Chapter 7: Bai Lian’s Words (2)
On the Qiongming Peak.
Watching Ying Shi’s figure fly away, Bai Lian threw the eggplant and radish in her hands aside.
They no longer had any “use” value.
“It’s too dangerous.”
Bai Lian retrieved the books once more.
Typically, books of this nature had limited circulation. After all, they were written by mortals in their spare time.
For an ordinary person, spreading a book far and wide would take decades, even centuries. Making books on such niche topics well-known was as difficult as ascending to the heavens.
But Bai Lian didn’t dare take the risk.
If cultivators purchased these books as she did and shared them with others…
Well.
It was entirely possible that Ying Shi would stumble upon one of them someday.
Although she could insist that Ying Shi was slandering her, the situation would still be troublesome.
Bai Lian didn’t consider herself a good person, but she was by no means someone of depraved moral character.
She clenched her fists in frustration.
“The person who made this system must be a complete jerk! Saying I have no morals? Hilarious!”
Decision made.
Since she had free time, Bai Lian planned to write biographies based on the titles of the three books she had.
Once written, she would distribute them secretly.
If Ying Shi ever uncovered the truth, she could simply claim that she had taken the wrong books.
At that time, she would maintain a straight face and say, “It’s just a coincidence!”
“I’m truly a genius!”
Bai Lian snickered.
Wonderful!
This plan was as close to perfect as it could get.
She sat before the dressing table, ready to start writing immediately.
It was already near noon, and outside the window, heavy rain and strong winds raged on.
Just as Bai Lian grasped the pen, she saw her Fifth Martial Sister happily running past the window.
“Ah ah ah…”
The little girl had no umbrella, and her cheeks were wet with rain, but it couldn’t hide the bright smile on her face.
“…”
Moments later, before Bai Lian could lower her head, the Fifth Martial Sister ran past from the other direction.
“Ah ah ah…”
She was even wetter this time.
“…”
Clap.
Bai Lian gently put the pen down.
She frowned—not because of the noise, but because she was concerned about the Fifth Martial Sister’s safety.
What if she caught a cold?
Granted, her physical condition was excellent, and under normal circumstances, catching a cold was nearly impossible.
But… what if she slipped and fell off the cliff?
Bai Lian couldn’t just sit idly by!
She stood up and walked out of the room.
Lifting her umbrella, she stepped into the rain.
Though she was injured, she didn’t need an umbrella at all.
She held it only to set a good example for her Fifth Martial Sister.
As the Elder Martial Sister, she didn’t want to leave an impression of being domineering or unreasonable.
In the backyard, near the crooked-neck tree, Bai Lian stopped.
She saw her Fifth Martial Sister running toward her.
“Elder Martial Sister!”
Upon seeing Bai Lian, the girl came to an abrupt halt.
Rain trickled down her brow, but whether it was the rain or the natural brightness of her eyes, Bai Lian couldn’t tell.
Bai Lian took two steps forward.
The umbrella tilted, sheltering the little girl’s head.
In that moment, as the rainwater was cut off, the world fell into silence.
Ling Xuan and Bai Lian locked eyes.
It was a little difficult.
Rain kept running into Ling Xuan’s eyes. Her sleeves were wet, and no matter how much she wiped, they wouldn’t dry.
“Let me do it.”
Bai Lian took out a towel and tenderly wiped Ling Xuan’s hair.
The little girl gradually lowered her head.
She had expected Elder Martial Sister Bai Lian to scold her for playing in the rain.
Her grandfather used to scold her—and even beat her—when she did this before.
“Sorry, Elder Martial Sister. I shouldn’t have run out to play in the rain.”
Ling Xuan sniffled.
But Bai Lian, seemingly unfazed by the apology, asked, “Where is the Jade Rabbit?”
Ling Xuan quickly explained, “Elder Martial Sister, this isn’t the Jade Rabbit’s fault! She has her own things to do. She can’t always stay with me to cultivate.”
Bai Lian gently shook her head. “I didn’t mean to blame the Jade Rabbit.”
She continued to carefully wipe the little girl’s cheeks.
Hearing those words, Ling Xuan immediately felt relieved.
This was her own mistake. She alone should be punished—her Elder Martial Sister Jade Rabbit was innocent!
With this thought in mind, Ling Xuan suddenly turned around, presenting her back to Bai Lian.
“Elder Martial Sister, hit me.”
Her voice quivered slightly, still carrying a hint of fear.
“Gently… gently…”
Bai Lian stared at the small, shivering figure.
Though young, she could already faintly see the shadow of the Martial Arts God she would become in the future.
The familiar hairstyle.
The familiar clothing.
The familiar expression.
In the game The Battle of the Gods, the Fifth Martial Sister had joined Qiongming Peak as a young girl.
Now, she was still just a child, two months away from turning eleven.
In another world, most children her age would still be enjoying the warmth of school life.
Bai Lian’s gaze softened.
She stopped wiping her face and suddenly asked, “Isn’t it lonely being alone?”
Ling Xuan hesitated before nodding slightly. “Mmm.”
Her soft voice barely reached Bai Lian’s ears.
Bai Lian pulled her into a gentle embrace.
“Elder Martial Sister, your clothes will get wet.”
Ling Xuan struggled slightly, but she couldn’t escape Bai Lian’s arms.
Then, she heard the unexpected words, “I’m sorry.”
She froze.
Slowly raising her head, her blurry vision was met with Bai Lian’s slightly hazy face.
Bai Lian said, “I was the one who brought you to the Duxian Sect, yet I completely ignored you. If I had spent more time with you, you wouldn’t have felt so lonely.”
“Elder Martial Sister…”
Ling Xuan’s vision blurred even further.
Her voice trembled. “I didn’t want to disturb your cultivation.”
Bai Lian smiled faintly. “How could that be? I am a reincarnated Immortal Emperor. Raising my cultivation is easy!”
“Really?” Ling Xuan asked uncertainly.
“Of course!”
Bai Lian wiped away the little girl’s tears.
A small gesture—yet it carried immense warmth.
But instead of stopping, Ling Xuan’s tears poured out even more fiercely.
Even more than the rain outside.
“Elder Martial Sister…”
With teary eyes, she threw her arms around Bai Lian’s waist.
She had been cold while running in the rain.
Now, in Bai Lian’s embrace, warmth spread through her entire body.
The warmest place in the world—was right here.
The spring rain continued to fall.
Nestled in Bai Lian’s arms, Ling Xuan whispered, “I wish I could grow up faster.”
Bai Lian sighed softly.
“You will, soon enough.”
Seeing that the fifth Martial Sister was not answering, Bai Lian suddenly said,
“Let’s measure our heights!”
“Eh?”
“Follow me.”
Bai Lian pulled the fifth Martial Sister under the eaves.
She let her lean against the outer wall of her room. Once the fifth Martial Sister stood straight, Bai Lian used her fingernails to make a deep mark on the stone pillar at the top of her head.
She said,
“We will measure you each year, and when you are taller than the Third Elder Martial Sister, you will have grown up.”
Ling Xuan hesitated.
“But when I grow taller, wouldn’t Third Elder Martial Sister grow taller too?”
No.
Her height would no longer grow.
Of course, Bai Lian would never say such cruel words.
Instead, she smiled gently.
“Let’s aim for the Third Elder Martial Sister’s current height!”
“Hmm!”
Ling Xuan nodded vigorously.
When she grows up, she won’t be a burden to Elder Martial Sister Bai Lian anymore.
When she grows up, everything will be different.
The spring rain continued to fall.
Ling Xuan pressed closely against Bai Lian.
Together, they silently watched the misty mountain rain.
The wind was gentle. The rain was fine.
No wonder spring sorrows pile on little by little.
