Chapter 13: Sister, Turn Yourself In! (1)
At the moment when the magical array outside the cave was shattered, the river began to flow backward, and the cave dug by the double-headed dragon was completely filled.
This was the perfect setting for Bai Lian to display her power.
She flicked her fingers, and a column of water surged forth.
As the mist rose into the air, the river split into countless tiny streams. For a brief moment, time seemed to stand still.
Then, with a deafening roar, the “giant hammer” of water struck the cave, forcing the Li River to resume its flow. The accumulated force smashed into the cave, completely erasing it from the riverbed.
Bai Lian admired her handiwork. “Special effects: 100 points. Destructive force: 10 points. But as long as it looks cool, it’s worth it!”
She nodded in satisfaction, her crescent-moon-shaped eyes glowing with delight. Turning to the jade rabbit and Qing Luan, she smiled. “Let’s go.”
As an exceptional individual, everything Bai Lian did looked flawless in Qing Luan’s eyes.
—
On the journey back, Bai Lian used an Earth Talisman for speed, but Qing Luan was too preoccupied to notice the scenery around them. Her mind was tangled with worry and unresolved thoughts.
At the base of Qiongming Peak, she said her farewell to Bai Lian with a slight bow, resembling a timid servant in front of a demanding mistress.
“…”
Watching Qing Luan’s retreating figure, Bai Lian felt puzzled.
Was she scared by how ruthlessly I killed the double-headed dragon?
Sighing, Bai Lian shrugged.
┓(´∀`)┏
She hadn’t intended to frighten anyone. It was just that the double-headed dragon’s strength had been exaggerated so much that her prepared formation flags, talismans, and snake-specific remedies had all gone unused.
As the sun began to rise in the eastern sky, Bai Lian looked up.
It’s almost dawn.
Yet, she still hadn’t decided on a suitable gift for the Blood Tree Patriarch.
—
Bai Lian took out the diary and traced the frosted black cover with her fingers.
For over 400 years, the strained relationship between Yan Yue and An Lan had remained unresolved. If left unaddressed, it could persist for countless more centuries.
The Blood Tree Patriarch had worked tirelessly to mend the rift. Otherwise, it wouldn’t have gone to the trouble of copying Yan Yue’s diary, annotating it, and secretly passing it to Bai Lian.
But Bai Lian felt increasingly anxious.
There was no such thing as eternal stability.
Even if An Lan stayed dormant, the enemy who had once defeated her would eventually return. It might take 20 or 30 years, but certainly not more than a thousand. When that day came, An Lan would face inevitable danger.
Even if Yan Yue and An Lan reconciled, what good would it do in the face of such a threat?
This was not the future Bai Lian wanted. She would rather see tears of joy than tragedy.
Tragedy? No. Comedy? Absolutely.
“As the Eldest Martial Sister of Qiongming Peak, I have to step up!”
Determined, Bai Lian decided to nudge the two awkward individuals toward reconciliation.
“Let’s head to Zhuyan Mountain!”
She scooped up the jade rabbit, who was squatting on the ground playing with flowers.
“Haw?”
The jade rabbit flailed its legs briefly but soon gave up, letting Bai Lian hold it high like a trophy.
Looking down at Bai Lian, the jade rabbit couldn’t grasp the situation but sensed her happiness.
Bai Lian’s cheeks were flushed, and the rising sun seemed even brighter.
Seeing her joy, the jade rabbit’s mood improved as well. It loved this carefree life, where all it had to do was follow Bai Lian’s lead.
Still…
No matter how wonderful a story is, it eventually reaches its end.
The jade rabbit glanced at a flower demon and thought, Haw haw (I believe Martial Sister Bai Lian will only get better).
Its face lit up with a smile more radiant than the flowers themselves.
—
Zhuyan Mountain
Bai Lian soon arrived at the forest where the Blood Tree Patriarch resided.
The aftermath of the previous battle had left the forest in disarray, but the trees had been replanted, and Yan Yue was nowhere to be seen.
Before Bai Lian could speak, the drowsy Blood Tree Patriarch trembled awake.
“Patriarch…” Bai Lian greeted it awkwardly.
She lacked high-grade nutrients or valuable treasures and had nothing to offer except a vague promise she wasn’t sure she could fulfill.
“I know why you’re here,” the Blood Tree Patriarch interrupted with surprising patience. Its wrinkled face formed a kind smile. Extending a branch, it revealed a drop of red liquid suspended at its tip.
“Come closer.”
The jade rabbit carefully handed over the injured flower demon.
With a soft “tick,” the drop of heart blood fell onto the flower demon’s stamen, and it revived before their eyes.
Bai Lian sighed in relief, though her sense of responsibility only grew heavier.
Reconciling Yan Yue was one thing, but dealing with An Lan would be far more challenging.
Her master’s obstinate personality was even harder to handle than her younger martial sisters. Bai Lian often thought of An Lan as a “Special Martial Sister No. 0” instead of a master.
“I’ve finished reading that diary,” Bai Lian said. “It’s a sad story.”
The Blood Tree Patriarch sighed. “Indeed.”
“I feel like I should do something about it.”
She held out the diary.
The Blood Tree Patriarch shook its branches. “Keep it. Whatever you wish to tell me, you can write it in there. Yan Yue will return soon.”
Bai Lian nodded. This arrangement would save her from frequent trips to Zhuyan Mountain.
After thanking the patriarch for its help, Bai Lian returned to Qiongming Peak with the jade rabbit.
—
Sunrise at Yunluo Peak
In a quiet room, Qing Luan clutched the metal card tightly in her palm. Even as pain shot through her hand, she refused to let go.
When the morning light illuminated the windowsill, she finally stood up and placed a miniature magical array in the four corners of the room.
You always have to face the truth eventually.
She picked up a jade slip and wrote:
“I have information related to Bai Lian. Come quickly.”
Hong Luan arrived faster than Qing Luan had anticipated—within just two hours.
Smiling, Hong Luan assumed Qing Luan had finally come to her senses.
“What information?”
That eager tone made Qing Luan’s disgust rise. She replied coldly, “Didn’t you want to know how strong Martial Sister Bai Lian is?”
“Of course,” Hong Luan replied, though the way Qing Luan addressed Bai Lian irritated her slightly.
“Have you heard of the demon beast double-headed dragon?” Qing Luan asked.
“And?”
“Martial Sister Bai Lian and I encountered it by the Li River,” Qing Luan said flatly.
“And then?”
“Elder Martial Sister Bai Lian killed it with just four sword strikes.”
Hong Luan’s eyes widened in disbelief. “You found the double-headed dragon?”
Ignoring the question, Qing Luan continued, “She defeated it effortlessly.”
Hong Luan’s pupils contracted. She knew firsthand how formidable the double-headed dragon was. With two heads and two internal pills, it was far stronger than most beasts of its level.
