Chapter 3: Why Should We Care?
Su Youwei was different tonight.
She was deep in thought, pondering a very serious issue. So much so that she barely noticed Martial Sister Bai Lian’s slender jade feet swaying in front of her.
Xiao Jinse, entirely absorbed in studying Bai Lian’s Tao halo, failed to notice anything unusual. Although Bai Lian found Su Youwei’s behavior a bit strange, she didn’t press further.
“Take it away!”
These words echoed relentlessly in Su Youwei’s mind.
Days had passed, but the memories of Chen Yizhi and Second Martial Sister being possessed by Demon Souls still haunted her. The visions and rumors she had encountered might not be baseless.
The problem centered on Martial Sister Bai Lian. While Bai Lian seemed normal now, that didn’t guarantee she would remain so in the future.
It wasn’t that Su Youwei doubted Bai Lian’s character. She was certain Bai Lian would never turn into a “black-bellied” schemer. However, considering recent incidents where someone had targeted Bai Lian, Su Youwei couldn’t shake the feeling that an accident might happen someday.
Being possessed.
That was the most plausible explanation.
Ridiculous!
How could anyone possibly possess Elder Martial Sister Bai Lian? She was a Natural Saint, her cultivation base immensely powerful. But despite her disbelief, Su Youwei couldn’t think of a better explanation.
If someone were to possess Bai Lian, it would undoubtedly be to steal her luck and fate, stripping her of her identity as a Natural Saint. Though that fiend might ultimately meet its demise, the damage to Bai Lian’s reputation would already be done.
Unacceptable.
Su Youwei clenched her fists.
Even if it meant staining her hands with blood, she was determined to protect Bai Lian. The prospect of killing didn’t faze her. The Martial Sister Bai Lian she envisioned could suppress her internal demon; this would not be an issue.
—
As Su Youwei mulled over these thoughts, the night’s lesson ended.
“Third Martial Sister.”
Su Youwei was stopped just as she reached the door.
“Elder Martial Sister?”
Bai Lian handed out Qing Luan’s gifts to her and Xiao Jinse. “Focus on your cultivation. I’ll prepare medical pills for you.”
“Elder Martial Sister…”
Su Youwei was moved beyond words. She must protect Bai Lian at all costs!
She walked out of Bai Lian’s room with a determined look, but instead of heading back to her own, she decided to take a walk to calm her excitement.
—
Halfway up Qiongming Peak, she spotted Qing Luan wielding an axe.
Su Youwei knew Qing Luan had come to learn from Bai Lian. Though displeased, she kept her feelings to herself. As Bai Lian’s junior Martial Sister, her behavior would influence how others viewed Bai Lian.
Still, Su Youwei couldn’t help but hope Qing Luan would leave soon.
What was wrong with Qing Luan?
Big chest.
Long legs.
Round buttocks.
Delicate facial features.
Everything about her screamed trouble.
Bah!
“Bad woman, stay away from Elder Martial Sister!”
Fueled by anger, Su Youwei decided to confront Qing Luan.
—
“Oh, Martial Sister Su, it’s you,” Qing Luan said, startled. She had thought it was Master An Lan again.
To distract herself from her anxiety after a misunderstanding with An Lan, Qing Luan had resorted to chopping firewood.
“What are you doing here, Martial Sister Qing Luan? Shouldn’t you be resting?” Su Youwei asked innocently.
“I… I feel upset,” Qing Luan admitted.
“Upset?” Su Youwei’s eyes gleamed. “What happened?”
Qing Luan recounted her earlier conversation with Bai Lian.
Hearing Qing Luan’s explanation, Su Youwei grew suspicious. Qing Luan claimed to have come to surpass her sister, Hong Luan, who was at the Soul Changing Stage.
What an excuse!
This reasoning gave Qing Luan a permanent pretext to stay close to Bai Lian.
With a stern expression, Su Youwei asked, “Why are you so fixated on surpassing your sister? What will you gain? And if she surpasses you later, what will you do then? Have you thought this through?”
Under Su Youwei’s relentless questioning, Qing Luan faltered.
“You’re only making things harder for yourself,” Su Youwei continued earnestly. “What you need isn’t to cling to Martial Sister Bai Lian—it’s to calm down and reflect.”
Qing Luan fell silent, digesting Su Youwei’s words. Finally, she sighed.
“Thank you.”
She turned and left.
—
Back on Yunluo Peak, Qing Luan sat in quiet contemplation. Su Youwei’s words echoed in her mind, bolstering her resolve.
The next morning, she returned to Qiongming Peak, dressed in simple clothes. From now on, she would devote herself to serving Bai Lian and learning from her guidance.
Su Youwei would be proud to see her change.
The Qiongming Peak truly was full of kind and selfless people!
Zhu Xian
Oh no, those two sisters would be even angrier!
