Chapter 21: I Tell You That Bai Lian Is Garbage!
The Wushan Holy Palace was built deep within a vast canyon.
Among the four major sects, the Wushan Holy Palace, with its all-female disciples, was known for being the most low-key.
The disciples rarely ventured into the world, preferring solitude in remote retreats, only revealing their sharp prowess during ranking competitions.
Yet, underestimating the Wushan Holy Palace was a mistake many regretted. Over the years, countless arrogant individuals had been brought to their knees, their “evil roots” severed by the palace master.
—
The cold rain fell relentlessly.
In a pavilion amidst the palace, the master of the Holy Palace played chess with her eldest disciple.
Purple incense smoke coiled lazily in the air, and a spirit bird perched on the railing, preening its feathers.
Suddenly, a ray of light shot in from the outside.
“Master!”
The palace master calmly placed her chess piece. “What is it? Another fool here to challenge me?”
The disciple stepped out of the light, bowed deeply, and replied, “Yes, Master.”
The palace master’s lips curled into a sly smile.
Her sword had grown restless! It had been half a year since it tasted blood; it was time to renew its legacy on another unfortunate soul’s “little brother.”
“Capture the challenger. I will deal with them myself.” Her tone was icy.
“Yes, Master!” The disciple saluted but hesitated before adding, “However… the challenger is a woman.”
“A woman?”
The palace master froze.
Her sword suddenly seemed unnecessary—how troublesome.
Wait.
Even if I can’t use the blade, I can use the handle!
“Bring her to me!” she commanded.
The disciple hurried off.
The palace master shook her head and turned back to her chess game. “Let’s continue.”
She picked up a piece, but before she could make her move, another streak of light approached.
“Master! The disciples have been defeated by the intruder!”
The palace master frowned. “Where are the deacons?”
“They’ve been chained to a lance!”
“…”
She paused. “Send the deputy palace master.”
Moments later, the same disciple returned, trembling.
“Master, the deputy palace master is also chained to the lance!”
“Activate the Mountain Protection Talisman Array!”
“Master, the root of the array has been dug up!”
“Summon the Elders!”
“They… they are also chained to the lance!”
Clang!
The palace master knocked over the chessboard. She stared at the shaky remains of the Mountain Protection Array.
Who was this woman? How could she defeat the deputy palace master and the Elders so effortlessly?
“Is this the end of the Wushan Holy Palace?”
Determined, the palace master took up her sword. “Go to the Yanyu Building and call upon the Supreme Elders!”
Moments later, the disciple returned once more.
“Master, the Supreme Elders are also strung onto the lance.”
“…”
The sword slipped from the palace master’s hand.
It was over.
The Wushan Holy Palace would fall today. There would be no fifth major sect after this.
—
The disciple, noticing the despair in her master’s eyes, quickly interjected.
“Master, the woman isn’t here to destroy us.”
The palace master’s head shot up. “What do you mean? Then why has she beaten our Elders?”
“She says she seeks information to help her disciple avert a disaster.”
The palace master blinked. “And why attack my people?”
“She claims the gatekeepers and deacons insulted her.”
The palace master frowned. “What did they say?”
“They mocked her, saying, ‘How can an ant like you get the pity of the Wushan Goddess?’”
“…”
The palace master’s expression froze.
After a long silence, she asked, “What is her name?”
“Lian Bai.”
The name would be burned into the history of the Wushan Holy Palace.
—
Meanwhile, at the Duxian sect, people were busy preparing for the New Year.
Xiao Jinse had just finished sewing a new set of clothes for Bai Lian. Though Xiao Jinse had grudgingly made another for Su Youwei, the results surprised the younger martial sister—her dress fit perfectly and had an elegant charm.
Su Youwei turned in front of a mirror, her skirt fluttering. Her usual indifference gave way to a rare smile.
But then, her smile froze.
Her dress had an extra layer of padding at the chest.
She’s mocking me, Su Youwei thought grimly, her fist tightening.
Yet as she stared at her reflection, her anger softened. Despite the teasing, Xiao Jinse had put effort into the dress.
“Forget it,” Su Youwei muttered, letting the matter drop for the day.
—
Elsewhere, Bai Lian traveled with the jade rabbit aboard a massive flying boat. Concealing her identity, she hoped to finish her business and return before the Lantern Festival.
As the blue coastline of her destination appeared, she overheard a group of cultivators chatting nearby.
“Have you heard? Bai Lian of the Duxian sect has broken through to the Soul Changing Stage!”
“Impossible! My senior brother hasn’t even reached that stage yet. How can this scourge advance so quickly?”
Bai Lian’s ears perked up.
They were spreading rumors!
Determined to correct the record, she approached them with a smile. “Fellow Taoists, are you discussing Bai Lian?”
“Yes, we are!” one said indignantly.
Bai Lian scratched her head awkwardly. “You know, I’ve heard quite a few rumors about her myself. Honestly… Bai Lian is garbage!”
The group froze, then their expressions darkened.
“Excuse me? What did you say?”
“She’s trash,” Bai Lian repeated.
One cultivator sneered. “How dare you insult Martial Sister Bai Lian!”
“Huh?” Bai Lian blinked.
The cultivator growled, “You think just because I’m frustrated with her talent that I don’t admire her? Insulting Bai Lian is insulting all of us!”
Before Bai Lian could explain, they shouted, “You must be taught a lesson!”
—
Moments later, Bai Lian found herself unceremoniously thrown off the flying boat.
The deacon’s parting words echoed in her ears: “We don’t welcome anyone who insults Bai Lian. Here, take back your spirit stones!”
Standing by the riverbank, Bai Lian stared after the flying boat in disbelief.
“I was thrown off for insulting myself… What just happened?”
Her face darkened.
“Hey! Come back! I didn’t even finish explaining—I haven’t broken through to the Soul Changing Stage!”
But the boat had already vanished into the horizon.
