Chapter 5: “Group Photo” of You and Me
Waking up from the dream, Bai Lian sat up on the bed, stretching as sunlight streamed through the window. The warmth filled the room, creating an atmosphere of happiness.
She reached out, touching the quilt—wet?
“…”
Bai Lian scanned her surroundings. The doors and windows were shut, the air still, and a light sheen of sweat lingered from the night before. It was a normal thing, she thought. After all, she had been in the middle of a deep sleep.
She turned to the side and opened the wooden window next to her bed, allowing a cool breeze to sweep into the room.
“Speaking of which, I had a long-lost dream last night.” Bai Lian rubbed her forehead thoughtfully.
As a cultivator, she rarely dreamed, but last night, her dreams had been vivid. She had “exercised” throughout the night—her master was watching.
First, she had danced the sword for hours, then played with the lance for what felt like ages. Finally, she swam in circles in the pool for over a dozen rounds. By the time she climbed out, she felt as if she could swim for hours. It had been such a confusing dream.
The one thing that lingered with her was the smile she had seen. She had even thought that her secret conversation with her master in the cave was a part of the dream. But then, she looked at the picture hanging on the wall…
Bai Lian sighed. “It’s no wonder the master is so popular in the game.”
Her looks were enough to attract many players, and the mystery of her identity only made it more enticing. Not to mention, the master had a habit of pretending to be “cool,” even when she was knocked down by “Bai Lian” in the game.
“Bai Lian? You’re just rubbish.”
“If you dare take one more step, I’ll show you something earth-shattering!”
“You can try it!”
“Hmph! Did you think I didn’t eat breakfast?”
It was no surprise the master had become the most popular female character in the fan-drawn doujin mangas.
However, when Bai Lian gazed at the picture on the wall, there was no particular emotion about the master. She simply made her bed and headed toward the door.
There, Xiao Jinse was waiting.
“Second Younger Martial Sister, what’s up?” Bai Lian asked, opening the door with a warm smile.
Xiao Jinse looked concerned. “Martial Sister, I thought something had happened. You were still asleep, and I got worried.”
Bai Lian paused, realizing it was already close to noon. Her sleep had been unexpectedly long.
She smiled and gently patted her second Martial Sister’s head. “What could happen to me? With the master, the Qiongming Peak is safe from any harm.”
An Lan, although awkward, was not heartless. Bai Lian recalled how, in the game, despite being betrayed by an enemy, An Lan had still been willing to surrender the unsealed lance in exchange for sparing the Duxian sect.
Bai Lian knew An Lan well—better than anyone else. She understood that while An Lan’s reactions could be slow, her heart was not malicious.
In this world, no one knew An Lan better than Bai Lian. And because of that understanding, Bai Lian was always patient with her, as long as it didn’t involve younger Martial Sisters.
The Qiongming Peak was growing, and Bai Lian was determined to protect everyone—whether it was her Martial Sisters or the master. Everyone deserved a happy ending.
Xiao Jinse smiled, visibly reassured by Bai Lian’s calm confidence. She trusted Bai Lian completely.
When Xiao Jinse noticed something unusual in the room, she stepped closer to the wall.
“There’s something different,” she observed, pointing to the painting. “Is that… Master?”
Bai Lian nodded. “Yes, it’s our master from a long time ago.”
Xiao Jinse examined the painting more closely and found a small red seal in the corner. She read the inscription aloud, “Yan Yue, the fifth day of September. Wait, is this by Master Yan Yue?”
Bai Lian’s mind flashed to the image of the fiery woman.
“Master Yan Yue?” she echoed, stepping up beside Xiao Jinse.
The seal indeed belonged to Yan Yue, something Bai Lian hadn’t expected.
She remembered how, when they were younger, Yan Yue had always stuck by An Lan, even though An Lan had little interest in her. An Lan had often scolded Yan Yue, even ignoring her at times.
Bai Lian had never expected An Lan to keep such a painting from Yan Yue. Maybe she had simply forgotten about it.
Xiao Jinse sighed. “Master Yan Yue is really quite versatile.”
She crossed her arms and stared at the wall with a serious expression.
Bai Lian raised an eyebrow. “What’s wrong?”
Xiao Jinse frowned, her gaze lingering on the wall. “Something feels missing.”
Bai Lian was puzzled. “Missing?”
Xiao Jinse pointed at the wall, “There’s the master, me, and the third Martial Sister, but you’re not there, Martial Sister.”
Bai Lian looked at the empty space on the wall and realized Xiao Jinse was right. The wall felt incomplete.
“You know, when I first saw myself with the third Martial Sister in the picture, I wanted to tear it in half. How could I smile in the same frame as Su Youwei?” Xiao Jinse admitted, her tone light but determined.
“But adding the master… now it feels complete,” she added, smiling. “Martial Sister, have you ever made a painting of yourself?”
Bai Lian nodded. “I have.”
“Bring it out, quickly. I’ll hang it here!” Xiao Jinse exclaimed, her excitement palpable.
With a smile, Bai Lian handed her the painting, and Xiao Jinse carefully adjusted it on the wall. Now, Bai Lian’s painting was placed between herself and the master, creating a perfect balance. From a distance, the third Martial Sister was pushed to the far right, as if exiled.
“Perfect!” Xiao Jinse grinned, feeling victorious.
Bai Lian stared at the picture, then suddenly pulled out a pen. She quickly sketched a jade rabbit at her feet, playfully tugging at its ears.
“Now it’s complete,” she said softly.
Xiao Jinse didn’t comment. The rabbit was just a rabbit, after all—nothing to be concerned about.
Bai Lian put the pen away, her mind turning to other matters. It was time to head out. She and her second Martial Sister stepped out of the room, but they stopped just outside.
At the gate of the medicine garden, Qing Luan was locked in a silent stare-off with the jade rabbit.
One person. One rabbit. Neither willing to back down.
“…”
