Chapter 25: How Do You Say You Are Responsible?
Led by Qiong Zhi, the jade rabbit temporarily left Bai Lian’s room to make a pilgrimage under the laurel tree.
Bai Lian knew there was unlikely to be a “Saint” waiting for them there. According to the game’s settings, a “partition wall” existed between the Immortal World and the cultivation world. Even a cultivator as strong as An Lan would struggle to cross that boundary, let alone Yaoguang Star Lord.
By the way, there was surely a significant secret regarding the immortal who had left their legacy to the third Martial Sister before succumbing to madness. After all, the third younger Martial Sister was also a “protagonist,” and naturally, protagonists are born with a “golden finger.”
However, none of this mattered to Bai Lian for the time being. She was utterly drained after persuading Qiong Zhi to leave smoothly.
“Sleep,” Bai Lian murmured as she collapsed onto her temporary bed.
She estimated that the Flying Fog would recover from today’s chaos in a day or two. Then she could bid farewell to both Qiong Zhi and the jade rabbit.
Her plan was to take the Guangtong Sect’s flying boat back to the Duxian Sect. Though a bit expensive, it was fast, and—most importantly—she wasn’t banned from using their services. This way, she could return to the Duxian Sect before the 13th, just in time for the Lantern Festival.
This would be an excellent opportunity to bond with her two younger Martial Sisters. She couldn’t miss it.
—
When Bai Lian woke up, she was surprised to see fireworks lighting up the sky outside her window.
Red, green, and blue sparks crackled against the dark night, painting the room in flickering colors.
Curious, Bai Lian walked to the window and stared at the dazzling display. The fireworks were being set off near the divine light rising from the laurel tree.
It reminded her of the lively festivals at the Duxian Sect, almost enough to make her feel like she was home.
As she stepped out of her room, she encountered a bouncing demon beast on the road. Upon seeing her, the creature excitedly greeted her, “Haw!”
Although Bai Lian couldn’t understand its words, the warmth and friendliness in its tone were unmistakable.
She nodded and smiled, her heart softening.
The Flying Fog had cultivated its own civilization, a place where even demonic beasts with little cultivation ability could live peacefully.
Standing under the moonlit sky, Bai Lian gazed at the bright moon hanging over the sea. If Yaoguang Star Lord could see this thriving land, she would surely be pleased. Sometimes, for ancestors, seeing the younger generation live healthy, peaceful lives was all they could wish for.
—
Suddenly, a rabbit demon approached her. “Miss Bai Lian! Our king wishes to speak with you.”
Bai Lian hesitated before replying, “Please lead the way.”
Their destination turned out to be near the laurel tree.
“Is it really okay for an outsider like me to enter a sacred area?” Bai Lian asked cautiously.
The rabbit demon smiled. “Miss Bai Lian will soon be one of us.”
“…?”
Before she could ask more, the rabbit bounded away with a cheerful skip.
—
“Bai Lian,” called a voice, interrupting her thoughts.
She turned to see Qiong Zhi approaching, clad in a pale blue dress that radiated elegance and strength.
“Today is a happy day!” Qiong Zhi declared. “Yao Ye is being baptized under the laurel tree.”
Bai Lian nodded. “That’s wonderful news.”
Qiong Zhi smiled warmly. “When Yao Ye breaks through to the Soul Changing Stage, she will finally be able to transform into a human.”
Bai Lian smiled in return. “It seems like that day is not far off.”
After a moment of silence, Qiong Zhi asked, “What do you think of my daughter?”
Caught off guard, Bai Lian scrambled for an answer. “She is… kind, hardworking, and adorable.”
Qiong Zhi chuckled. “It seems you genuinely like her. That’s good.”
She looked away briefly, reminiscing. “My daughter has matured so much since leaving home. She was willful before, but now I see she’s truly growing. It’s all thanks to you.”
Bai Lian quickly waved her hands. “I’ve only done a small part. She’s been helping me as well.”
Qiong Zhi’s smile widened. “Good, good. A relationship is about mutual support.”
Before Bai Lian could process this, Qiong Zhi dropped a bombshell.
“Since you clearly care for my daughter, I agree to your marriage!”
“…What?”
Bai Lian froze, her mind going blank.
Qiong Zhi’s tone was firm. “When Yao Ye emerges from the laurel tree, I’ll arrange your wedding immediately.”
—
Bai Lian’s heart raced. Wedding?!
A system prompt appeared before her.
Task 1: Agree and say, “I will take care of the jade rabbit for the rest of my life!” (Reward: Breakthrough to Soul Changing Stage)
Task 2: Refuse outright. (Reward: Twin Rivers Clean Water, a secret medicine)
Bai Lian broke out in cold sweat. Agreeing to Task 1 was like walking into a death trap.
She thought of her Martial Sisters waiting for her at the Duxian Sect. What would they think if they heard about this?
Even worse, what about Si Yunshang? She might drag her entire sect to cause trouble!
Reluctantly, Bai Lian chose Task 2. “I’m sorry, but I cannot marry Yao Ye.”
Qiong Zhi’s face darkened. “Why not?”
Bai Lian remained composed. “Feelings take time. Besides, I’ve only known Yao Ye for half a year.”
Qiong Zhi’s voice sharpened. “Half a year is not short.”
“But love and friendship are different,” Bai Lian insisted. “As a mother, surely you understand this.”
Their conversation spiraled into a tense standoff. Qiong Zhi’s sharp gaze bore into Bai Lian. “You’ve touched my daughter’s body, haven’t you? How will you take responsibility for that?”
Bai Lian was stunned.
“…Excuse me?”
“Her legs, her ears—haven’t you patted her all over?”
What kind of logic is this?!
“I don’t think petting a rabbit counts as… that!” Bai Lian protested.
Qiong Zhi crossed her arms. “Just tell me—how are you going to be responsible for my daughter?”
“…”
Bai Lian was speechless. For the first time, she felt truly cornered. How was she supposed to escape this predicament?
Her only option was to delay and hope for an opening.
“I’d like to speak with Yao Ye personally,” she said finally.
Qiong Zhi narrowed her eyes. “Fine. But you’d better think carefully about your decision. I have patience—but it’s not unlimited!”
With that, she left the room in a huff, leaving Bai Lian to mull over her next move.
