Chapter 11: The Path of the Immortal Emperor (3)
Bai Lian opened her mouth.
“Bai Lian.”
Xia Qingqing interrupted her.
“I know that you scold me, beat me, and trample me for my own good, but this time, it’s different. There are some things that can’t be reasoned away.
That’s my father.
He encountered danger searching for the Evergreen Vine—for me. I can’t just let it go.”
“You may want to persuade me to take a long-term view, just like Martial Brother Zhao, but I can’t do it. My father suddenly appeared… something big must have happened.
If I miss this chance, I might never see him again.”
Bai Lian said nothing.
She understood. The sudden appearance of Xia Guiyuan was too convenient—too obvious. It had all the makings of a trap.
Xia Qingqing forced a smile, then, without warning, she opened her arms and pulled Bai Lian into a tight embrace.
“I’m sorry, Bai Lian. Not long ago, I promised you that I wouldn’t act on impulse anymore… But I guess I’m a woman of short memory.”
Bai Lian felt it—
The hot tears soaking into her collar, rolling down into her chest.
Unnecessary.
After all, it was I who pulled you back like this.
Xia Qingqing continued, her voice trembling.
“If you were in danger, I would save you. Even if I had no power, at the very least, I would choose to die with you.”
Bai Lian stiffened.
I’m not worth it.
At least… you are not as important to me as I am to you.
A strange discomfort settled in her heart.
She reached out, gently stroking Xia Qingqing’s head, then chided her softly.
“Don’t say such foolish things. Just do your best. That will be enough.”
Xia Qingqing giggled playfully.
She tried to act like nothing was wrong, but her acting was so poor that Bai Lian saw right through her.
But…
I should play along with you.
“Yes. Just do my best, and everything will be fine.”
Bai Lian nodded.
The risk of 13 points of Hard Skill wasn’t enough to put her in a true life-or-death situation.
She could give it a try.
At that moment, Bai Lian thought of her Master and Martial Sisters.
If she died while helping Xia Qingqing, they would be devastated.
…
If she died, Master An Lan would surely turn the East Divine Land upside down.
Then Yue Wuyang would discover An Lan’s true identity as the Immortal Heavenly Lord.
Then An Lan’s enemies would descend upon this world and either capture or exterminate her.
Tragedy.
A tragedy, a tragedy—it would all be a tragedy.
But…
Bai Lian sighed softly.
Some things… simply can’t be decided with reason alone.
When she had only been a player, she would get emotional over the experiences of the game’s characters.
Now that she had truly stepped into this world, formed bonds, and built relationships, she could no longer remain purely rational.
[Someone as foolish as me is destined to never reach the peak of immortality.]
With an awkward smile, Bai Lian patted Xia Qingqing’s back.
“I should thank you—for trusting me.”
And, by the way…
Martial Brother Zhao of the Tianji Sect, I should thank you too.
Even though you and Tong Yao Martial Sister are always spreading ridiculous rumors about me, those undeserved reputations have given me a kind of power that’s hard to explain.
I keep moving forward—not just because I want to save something, but perhaps also because I’m chasing after the dream of that “Fairy Bai Lian.”
Choose Task 1.
Bai Lian made her decision.
She would face the risk of 13 points of Hard Skill.
There was nothing to be afraid of anymore.
“I’ll go with you!”
A faint smile spread across Xia Qingqing’s face.
But she quickly composed herself—because this was Bai Lian.
Since their first meeting, she had known.
Even though Bai Lian always spoke rationally, when real danger came, she was the first to rush in.
“If there’s danger, please leave me immediately,” Xia Qingqing said.
Bai Lian was about to shake her head, but—
“Otherwise, your Martial Sisters will be sad. I don’t want them to hate me.”
“…?”
Are my Martial Sisters such petty people?!
Bai Lian felt a tinge of dissatisfaction.
It was time to go.
At first, they had considered leaving Zhao Haiya behind.
But—
“He is also my master. I consider him my father as well.”
The look in Zhao Haiya’s eyes mirrored Xia Qingqing’s just moments before.
…Fine.
We’ll go together.
The Cloud Chasing Boat changed course.
They headed east, arriving near the Flying Fog on the second evening. Then, they turned south—toward Qingxu, the place where the Green Emperor ascended into the Immortal World.
The setting sun painted the sea in hues of gold and crimson.
At the bow of the boat, Bai Lian and Xia Qingqing stood side by side.
Bai Lian’s voice was distant.
“I’ve been reading some ancient texts recently.”
“Hm?”
Xia Qingqing turned to her.
“It is said that the Green Emperor slew the Sea Emperor in the coastal region of the East Divine Land.
I suddenly realized something—when those ancient books refer to the coastal region of the East Divine Land, they’re talking about the shores near the Flying Fog.”
Fate, perhaps.
Bai Lian smiled faintly.
If Xia Qingqing hadn’t had that strange dream—
If Bai Lian hadn’t seen her draw vitality from the plants and trees—
She wouldn’t have made this connection.
“The ancient texts also say that the Green Emperor was the ruler of all plant life in the world.”
Bai Lian reached out, pointing toward the narrow coastline.
Under the warm glow of the setting sun, the withered trees began to turn green again.
Young branches sprouted tender buds.
At a glance, an endless sea of emerald green stretched as far as the eye could see.
A breathtaking sight.
Xia Qingqing stood mesmerized, momentarily losing herself in the view.
Bai Lian gazed alongside her.
After the cold winter, spring had returned to the land.
They were walking the road to Qingxu.
But she did not know—
Was this truly the Path of the Immortal Emperor?
