Chapter 4 Part 2: Witch Queen, Bai Lian! (2)
He waited for a day.
He waited for a month.
He waited for a year.
Then ten years, a hundred years…
Even though he didn’t want to believe it, he had to admit that the girl was truly dead.
[Dirty Knife]
This is the knife with which the girl ended her life, after exhausting all possible methods.
It is two-thirds of a foot long, with a purplish-black, dull blade, and a handle made of solid Dark Stone, colder than ice.
When it burrows into the body, it leaves a half-inch wide wound.
The wound does not bleed, nor does it change color.
The person who is struck by it falls into a deep, dreamless sleep. It means that they fall asleep, never to wake again.
For many years after, Yougui searched for that invisible friend.
He wrapped himself in a black cloak to shield himself from the sunlight.
He walked down every road he knew the girl had traveled.
Ice fields.
Snow peaks.
Ravines.
Streams.
It is perhaps because he was born without much inspiration that he never encountered any invisible friends. But he did see many lost souls and wandering snow spirits.
Eventually, he returned to Hades Hall.
That was the first home the young girl had settled in after wandering for countless years.
He would spend the rest of his life guarding it.
This was both a promise and a way of showing gratitude.
This promise would last for thousands of years.
Even if the seas ran dry and the heavens fell apart, he would remain there.
Maybe one day, the girl would rise from her crystal coffin?
Therefore, while everyone else saw him as one of the old founding members of Hades Hall, he had actually been guarding it for ten thousand years.
He watched one Lord of the Hades Hall after another pass away.
He saw the Hades Hall gradually change and become a Demon Sect.
This process took so long that he forgot his own name. His body decayed slowly over time.
Even though he used every method to prolong his life, he eventually reached the end of his journey, unwilling to ascend to the Immortal World.
Yougui’s original plan was to stay until the current Lord of the Hades Hall passed away, then leave to spend his remaining days in the ice fields where he had once encountered calamity.
But heaven did not grant him his wish.
An evil insider had infiltrated Hades Hall.
This insider had colluded with a powerful outsider.
Even with his best efforts, Yougui could not reverse the inevitable downfall of Hades Hall.
“I am too old,” he sighed.
“I am no longer the young person who once roamed the world by your side.”
“Don’t speak of the East Divine Land. Even in North Luzhou, many younger generations have surpassed me.”
“In a few more years, I won’t be able to move at all.”
“By then, even if you return, you won’t recognize me.”
Yougui sighed deeply within the Sea of his Divine Sense.
Being a soul, he couldn’t shed tears, even though he longed to.
In the end, he had failed to fulfill the promise he made all those years ago.
Now, he could only remain quietly, waiting for death to come.
Is this really okay?
Even if there is only one drop of blood left, he still has a reason to keep fighting.
“But reasons alone can’t fill our stomachs, can they?”
He can’t move.
He can’t even feel his body.
The pain is unbearable.
Yougui felt himself slowly sinking into the abyss.
Until, suddenly, he felt a warmth.
The warmth came from a place his fingers could not touch.
He held his breath.
He listened, but heard nothing. Yet, he sensed something from the “heart.”
“This is…”
A throbbing sensation.
It was a feeling Yougui had never experienced before.
He felt as though he had caught onto something.
Yes.
Invisible friend!
This must be the invisible friend the girl spoke of!
Yougui’s body trembled uncontrollably.
He reached forward desperately.
No matter what, he had to grasp that “thing.” It was something he had spent his life searching for.
Boom.
The next moment, he stepped into thin air.
In zero gravity, he opened his eyes, and what greeted him was the sight of a thatched roof.
The sound of wind?
“…”
With all his effort, Yougui managed to climb out of bed.
He looked around, taking in his surroundings.
A straw hut!
So.
Had the warmth he felt just now been from the stove?
A feeling of loss lingered in Yougui’s heart.
But he got up unsteadily.
Now was not the time for such thoughts. As long as he still had breath left, he had to protect Hades Hall from the enemy.
“Certainly…” Yougui muttered to himself.
He pulled out the Dirty Knife that he had kept for over ten thousand years.
With each step he took, blood spilled onto the ground.
The pain tore at his senses and his soul.
But he didn’t care.
The heavy snow blurred his vision.
But he didn’t care.
The road ahead was long and winding.
But he didn’t care.
He knew that if Hades Hall was destroyed, even if the girl awoke, she would have no home to return to.
“I don’t care who you are. A Mahayana Stage cultivator? An immortal? A… god? If you dare destroy this home, I will kill you!”
In the snow, Yougui shivered as he muttered these words, rolling away.
Bai Lian felt like a very lucky person.
When she went out to buy vegetables, the price always dropped; when she played chess, she was guided by an expert; when she danced in the square, she always managed to seize the core position!
“I deserve it!”
Her heart felt lighter at the thought.
On the left side of the underground dark river was a huge ravine, known as Bronze Valley.
The valley was covered in green stones.
At the heart of it stood an ancient, majestic palace, seemingly buried in dust.
At the entrance of the palace, a giant dragon statue stood.
The dragon’s head held a candle, its eyes glowing with an ethereal light.
That glimmer illuminated the Bronze Valley.
Bai Lian took a quick glance.
According to the Soul Locking Flower, this is where the Lord of the Hades Hall resides.
She was feeling fortunate because there was a large magic array outside the palace.
People outside the magic array could not see what was happening inside, and those within the array could not see beyond it.
Even if she held a loud concert outside the palace at that moment, the people inside wouldn’t react.
However…
“If you want to uncover the truth, skirting around the edges won’t do— you have to go deeper.”
She approached the half-open door, and as expected, the system activated.
[Task 1: Stand at the entrance and wait (Reward: Focus +14)]
[Task 2: Rush in directly (Reward: Focus +14)]
[Task 3: Turn around and leave (Reward: Focus +14)]
“Huh?” Bai Lian gasped in surprise.
The tasks recently issued by this system were becoming harder to understand.
But regardless of that, the 14 points of Focus were causing Bai Lian much pressure.
Her strength had improved greatly, but the risk of gaining even +1 Focus was now higher than before.
Without the Immortal Spirit Stone, she wouldn’t survive the storm.
But, from another perspective, Bai Lian knew the task wasn’t impossible.
“Let’s go with Task 2!”
If the Lord of the Hades Hall was not dead, rushing in was the only way to save him.
Bai Lian stepped through the gates of the palace, her left hand holding a bundle of Spiritual Herbs, and her right gripping an Immortal Spirit Stone.
Buzz.
The ripples spread outward.
The Bronze Valley fell silent once more.
There was no grand experience. After passing through a wide avenue, Bai Lian arrived at a massive altar nearby.
She saw several people standing at the altar.
Some of them she recognized, such as the Lord of the Hades Hall and the Third Leader of the Hades Hall, Black Spirit Lord.
There were also others she didn’t know.
Finally, her gaze landed on a grey-clad man who seemed to be a leader.
She had a vague feeling that she had seen him before.
But she was certain she had never seen his face.
“That’s…”
At that moment, a person on the tall altar, who had been yawning, suddenly twisted his head around.
Upon seeing Bai Lian’s sudden appearance, he was clearly stunned.
The next moment, he let out a loud, deafening shout:
“Holy shit, isn’t that Bai Lian?”
“What? Bai Lian?”
“Where’s Bai Lian?”
“Are you daydreaming?”
“Motherfucker, stop causing a scene!”
In the midst of a barrage of insults, more than ten people at the altar turned their gaze toward her.
The most extreme reaction came from Jiang Jing.
He stretched his neck and opened his mouth into an O-shape, shocked as though someone had grabbed his throat.
She appeared.
That “woman,” who could lure countless foot fetish criminals with her name in the Immortal World, had appeared!
This state didn’t last long.
Jiang Jing had a strong heart.
Even during the peak of Green Moon Sword Venerable, this madwoman hadn’t been able to kill him, let alone Bai Lian, whose cultivation had plummeted after her reincarnation.
Don’t panic!
He waved his hand and walked toward Bai Lian on his own.
“Bai Lian!” Jiang Jing stood tall, looking down at her, and shouted, “No, it’s more fitting to call you Witch Queen!”
Witch Queen?
Bai Lian was completely confused.
Was this an insult about her being an old witch?
Go away! I’m only 21 years old!
Jiang Jing didn’t know what Bai Lian was thinking, but he continued shouting.
“You are very clever and possess great powers that can suppress everything. But no matter how smart you are, you can never calculate my existence!”
“Witch Queen, I’m in the dark, and you’re in the light. In the end, I’m still one step ahead. Ahahaha…”
“…”
What is he even saying?
Jiang Jing’s face darkened.
The Witch Queen was so fearless that even his provocation didn’t shake her at all.
But, just like he said…
It’s too late.
“Go to the coffin!”
He shouted.
And, to Bai Lian’s shock, a crystal coffin floated out.
“The path to the Underworld is about to open, and neither Immortal Emperor nor Heavenly Lord can escape the shackles of the Underworld.”
Jiang Jing laughed.
“Witch Queen, today you must die!”
