Chapter 11: Spring Rain Is Enough to Dye a Stream With New Green (1)
This narrow little room had become a sanctuary.
The spring rain outside fell continuously, its rhythm gentle yet persistent.
Inside, the room was filled with a soothing fragrance, making everything feel peaceful.
It was as if one wall separated two worlds—one full of the outside chaos, the other an oasis of calm.
Xiao Jinse, holding Bai Lian’s feet in her hands, felt the coolness of her velvety skin and inhaled the delicate flower scent that
lingered in the air.
Her heart, once restless, began to calm.
She could feel a strange, magical power emanating from Elder Martial Sister Bai Lian.
When she could only look from afar, a part of her longed to get closer to Bai Lian. Those feelings filled her mind with strange
thoughts—thoughts of wanting to stay near her.
But as soon as she held Bai Lian’s feet, all those thoughts disappeared in the blink of an eye.
It felt as if she were holding something sacred, something beyond the mundane.
She thought to herself, My heart is at peace now.
Should she stroke her feet?
Or perhaps, should she try to gauge what Bai Lian might feel for her?
But Xiao Jinse quickly stopped herself.
Her eyes became clearer than the hot water in the basin.
What she held in her hands was not just a foot, but something far more precious—a piece of porcelain, a work of art, a
manifestation of the Great Tao.
How could she do anything to harm such a thing?
Xiao Jinse blinked, her thoughts turning towards the so-called “Demon Women” outside. They seemed so weak compared to
Elder Martial Sister Bai Lian.
In terms of charm and allure, Bai Lian stood unmatched. No one could dare claim to surpass her in that regard.
Perhaps that was why Bai Lian was not surrounded by people—her brilliance, her radiance, created a halo that pushed others
away.
Xiao Jinse smiled inwardly. She’s like a burning piece of ice, emitting a glaring white light.
That was the first impression most people had of Bai Lian.
But Xiao Jinse knew better.
Bai Lian wasn’t aloof by nature.
It was simply a protective shield—her way of keeping others at a distance.
Her aloofness is just a protective color!
In Xiao Jinse’s eyes, Bai Lian was broad-minded and warm-hearted, serious and resolute like fire.
Xiao Jinse once witnessed her Elder Martial Sister spending an entire afternoon chatting with an elderly widow, comforting her in
a way no other cultivator would.
An entire afternoon.
Even cultivators with lower qualifications would use that time to circulate their cultivation method at least twice. Yet Bai Lian spent
it comforting someone, offering her companionship and warmth.
It struck Xiao Jinse as pure foolishness—if viewed from a cultivator’s perspective.
But Xiao Jinse cherished this side of Bai Lian, for it revealed her true character.
She had also witnessed Bai Lian helping a woman whose husband had died in a shipwreck. After the woman received the news,
Bai Lian walked with her down the familiar paths they had once shared, under the setting sun.
Bai Lian said, “It is because I live for a long time that I cherish the present even more. When I lose track of time, life will merely be
existence. I won’t be able to appreciate it anymore.”
Xiao Jinse didn’t fully understand where such emotions came from.
But she didn’t need to understand.
She only knew that every moment with Bai Lian was precious.
Xiao Jinse thought back to their first meeting.
The gazes of a thousand people had felt like a gust of wind that nearly crushed her spirit.
Then, out of nowhere, Bai Lian had appeared, lifting her up and saying, “Don’t bully this poor young girl!”
Had anyone else said those words, Xiao Jinse might have felt embarrassed.
But from Bai Lian, it was different.
She didn’t care about feeling awkward.
What mattered was that in those words, she found the warmth and protection she so desperately needed.
I will protect the children of our family!
Xiao Jinse’s eyes shone brightly, like morning stars.
In her eyes, Bai Lian was the shooting star that had saved her life twelve years ago.
“Elder Martial Sister,” Xiao Jinse whispered, gently pinching Bai Lian’s big toe.
Bai Lian, momentarily startled, slowly woke from her nap. She glanced down at Xiao Jinse, who remained still, confusion on her face.
Xiao Jinse quietly remarked, “I noticed your temperature has risen quite a lot since before.”
“Really?” Bai Lian asked, a flicker of surprise crossing her face.
“Yes.” Xiao Jinse nodded, affirming what she had felt.
She could feel it with certainty: Bai Lian’s feet were much warmer than before.
As for other parts of her… well, she hadn’t touched them, so she couldn’t say.
To a normal person, Bai Lian’s feet might still feel cool, but they were warmer than the ice blocks they once were.
“Try again,” Bai Lian urged.
Xiao Jinse held her wrist gently and nodded after a moment. “Yes, it’s the same with your feet—it’s much warmer.”
Bai Lian fell silent, a perplexed expression crossing her features.
Why did she feel like she was worlds apart from herself?
Placing her hand over her chest, she could feel her heartbeat—nothing more, nothing less. The temperature Xiao Jinse spoke of
remained elusive.
But Xiao Jinse wouldn’t deceive her.
Bai Lian recalled that her body had always been colder than normal, and the thought had lingered for years.
She had always assumed it was a sign of something special—a possibility of becoming an Immortal Emperor.
She had long held out hope that it was the legendary Nine Yin Xuan Mei Body, the one that could help her absorb others’ qi,
ascend the Dao, and rise to immortality.
But then…
Then, the memories of “The Battle of the Gods” returned, throwing all of her hopes into disarray.
Bai Lian had realized, with dismay, that there was no special constitution for her.
Yet, this wasn’t the main issue. What troubled her was the chill that never left her body.
Was it connected to her cultivation method?
After a quick search, she dismissed that idea.
But something strange kept tugging at her thoughts.
She remembered something her Master had said: the “death words” on her body had diminished. And as they faded, her body
temperature had risen.
Was this the key?
The more she thought about it, the more convinced she became.
Once those death words were gone, she would be just like everyone else—a normal person, with normal warmth.
How to remove them remained unclear.
But Bai Lian held onto the hope that someday she would find a way.
As the ancients said:
Where there is a will, there is a way. If the mountain is high, travelers will find a path; if the river is deep, boatmen will ferry people
across.
Climbing mountains and swimming through deep waters? Those were her specialties.
Outside, the wind and rain swayed the trees. Inside, Bai Lian’s mood lightened, like sunshine breaking through the clouds.
Rather than standing apart from others, she longed to blend in, to be like everyone else.
At that moment, Xiao Jinse’s voice broke through her thoughts.
“Elder Martial Sister?”
“What is it?” Bai Lian asked softly.
Xiao Jinse hesitated before speaking again, “Is it because you can’t operate your cultivation method recently?”
Bai Lian immediately understood. Xiao Jinse had mistakenly thought her low body temperature was a result of her cultivation
method.
She nearly denied it, but then realized there was some connection.
To avoid worrying Xiao Jinse, she decided it was best to leave the full truth unsaid.
But Xiao Jinse’s worried expression didn’t fade.
