Chapter 11: Should People With High Morality Be Bullied?
When Bai Lian returned to the inn, Xiao Jinse and Su Youwei were nervously guarding the door.
They had been debating whether to go out and search for her, but the noise outside made them hesitate. They feared that before they could find Elder Martial Sister Bai Lian, they might lose their way in the chaos.
Although they knew Bai Lian was strong, their worry overshadowed their logic.
Finally, just past 9 o’clock, Bai Lian pushed open the door and walked in.
The two younger Martial Sisters rushed toward her like chicks reuniting with their mother.
—
Inspect!
Her appearance seemed normal, but what if there were hidden injuries beneath her clothes?
This possibility couldn’t be ignored.
Check everything!
“What’s the matter?” Bai Lian asked, holding the snacks high above her head as the two began their inspection.
“The arm is fine.”
“No problem with her stomach.”
“Her feet seem normal too.”
“Butt… let’s not check that.”
The two Martial Sisters maintained a serious demeanor, carefully dividing the work.
Bai Lian felt like a doll, helpless under their scrutiny.
Wait. Hold on!
Someone just touched her chest!
Her eyes sharpened as she looked at the two.
Both Martial Sisters patted their chests with relief.
“We’re glad you’re okay, Elder Martial Sister!” they said in unison.
“……”
Was it an accident?
Bai Lian’s gaze wandered between them, but their expressions betrayed nothing unusual.
—
Setting the snacks on the table, she picked up the jade rabbit from the bed.
“One for each. Try it.”
The jade rabbit, uninterested in meat, preferred vegetables like leeks, coriander, and peanuts, all of which Bai Lian had thoughtfully bought.
The rabbit looked up at Bai Lian with shining eyes.
If only these two annoying women weren’t around, she could be Bai Lian’s only companion.
Bad luck!
She bit into two peanuts and immediately regretted it. Bitter.
If only there were wine.
Ton ton ton—
“Get drunk while there’s wine!”
—
As Bai Lian dealt with the tofu wrapped in oil paper, she gave a general recount of the night’s events. She mentioned that someone caused trouble, which escalated because Taoist Lingye was involved.
“And how did your day go?” she asked, successfully steering the conversation away from herself.
Xiao Jinse perked up immediately.
“That girl Shan Huan is quite knowledgeable! She said she remembered some special medicinal materials and wanted to check her family’s ancient texts to verify her guess.”
Bai Lian nodded. “It seems you’re making progress.”
Xiao Jinse beamed. “Yes! If all goes well, we might be able to refine the pills the day after tomorrow.”
Her joy was contagious. A beautiful day indeed begins with a young Martial Sister’s smiling face!
—
The noise outside didn’t subside until 4 a.m.
Bai Lian lay awake, wondering how many people stayed up all night.
But the next morning brought more commotion.
—
The City Erupts
News of the previous night’s chaos had spread.
A group of alchemists loyal to Taoist Lingye gathered near the Chuncao Pavilion, demanding answers.
“Master Lingye, we heard someone tried to kill you to stop you from restoring the ancient elixir’s prescription!”
“That’s right!”
“Unacceptable!”
Taoist Lingye came out to calm the crowd, his expression puzzled.
“What are you talking about?”
“Someone attacked you, Master Lingye!” they cried.
Taoist Lingye laughed.
“This is a misunderstanding,” he said, bowing slightly. “No one attacked me. Last night, while practicing boxing in the attic, I was suddenly inspired and created a new move. I couldn’t control my strength and accidentally destroyed the attic. I didn’t expect it to cause such a stir. My apologies!”
“…?”
Bai Lian blinked, stunned.
Can he just… explain it like that?
The crowd had a similar reaction at first but quickly erupted into cheers.
“Master Lingye is incredible!”
“Your boxing technique is unmatched!”
“Truly worthy of admiration!”
Stroking his white beard, Taoist Lingye smiled modestly.
—
Bai Lian’s eyelid twitched.
Damn it. Another opportunity to show off!
Still, she wasn’t angry. It seemed Taoist Lingye had taken her advice to heart.
All she wanted was fairness, but she understood that fairness in the cultivation world was often an illusion—something that could be shaped and dressed however one liked.
Still, she was relieved. She was gradually building a foundation strong enough to pave the way for her younger Martial Sisters.
But the real enemy, the “Evil” standing before her master, An Lan, was far worse. Tricks alone wouldn’t suffice to defeat it.
The only solution was power.
With that in mind, Bai Lian led her Martial Sisters back to the inn.
—
A Sudden Twist
That evening, Xiao Jinse returned looking exhausted, her brow furrowed.
“Failed again?” Su Youwei asked.
Xiao Jinse shook her head. “No, that’s not it.”
“What’s wrong?” Bai Lian inquired.
“Miss Shan Huan didn’t return today. I’m worried something happened to her.”
Bai Lian tried to reassure her. “We’ll go look for her tomorrow.”
“Thank you, Elder Martial Sister,” Xiao Jinse said, her smile returning.
—
The next morning, led by Bai Lian, they arrived at Shan Huan’s rented courtyard.
Hours passed, but there was no sign of her. Even Bai Lian started to grow uneasy.
Was there really an accident?
Xiao Jinse’s anxiety deepened. Without Shan Huan’s guidance, she couldn’t face the renowned alchemists alone.
—
As Xiao Jinse sank into doubt, she felt a cold hand take hers.
Looking up, she saw Bai Lian smiling.
“Let’s go find her,” Bai Lian said.
Her smile was warm, almost melting, yet her touch was icy cold.
Did Bai Lian leave no warmth for herself?
—
Bai Lian took them to Gu Quan, paying him Spirit Stones to gather information.
Under his guidance, they found Shan Huan’s home.
There was no blood, no sign of violence—just a broken thatched hut, half-destroyed as if by a storm.
Inside, Xiao Jinse found a letter addressed to her.
—
Shan Huan’s Letter
The letter explained her absence. Shan Huan felt guilty for abandoning their collaboration, but she had no choice.
[My father is in their hands. They promised to cure his illness if I stopped working with you.]
—
Xiao Jinse stared at the letter, speechless.
Bai Lian said nothing, her gaze fixed on her younger Martial Sister.
Do people with high morals deserve to be bullied?
Taoist Lingye’s face flashed through her mind.
If things were as she suspected, she would eliminate anyone involved in this.
This time, it wasn’t about fairness.
It was for her Martial Sister.
—
Drawing the Dirt Free Sword, Bai Lian’s face hardened.
“Let’s go back to Hening City.”
