Chapter 4: An Lan Is On the Top! (2)
Green lanterns, stone statues.
At that time, Bai Lian had stood beside her, just as she was now, asking about the main points of cultivation. The difference was that back then, Bai Lian had looked so young and immature. Whenever she looked up and saw An Lan, she’d shyly look away.
Now, Bai Lian had grown older, calmer, but no longer as cute as before.
sigh.
Why were these memories so vague?
If it weren’t for the scene in front of her, she wouldn’t have remembered them at all.
Another sigh. An Lan realized her good mood had vanished along with the fading memories. She hated how strange it felt, this sense of something missing.
She was the Immortal Heavenly Lord! She could have anything she wanted!
It should be…
An Lan clenched her fist beneath her long sleeve.
These basic magic circles were too simple for her. Today, she was going to be a good teacher and let Bai Lian truly admire her!
“Look at this,” An Lan said, extending a finger, “It’s very simple… You can get it right away… You can spot this at a glance…”
She gestured with her other hand, and magic circles began to materialize one by one in the cave.
As the bright yellow candle flames flickered, the dark cave was illuminated by bursts of colored lights.
Bai Lian felt as though she was standing in the middle of a bright galaxy. Countless stars flickered in the deep, dark night…
This master…
Fucking amazing!
She could never have acted so effortlessly.
But as An Lan explained, Bai Lian grew confused.
How easy is this?
How did she do this?
What is this?
Damn it!
Is this the world of geniuses?
“Do you understand?” An Lan asked with a smile.
“Got it, got it!” Bai Lian nodded, grinning. She gave up on trying to understand everything and said, “Master, you’re amazing!”
“Do you really understand?” An Lan asked again, a vague feeling of something being wrong creeping over her.
“I really understand!” Bai Lian reassured her.
An Lan was satisfied for now. Bai Lian really did have potential! She continued, “Are there any other questions?”
There was no pop-up notification from the system, so Bai Lian shook her head.
An Lan went silent for a moment, feeling a bit disoriented.
She suddenly realized that Bai Lian was too clever—perhaps too clever—and that might not be such a good thing.
She imagined herself and Bai Lian staying up all night, discussing the obstacles Bai Lian faced in her cultivation, as they used to do.
Just like the good old days.
But now… it felt like she had written a whole book, but Bai Lian had barely opened the first page.
She knew it wasn’t Bai Lian’s fault. After all, she couldn’t just force Bai Lian to become a fool, could she?
An Lan shook her head quietly, her thoughts drifting as she took a good look at Bai Lian.
It had been more than half a month since they’d seen each other, and there was a noticeable increase in the “Death” symbols around Bai Lian, compared to before.
This, in itself, was unreasonable.
How could someone with so many “Death” symbols still be favored by heaven and possess a Tao halo?
The Tao halo was the embodiment of vitality, after all.
If the balance between life and death were so easily maintained, An Lan would have already achieved real detachment. Why had she not?
An Lan patted the space next to her. “Sit.”
Bai Lian sat down, moving a bit to the side so she wouldn’t press on An Lan’s clothes.
“…”
An Lan was stunned.
The distance between them was just two inches, but those two inches felt like an entire world apart.
The air around them grew thick with an unspoken tension.
An Lan spoke, breaking the silence. “Put your feet out.”
“Eh?” Bai Lian asked, confused.
“I need to check your Tao halo, to see if something’s wrong with it.”
“Oh,” Bai Lian responded, a little embarrassed.
She took off her boots and socks, and slowly placed her bare right foot on An Lan’s thigh.
To be honest, she felt a little self-conscious.
After all, An Lan was her master.
An Lan gracefully grasped Bai Lian’s foot, examining it carefully. Her heart remained steady as she planned to give Bai Lian a thorough check-up.
Earlier, she had realized that she didn’t want to see how Bai Lian would die.
After the initial nervousness, Bai Lian felt herself calm down.
She gazed into her master’s focused eyes, a strange warmth spreading through her chest. Something in her heart shifted.
This scene…
Surprisingly reassuring.
She stopped thinking about An Lan’s status for the moment. For now, she was just an ordinary master—one who made her feel comfortable and at ease.
After a while, An Lan released Bai Lian’s foot, though her brows remained furrowed.
Bai Lian hesitated, then asked cautiously, “Master, is there anything unusual with my Tao halo?”
An Lan shook her head. “It’s normal. In fact, it seems to be growing.”
Normal… was the greatest abnormality. Even An Lan didn’t understand what that meant.
Forget it.
An Lan took out several items from her storage ring, pushing them toward Bai Lian.
“?”
Bai Lian blinked, her eyes widening in surprise.
In front of her were medical pills, magic circle books, the best protective magic tool beads, various functional talismans, and several sets of Magic Formation Flags.
An Lan said, “Take all of these.”
Bai Lian was stunned.
Aside from the Dirt Free Sword, this was the first time she had received so many items from An Lan.
With these, she could easily defeat a cultivator at the peak of the Nascent Soul Stage!
“Master, I…” Bai Lian stammered, nearly dropping to her knees.
My master is too amazing!
An Lan’s expression grew serious. “You’re the Eldest Martial Sister. If you’re poor, others will look down on Qingming Peak.”
“…”
“Alright, go do your own thing,” An Lan waved her hand dismissively, eager to send Bai Lian off.
Bai Lian gathered everything quickly, bowing. “Thank you, master.”
She turned to leave, but just as she was about to step out, An Lan called out to her.
“Wait!”
“?”
An Lan pulled out a scroll from her ring. “I remember you like hanging pictures on the wall. I think this one’s quite nice. Take it back and hang it.”
“Yes.”
Bai Lian didn’t ask any questions.
She returned to her room and began sorting through the things An Lan had given her. After a moment, she unfurled the scroll, revealing a portrait of An Lan, dressed in a long skirt and floating like a fairy.
Bai Lian glanced at the picture already hanging on the wall—a portrait of her Martial Sisters when she was testing her painting skills. There was an empty spot next to it, so Bai Lian carefully hung the new picture in place.
It didn’t look bad at all.
She decided she would worship it every day. Maybe, just maybe, when An Lan was in a good mood, she’d get more gifts.
Back in the cave, An Lan lay back in bed, a satisfied smile on her face. This was how it should be—her Martial Sister’s painting should always hang on the wall!
The blanket no longer felt cold, and the quilt was softer now.
After several breaths, An Lan fell asleep, her dreams filled with thoughts of being a good master.
Zhu Xian
Yes, she’s a good master
