Chapter 21: I Care About Her Life! (1)
Bai Lian decided to go with Yu Ying. Anyway, she had nothing else to do, and Yu Ying lived not far from Tianyi City—just on the way.
Yu Ying hesitated but finally agreed.
Was this a pleasant surprise? She felt comfortable around Bai Lian.
She decided to take this journey as a form of solace before leaving and to use the sweet taste of companionship to enrich her empty heart.
When the dawn light cut through the long night, Bai Lian lit almost all the firewood in the front hall.
She stood up.
“Let’s go.”
Yu Ying followed closely behind.
When she stepped out of the front hall, Yu Ying looked back and saw the entire manor beginning to sink as if it were collapsing into mud.
Miraculously, despite the large fire, there was no smoke.
“It’s An Yue!” Yu Ying immediately realized.
She hurriedly asked, “What about the ones left in the house…?”
“I killed them all,” Bai Lian replied, her face as calm as autumn water—no joy, no sorrow.
Her words sounded less like cold declarations and more like mundane phrases such as “eating” or “drinking.”
Yu Ying felt the wind rise.
The breeze brushed past Bai Lian, carrying a wisp of green silk that landed on her forehead. Distracted for a moment, Yu Ying refocused and noticed a woman hidden in a corner falling to the ground with a dull thud. The woman died quickly—her eyes grew blank, and her figure stilled.
Bai Lian spoke, “That was a bandit’s den. No one there was innocent. If you don’t kill them, innocent people may suffer because of them.”
Yu Ying’s lips turned white. She nodded in understanding but struggled to adapt to the process.
The white becomes black, and the black becomes dead.
The change was too abrupt.
As they walked, Bai Lian said, “Don’t be deceived by villains. Most people have no scruples when it comes to evil. If their schemes backfire and their lives are threatened, they’ll easily betray their own 80-year-old mother or three-year-old child.”
Yu Ying lowered her head slightly, a blush creeping onto her cheeks.
“I’m not stupid enough to be deceived by such lies.”
Bai Lian paused.
I was just giving an example. I didn’t mean you were stupid. Why are you blushing?
Clearing her throat, she continued, “What I mean is, if a villain tries to deceive you, you can respond by saying—”
“Don’t worry about your wife! I’ll raise her after you die!”
Yu Ying nodded. “I see.”
Bai Lian shook her head secretly.
If only you truly understood.
There’s no difference between killing evil ghosts and evil people. All beings are equal—don’t discriminate against ghosts!
They reached the door. At that moment, Uncle Hu, who had once guided Yu Ying, fell lifelessly at her feet.
A man with a kind face can still harbor a heart as black as ink.
Yu Ying sighed. “Even the Hu family master’s younger brother, who was nearly disabled by an evil ghost, is a villain?”
Bai Lian paused.
“?!”
A question mark slowly formed on her face.
She asked, “Miss Yu Ying, you don’t actually believe Mrs. Hu was torturing the Hu family master… do you?”
“What do you mean?” Yu Ying asked, puzzled.
An Yue is truly worthy of being An Yue. She knows so much!
Bai Lian realized Yu Ying was serious.
…Oh.
“You’re the one with a heart as clear as glass,” Bai Lian sighed.
She understood now—Yu Ying had grown up in an isolated environment. With no one to teach her certain knowledge and no personal curiosity about it, Yu Ying simply didn’t know.
I misjudged her. I thought she was making a crude joke, but I misunderstood!
“Huh?” Yu Ying was stunned by Bai Lian’s comment.
“It wasn’t torture—or rather, it was torture,” Bai Lian explained, shaking her head.
Mrs. Hu, who had become a fierce ghost, was full of cold spiritual Qi. The Hu family master wouldn’t have dared to “fight” with Mrs. Hu daily if not for the energy she absorbed from other men to cultivate.
“Let’s put it this way—the Hu family master has no… younger brother.” She sighed. “Well, if you don’t understand, it’s fine. If you meet someone you like in the future, let them explain it to you.”
Though Yu Ying was curious, Bai Lian’s refusal to elaborate left her with no choice but to give up.
Instead, she asked another question. “Why does Miss An say my heart is like clear glass?”
“Intuition!” Bai Lian lied, her face solemn. “It’s my intuition as an Elder Martial Sister. Believe it or not!”
Yu Ying pursed her lips. “I just sensed a salty taste from Miss An.”
Bai Lian’s face turned stony. “Miss Yu Ying, have you ever considered taking off the cloth? Relying solely on your Heart’s Eyes to observe people is too one-sided.”
To her surprise, Yu Ying responded decisively. “Okay!”
She untied the black cloth behind her head, her white arms bending gracefully in the soft morning light, reflecting an understated charm.
For a moment, Bai Lian’s attention shifted entirely away from Yu Ying’s uncovered eyes.
She had a thought similar to Ju Buyi’s—Yu Ying’s temperament didn’t match her body at all.
But Bai Lian could tell Yu Ying hadn’t changed her appearance, nor did she possess any magic tools to alter it.
“Miss Yu, lead the way.”
“Hmm.”
Stepping into the morning light, they set out for Yu Ying’s residence.
—
On the road, they moved slowly, unhurried.
This time, under Bai Lian’s guidance, Yu Ying leisurely observed the local customs of Heluo Country.
They tasted tea in a teahouse. Bai Lian rolled up her sleeves and smiled. “They can’t make tea, but I can!”
They admired flowers at a show. With a simple touch from Bai Lian, a drooping flower perked up, its petals vibrant with life.
They fished by the river but caught no fish—only an old iron basin discarded by someone. Eventually, Bai Lian used Spirit Qi to catch several fish herself.
They helped unload goods at the canal wharf and even caught thieves on rainy nights.
Finally, they delivered messages on the ancient road for scholars who couldn’t visit their families.
When one scholar boarded a carriage, Bai Lian softly sang, “Outside the long pavilion, beside the ancient road, the grass is green…”
After the scholar left in tears, Bai Lian turned to Yu Ying.
“For us, a thousand miles is just a short distance. But for ordinary people, a thousand miles is a lifetime—they may never see their loved ones again.”
Yu Ying remained silent.
A hundred miles ahead lay her village. It was time to say goodbye to Bai Lian.
The days they spent together made Yu Ying feel like she’d returned to her childhood. Back then, her mother’s presence filled her small world with beauty.
But those days were gone.
“Mom…” Yu Ying subconsciously called out.
“Huh?” Bai Lian was startled.
Regaining her senses, Yu Ying blushed. She hurriedly explained, “I just remembered accompanying my mother to see off her friend when I was little.”
Oh, I see. You almost scared me to death!
