Chapter 19: A Heart Like Clear Glass
There is a ghost in this house!
A real ghost, not a fake one.
After being led to the guest room by Uncle Hu, Bai Lian became more convinced of her suspicions. The faint black fog in the air, gathered by an inconspicuous magic array, was impossible to miss for someone of her caliber.
“Is there a ghost?”
When Bai Lian asked, Yu Ying was momentarily stunned.
Bai Lian pressed on, “What’s the problem?”
Yu Ying hesitated before speaking. “Actually…”
She then shared the story.
—
Yu Ying’s acquaintance with the Hu family began during an exorcism ceremony two months ago. She had stumbled upon their haunted house while searching for a master for the broken sword she carried.
The story of the Hu family being haunted was widely known. The Hu family’s master, despite being a strong martial artist, was still an ordinary man who had been tormented to the brink of death by a vengeful ghost.
“When I first met the Hu family’s master, his face was dull and lifeless, his eyes sunken, his legs trembling, and his body as thin as a reed,” Yu Ying said, her voice filled with unease.
Even now, the memory gave her chills.
At the time, she thought she was looking at a skeleton. The female ghost haunting the family was merciless.
This ghost had once been a notorious bandit, drowned during a pursuit by the Hu family’s master. Death hadn’t softened her; it had turned her into a fierce spirit bent on revenge.
She began by targeting the relatives of the Hu family’s master, tormenting them with unspeakable cruelty. Then, she set her sights on him.
“She would hold him down just after sunset,” Yu Ying said with a shudder, “riding him like she was taming a wild horse.”
Bai Lian raised an eyebrow. “Are you sure this isn’t a blue story?”
Yu Ying missed the implication, continuing in all seriousness. “She almost squeezed the life out of him! And the master’s younger brother was nearly maimed!”
“…Where did you hear this?” Bai Lian asked.
Yu Ying replied earnestly, “From a fellow exorcist. This ghost was so powerful that seven of us came to face her, but only three survived. The others, including the kind-hearted leader, were killed.”
Bai Lian rubbed her temples. Yu Ying was strong, but the ghost’s energy was even purer than expected, likely closer to the peak of the Foundation Establishment Stage.
“I must warn the Hu family’s master,” Yu Ying said urgently, gathering her things.
Bai Lian nodded. “Go ahead. I’ll wait here.”
Yu Ying hurried to the front hall, while Bai Lian leaned against a tree outside, watching the red sun sink below the horizon.
—
She extended her Divine Sense, bypassing the array that gathered ghostly energy. At the center of the array lay hundreds of low-level talismans, their aura cold and ominous.
Seal? Bai Lian shook her head. No, this wasn’t a sealing array. It was meant to gather ghostly energy.
Her thoughts were interrupted by a sudden presence.
A young woman in white stood a few feet away, her body seeming to float in the evening breeze.
This wasn’t a human.
“Looking for me?” Bai Lian asked calmly.
The woman smiled. “I am the wife of the Hu family’s master.”
Bai Lian’s gaze sharpened. “What’s your connection to the ghost Yu Ying fought?”
The woman’s smile didn’t waver. “This isn’t the time to discuss that.” She stepped closer. “You’re quite strong for a woman, but that doesn’t matter. You’ll serve my needs just as well as any man.”
Bai Lian’s expression turned cold. “Actually, I prefer heart-to-heart connections over physical ones.”
She moved her hand deliberately, slowly. The ghost realized too late—Bai Lian’s hand had reached her chest, grasping a white talisman hidden within.
The ghost froze, trembling.
Bai Lian’s voice was icy. “Do you want to answer my questions, or shall I use a Soul Searching spell?”
The bluff worked. Terrified, the ghost confessed everything.
—
Meanwhile, in the front hall, Yu Ying explained her concerns to the Hu family’s master, who listened with an unnerving calm.
Finally, he clapped his hands. “Miss Yu, let my wife explain the situation.”
Yu Ying turned toward the side hall expectantly, but no one appeared.
After a tense silence, a deep voice echoed from the shadows.
“All of this is my husband’s doing,” the voice said. “He asked me to secretly drain the energy of guests and used me to practice ghost cultivation methods.”
Yu Ying’s face paled as the truth unraveled. The Hu family’s master had orchestrated everything—luring cultivators like her with fake ghost stories, only to use them as fuel for his twisted practices.
“Kill her,” the master ordered coldly.
But before his ghostly wife could obey, a sharp scream rang out.
Yu Ying watched in stunned silence as the ghost collapsed, her power completely drained. Behind her stood Bai Lian.
“Miss An Yue!” Yu Ying cried in relief.
The Hu family’s master tried to react, but Bai Lian didn’t give him the chance. With a flick of her hand, his body disintegrated, leaving nothing behind—not even ashes.
