. “There are already plenty of people concerned about your well-being. What difference would my inquiry make?”
“You’re so dull,” the eldest princess remarked, sitting across from her. “But I don’t dislike it.”
Bai Lian remained calm, her heart as steady as a Buddha’s.
Do you think your words can shake me, Demon Woman? Impossible.
Bai Lian wouldn’t be fooled. The eldest princess, being a royal of Heluo Country and a disciple of Xingluo Fortress, wouldn’t develop feelings for her simply because of one encounter.
Something about this situation seemed off.
“Where is the veil I gave you?” the eldest princess asked.
“I destroyed it,” Bai Lian replied bluntly.
“…Destroyed?” The eldest princess was visibly shocked.
“Yes.”
Bai Lian poured her a cup of tea. If her Martial Sisters saw her with that veil, explaining it would take too much effort. It was better to discard it entirely.
The eldest princess held the teacup in both hands. The tea tasted unusually bland.
Recovering her composure, she said, “Don’t worry. I’ve spoken with Marquis Wu’an. You can take Yu Ying with you freely.”
“That’s good.”
“Thank you,” Bai Lian said sincerely, catching the eldest princess off guard.
—
The eldest princess studied Bai Lian carefully.
When Bai Lian fought, she seemed to command the stars.
When she sat quietly, she appeared as gentle as a serene maiden.
The contrast was seamless, without the slightest inconsistency.
The eldest princess realized how different they were. She needed to better understand Bai Lian.
“How do you feel about the Duxian Sect?” the eldest princess suddenly asked.
“It’s good,” Bai Lian replied softly.
“You’ve been there for less than four years,” the eldest princess continued. “Your master rarely teaches you. Frankly, I think Xingluo Fortress is a better fit. If you join us, you’ll receive our full support—”
“Please behave yourself!” Bai Lian interrupted with a sharp tone.
Her expression turned serious, her eyes like blades.
If this had been said a year ago, Bai Lian might have left with the eldest princess without a second thought. But now, everything had changed.
In the past year, she had found a sense of belonging.
She loved the plants on Qiongming Peak.
She adored her Martial Sisters.
She cherished the thriving Duxian Sect.
And her relationship with Master An Lan had grown harmonious, dispelling her earlier fears.
This wasn’t an oath; it was her heart’s truth.
As long as Master An Lan doesn’t abandon me, I’ll remain by her side for a lifetime.
The eldest princess suddenly felt as though a vast sea separated her from Bai Lian.
This was the first time she had seen Bai Lian express such strong emotions.
“I…”
“You don’t need to explain,” Bai Lian said coldly. “I just dislike it when people presume about my relationship with my master.”
“Yes,” the eldest princess replied weakly.
Realizing her mistake, she quickly changed the subject. “Yu Ying isn’t actually the daughter of Marquis Wu’an.”
“What?”
“It’s true. I’ll explain everything after tomorrow’s ceremony.”
The eldest princess stood and left. Bai Lian didn’t stop her.
Still upset, Bai Lian looked up at the tree overhead.
Suddenly, she longed to return to Qiongming Peak.
