Chapter 10: Carry Forward the Spirit of Righteousness!
The medicinal effects of [A Pool of Spring Water] surpassed even Bai Lian’s expectations.
They hadn’t walked more than half a mile when she sensed the small magic circle she had set up earlier had transformed into a battlefield of chaos—complete with metaphorical “gunfire” and “blood.”
Overcome by the desires ignited by the medicine, the spirit dog had pinned the unconscious cultivator under its front paws.
And then…
With a sharp, shrill cry, its “small electric motor” roared to life.
Fierce as fire!
The high-frequency assault was relentless, far beyond what an untrained individual could endure.
Bai Lian quickly averted her gaze, unable to stomach the sight any longer.
It’s horrifying!
Though the spirit dog fought valiantly now, it was only a matter of time before its mind was consumed by the medicine’s effects.
The brutality of “war” was starkly evident in that moment.
Bai Lian shook her head in disapproval before glancing to her left. She noticed Su Youwei studying her with a curious expression.
“Is there a problem?” Bai Lian asked.
Her tone toward Su Youwei, her third Martial Sister, was consistently gentle—a stark contrast to how she treated Xia Qingqing.
Naturally, this disparity wasn’t lost on Xia Qingqing, who couldn’t help but feel she’d been treated unfairly.
Why?
If they’d both been saved by Bai Lian, why was she the only one subjected to such harsh words?
Damn it!
Frustrated, Xia Qingqing kicked a small stone on the road, though the minor outburst went unnoticed by the others.
Meanwhile, Su Youwei hesitated before asking, “What did you do back at the inn?”
“I conducted an experiment,” Bai Lian replied casually.
“An experiment?”
Su Youwei tilted her head, confused.
Bai Lian explained, “If the elder Martial Brother Xia Qingqing contacted doesn’t arrive in time, we’ll need to rely on the ‘thing’ I just set up to leave Gray Wind Town.”
Su Youwei nodded, though she didn’t entirely grasp the plan.
No matter how wary she might be of Bai Lian, she had no choice but to depend on her now. Without Bai Lian’s strength, Su Youwei knew she wouldn’t stand a chance of rescuing her aunt and the fifth elder from this predicament.
She understood perfectly.
If it weren’t for her entanglements, Bai Lian could have left Gray Wind Town effortlessly. Even if the Red Moon Sect tried to stop her by force, they wouldn’t pose much of a threat. Su Youwei suspected Bai Lian had reached the Nascent Soul Stage—a level of power far beyond her reach.
How enviable.
Bai Lian was only two years her senior, yet Su Youwei couldn’t even see the faintest glimmer of hope of catching up to her.
Fate truly isn’t fair.
Thanks to Bai Lian’s exceptional divine sense, the group avoided any significant danger along the way.
However, as they approached an old house with three entrances and three exits, a distressed cry pierced the air.
“Let go of me!”
“Haha, scream all you want! No one will save you!”
“You beast!”
“Hey, hey, you’d better behave, or I’ll hand you over to the Law Enforcement Hall and claim you’re an accomplice of those dissidents. You know how cruel our Red Moon Sect’s punishments are, don’t you?”
“?”
Bai Lian froze for a moment.
Seriously? Do all bad guys use the same script?
At that instant, as if a switch had been flipped, Xia Qingqing’s entire demeanor shifted. Her back straightened, and her eyes gleamed.
Justice was calling!
Bai Lian immediately saw new task options appear in her system interface:
[Task 1: Treat it as if nothing happened. (Reward: Shengyou Pill)]
[Task 2: Continue scolding Xia Qingqing! (Reward: Tea Ceremony +1)]
The Shengyou Pill was a basic healing medicine—so basic, in fact, that even Bai Lian could concoct it herself. Its value was barely equivalent to an inferior magic tool.
The system’s meager reward suggested there wasn’t much danger in letting Xia Qingqing jump out and deliver justice this time.
But…
“Choose Task 2!”
Without a moment’s hesitation, Bai Lian made her decision.
If Xia Qingqing were back at the Tianji Sect, she likely wouldn’t have cared about the unfolding situation.
But now, standing beside Bai Lian, Xia Qingqing found herself under strict scrutiny. Bai Lian was determined not to give her any opportunity to act on her own.
With a fierce expression, Bai Lian scolded, “Did you already forget what I said earlier? What kind of trash is cluttering up your head?”
“I…”
Xia Qingqing, whose courage had just surged, instantly deflated.
Pouting in frustration, she wanted to retaliate but couldn’t muster the nerve to stand up to Bai Lian. Reluctantly, she lowered her head.
“I was wrong.”
“Hmph!” Bai Lian snorted, her voice dripping with disdain.
[Task completed. Tea Ceremony +1.]
After reprimanding Xia Qingqing, Bai Lian didn’t immediately leave. Instead, she extended her divine sense to observe what was happening inside the house.
In the corner of the room, a woman was trapped with nowhere to retreat.
The Red Moon Sect disciple appeared to savor her fear, taking his time instead of rushing forward.
One pervert, one victim.
Bai Lian quickly understood the situation.
No wonder the task’s reward was so meager.
Retracting her divine sense, she turned back, only to notice something unusual about Su Youwei.
“……”
The third Martial Sister, who had been calm since leaving the inn, now breathed heavily. Her eyes glowed red, and a sword-like murderous aura radiated from her body.
It wasn’t hard to guess what she was thinking. Su Youwei’s past life flashed vividly before her eyes like a cursed slideshow.
The destruction of her family, the endless torment, and the ridicule of being called “Shura” in the Sand Region—all of it stemmed from the Red Moon Sect. If not for the sect leader’s son, who had taken a twisted interest in her and her aunt, none of this would have happened.
The pain didn’t vanish with her rebirth. Instead, it had burrowed deep into her heart, festering.
When the walls she’d built around her heart cracked, those nightmares surged forth, threatening to drown her again.
Su Youwei clenched her fist tightly, her resolve hardening with each step.
She would exact vengeance. She would stain the ground with blood to silence her past and soothe her pain.
But before she could act, a firm grip caught her wrist.
Su Youwei looked up, startled.
Standing less than half a meter away, Bai Lian met her gaze. Her usually icy eyes carried an uncharacteristic warmth.
“Let go of me!” Su Youwei snapped.
Bai Lian shook her head. “Do you want to become a slave to your internal demon?”
The third Martial Sister’s story in the game replayed in Bai Lian’s mind. Su Youwei had been consumed by her internal demon, driven by her quest for revenge. Each act of vengeance only dragged her deeper into darkness.
In most plotlines, Su Youwei fell into evil ways, eventually becoming the world’s enemy. Even in good endings, Martial Sister Bai Lian had to sacrifice herself, becoming Su Youwei’s “slave,” just to accompany her.
She didn’t kill me to exact revenge, Bai Lian reflected. She was just too lonely. She couldn’t bear to be left alone again.
Su Youwei gritted her teeth. “I don’t need your concern!”
Bai Lian responded firmly, “I have to care about you.”
“Why?”
“Because I’m your Martial Sister.”
With one fluid motion, Bai Lian pressed Su Youwei’s sword back. “I’ll kill this man for you.”
The Dirt Free Sword appeared out of thin air in Bai Lian’s hand, gleaming with readiness.
Su Youwei’s eyes quivered. “What do you want from me?”
Her thoughts churned.
It must be my body.
She was certain no one knew about the Ten Thousand Poison Pearl hidden within her. So Bai Lian must have other motives—her body being the most obvious.
But Bai Lian’s voice cut through her paranoia. “I want you to understand that your priority now should be protecting your fifth elder and your aunt. Revenge can wait.”
“I…”
Before Su Youwei could respond, Bai Lian traced a single character—正 (righteousness)—onto her wrist using spiritual power.
“You can’t entirely eliminate your internal demon, but you can stop it from growing stronger. The key is to embrace the spirit of righteousness!
“Whenever you encounter something like this again, remember this word. You’re not alone anymore!”
Su Youwei’s lips parted as if to speak, but no words came out.
She watched Bai Lian walk away, her figure exuding an air of righteous conviction.
