Chapter 9: Differential Treatment
Bai Lian.
Si Yunshang’s mind went blank for a moment.
Over the past few years, she had heard that name countless times.
Her lips gently pursed and then suddenly parted, spitting out the word “Bai” from her throat.
Si Yunshang could guarantee she was one of the people who knew Bai Lian best in the world. Bai Lian might not even know herself better than Si Yunshang did!
After seeing the appearance of the girl who rushed in, Si Yunshang immediately came to an irrefutable conclusion—
It was her. Absolutely correct. This was Bai Lian, the Natural Saint of the Duxian sect!
The ★ in the corner of Bai Lian’s eye emitted a light blue glow, like the morning star hanging upside down over the deep blue sea.
Her temperament was exactly like the pure white flower described in the rumors. Just one glance was enough to make someone want to embrace her, share warmth, and dream together.
Regaining her composure, Si Yunshang murmured, “Why did Fairy Bai Lian suddenly appear here?”
Bai Lian replied calmly, “I’ve heard what Chen Lu said about you.”
Chen Lu?
Ah.
Si Yunshang remembered that name. That was what the “vicious” woman had called herself.
At the time, Si Yunshang had thought the woman was just retaliating against an enemy. But unexpectedly, her name truly was Chen Lu!
I was wrong.
Si Yunshang felt a little ashamed.
But…
Thinking about it carefully, it wasn’t entirely her fault. If that “vicious woman” hadn’t spoken nonsense, she wouldn’t have mistaken her for a liar.
Chen Lu… her real identity was the Elder Martial Sister of Yunluo Peak in the Duxian sect.
Comparing her with Bai Lian, the Elder Martial Sister of Qiongming Peak…
Forget it. Forget it.
Si Yunshang couldn’t bear to continue the comparison.
Could they even be compared? Absolutely not! By any measure, Chen Lu was no match for Bai Lian.
Regaining her composure once more, Si Yunshang said, “Fairy Bai Lian, what do you want from me?”
Her voice was gentle, and her attitude kind, like a geisha conversing with her guest.
Bai Lian’s body froze.
You didn’t have this attitude before!
She distinctly remembered that half a day ago, Si Yunshang had interrupted her mid-sentence and sneered with all sorts of sharp, cutting words.
Oh, woman.
Bai Lian said quietly, “Miss Si, are you the successor of the Lingxu sect?”
It was a question she had asked not long ago, but Si Yunshang hadn’t answered it.
This time, however, Si Yunshang didn’t hesitate.
Straightening her aching waist, she replied, “Yes and no.”
“What do you mean?”
Si Yunshang bit her lips. After a long pause, she asked, “Fairy Bai Lian, can I believe you?”
A series of task options appeared before Bai Lian’s eyes:
[Task 1]: “You are just a demon woman; you have no right to bargain with me!”
(Reward: Extinction Spirit Array)
[Task 2]: “You can trust me with everything, including yourself!”
(Reward: Top-grade magic tool: A Hundred Ghosts Scroll)
[Task 3]: “Believe it or not, it all depends on you. The truth I show is not necessarily what you want to see.”
(Reward: Wooden Puppet Symbol)
Bai Lian understood.
Si Yunshang’s road seemed riddled with dangers. One misstep, and she would fall, shattering completely.
But since Bai Lian had already “grabbed the wheel,” she couldn’t simply jump off the ride.
The priority now was driving safely.
Task 1 was out of the question.
The “A Hundred Ghosts Scroll” from Task 2 was an enticing reward. It was considered one of the most practical magic tools in the game.
At first glance, it seemed like a simple magic tool, but it was, in fact, a spirit Qi storage device! By capturing a hundred female ghosts, one could use it as a reserve tank for spirit Qi, eliminating the need for medical pills.
However, the game developers had been lazy and didn’t create battle animations for the ghosts.
Still, the memory of her younger martial sister flashed in Bai Lian’s mind, and she immediately steeled herself.
Demon woman? Am I that kind of person? Ridiculous!
Bai Lian made her choice.
“Believe it or not… it’s up to you,” she said.
[Task completed. Wooden Puppet Symbol delivered.]
Si Yunshang’s heart was stirred. Bai Lian’s words felt distant yet profound, making her seem untouchable.
But under these dire circumstances, Si Yunshang had no choice but to rely on Bai Lian.
She said, “Although I was talking peacefully with Zhou Kai when Chen Lu found me, the truth is… I am a sworn enemy of the Huaxin sect.”
What?
This revelation shocked Bai Lian.
“Are you lying to me?” she murmured.
Si Yunshang hesitated briefly before responding, “Destroying the Huaxin sect is my… leaving examination assigned by my master!”
Bai Lian frowned. “Is there a conflict between the Lingxu sect and the Huaxin sect?”
Si Yunshang shook her head. “No. If there were, the Huaxin sect wouldn’t still exist. This is my personal trial.”
“With your strength…?”
“Because it’s difficult, it’s called the leaving examination. Fairy Bai Lian, you must have come to Yuheng Mountain to investigate the recent mass disappearances. I can tell you that they’re the work of the Huaxin sect.”
Bai Lian’s eyes narrowed. “What’s their goal?”
“To awaken the ancient Demon Soul,” Si Yunshang said without hesitation.
Just as the game lore had suggested.
Even so, Bai Lian wasn’t entirely convinced Si Yunshang was telling the whole truth.
“Do you want to use us to destroy the Huaxin sect?”
“Cooperation is more important, Fairy Bai Lian. What do you think?”
Bai Lian nodded slightly.
“That’s right.”
Si Yunshang laughed softly, her tension easing. Talking with Bai Lian made her feel at peace, a stark contrast to Chen Lu, who only made her wary.
She had to admit there was a gap in their abilities. Compared to Bai Lian, Chen Lu’s intellect felt rudimentary.
“Fairy Bai Lian, you don’t need to be wary of me. I’m yours now. How could I plot against you?”
I won’t fall for that.
Bai Lian kept her guard up.
“In that case, let’s test this cooperation. Where should we start?”
“I’ll tell you the location of the White Tiger Hall of the Huaxin sect.”
After some thought, Bai Lian decided to investigate the White Tiger Hall later that night.
…
It was one o’clock.
Somewhere outside the Aurora Boat, Si Yunshang glanced nervously at the jade rabbit squatting nearby.
Earlier, she had tried escaping the boat but was mercilessly subdued by the jade rabbit’s ears. Since then, she hadn’t dared to act out again.
Where is Fairy Bai Lian? Why hasn’t she returned yet?
Just as the thought crossed her mind, she heard a creak.
“Bai…” Si Yunshang’s expression froze. “Why are you here?”
Standing before her wasn’t Bai Lian but the Ten Stars Evil Woman, Chen Lu.
What bad luck.
“Chen Lu” smirked. “Martial Sister Bai Lian can’t make it right now. She asked me to go with you instead.”
Si Yunshang felt her irritation rise but quickly suppressed it.
“…It’s late. Let’s go,” she said.
