Chapter 628: Deceiver

On a cold rainy night, there was moonlight.

Among the ruins, next to the dragon’s body.

Once as close as family, master and disciple now lifted their swords towards each other.

The past kindnesses have vanished into thin air, the most ironic being that the person once thought of as a close relative is actually the enemy who destroyed one’s home and family.

Is there hatred in your heart?

Some.

Do you really hate it to the core?

No.

Longque really wanted to escape, to turn around and run away from this moment, but her heart was so complicated. The past self who always lived with a clear and simple view of values, for the first time, felt the difficulty of making a choice, and experienced the intertwining of love and hate.

A pain more piercing than physical pain surged up, and immense sorrow was about to engulf her.

"Stand up," Bai Wei said coldly, "or do you want to kneel down and beg for death?"

"…" Longque shook her head vigorously.

Once again, she stood up, trembling as she held onto the sword.

She didn’t want to die.

Maybe it was the dragon blood inside her and the lingering memories roaring, driving her survival instinct. Maybe it was the habit she had developed over time. Maybe it was Bai Wei’s repeated teachings that she must never easily give up on living, not at any time.

Her trembling arm stopped, then she took a deep breath, and white smoke floated from her body. The water vapor was evaporating, the dragon’s blood was boiling, and power was roaring inside her.

"That’s right. If you don’t want to be killed, you have to pick up the sword to protect yourself. You are chosen to slay dragons, so you must kill anything that could become a dragon, or be killed by a dragon and become its nourishment." Bai Wei touched the blade of the sword with his left hand and chuckled deeply. "I have been waiting for you for over a decade, watching you grow stronger day and night, like waiting for the melon to ripen and fall off the vine. You’d better not hold any thoughts of surviving from this sword."

Longque said. You are not a master…

She gripped the sword, "You are the only dragon."

The previous sentence she held great sorrow, the following sentence turned as cold as rainwater.

Breathed out countless water mists.

She stepped forward and launched an assault, Longque swung the sword horizontally, ripping through the air, splitting the rainwater as if a child fiercely scratched the ground with a stick, parting the water flow and leaving a ravine splitting the ground.

In the clang of the collision, the two weapons forged by the same person clashed. The crisp sound burst out like the lament of weapons, sparks flying. Bai Wei took a step forward, holding only a slim hilt, pressing her down to one knee with one hand, followed by a sweeping kick, making Longque fly back and collide with a partially burnt tree, the impact breaking the ancient wood.

"She’s fast, but not strong enough," Bai Wei evaluated her weaknesses as a teacher, "You excel at slaying dragons, but struggle in human combat. You have faced many beasts, but lack experience with people. Your speed is good, but lacks finesse."

Longque stepped forward again, this time swinging her sword with smaller movements than before. As the blades clashed, she quickly switched hands, gripping Xia Longque’s blade handle with her left hand on top of her right hand wrist, then pushed forward with force.

Bai Wei deflected the force with a slanted weapon, showing strength comparable to a tiger’s, but lacking in precise control. The weapon lost accuracy, grazing Bai Wei’s shoulder as the Crouching Tiger Sword arrived in front of Longque.

Her shoulder bloomed with blood.

"Hmm…"

Holding her wound, Longque took a few steps back, "You could have killed me just now."

"Yes, but killing too easily wouldn’t give me a sense of accomplishment," Wei Long said lightly, "Show some real skills. If you keep this up, my patience will run out. If you seek death, I’ll grant it to you."

With those words, he swung his sword, releasing a surge of dark energy that was thick and heavy, like a massive boulder crashing down.

Longque narrowly avoided the swing by a hairbreadth.

A swift kick landed on her chest, almost breaking her ribs in two.

She flew far away, like a soccer ball kicked strongly by a powerful giant.

At the very beginning, Longque also suffered beatings from her master like this. The pain was still unbearable, but enduring it in the past was to become stronger, enduring it now is to… stay alive!

With one hand pressed against the ground, Longque’s fingers sank into the stone and soil, leaving five-finger imprints on the ground. Her fingers resembled dragon claws, deeply piercing into the stone, leaving sharp scratch marks. Her nails and bones had morphed, becoming sharp, unbreakable.

Her eyes began to change color, turning dark red, indicating an increase in body temperature and blood pressure. Blood flow speed increased, her body operated rapidly in an overclocked state, adapting to the evolution brought by the dragon blood. She needed a lot of oxygen, so each breath seemed to suck the air dry, releasing heat. Fine scales grew on her wrists, ankles, and neck, the scales slightly opened, resembling skin breathing.

Her appearance gradually changed, becoming more dragon-like, unsure whether she still retained a human heart.

"Ha! That’s more like it," Bai Wei was very pleased, raising the tip of his sword, "Come on!"

The two dragons began to fight each other.

Their strength and speed were so close that each collision brought an unbearable impact to the ground. The battlefield quickly expanded, from a hundred meters to five hundred meters, then to a thousand meters, and finally to several thousand meters. Once-ruined cities became complete ruins.

They stopped talking and just kept fighting each other.

There was no love, only cruelty wanting to tear each other apart.

Every clash of weapons sparked memories up in flames, like an old photograph being burned.

The two people in the photo used to walk through all four seasons together, now there is only ashes left.

Abandoning emotions means abandoning constraints.

There were never any chains from the beginning, family love is an illusion, love is an illusion, dependence is an illusion, only hatred is deepest and most real.

The fierce flames of anger started to burn and grow, as if drinking poisoned wine inside, the deadly poison kept growing, devouring oneself, and slaughtering enemies.

Surprisingly, in this crazy slaughter, they found a little joy, some comfort, and excitement.

Just like a dragon, born with power, born with the choice of destruction or survival, for reasons unknown, needing no reasons at all.

The ground seemed to be on fire, with the black power of the dragon resembling burning black flames, spreading a layer of black dandelions on the ground. Dust particles floated in the air, rising and falling with each collision of swords, making them fly further.

Two monsters ignoring gravity chased each other, playing tirelessly from midday to the end of the heavy rain.

Dawn was yet to arrive, but the breaking of dawn was nearing.

Following the fading trail of a shooting star, two figures fell from the sky, crashing onto the ground. The heavy impact created a depression in the earth, but the soft soil absorbed the shock. The person lying in the pit below opened their mouth, spitting out blood that evaporated into a mist in the air. The hot blood gradually cooled down.

Bai Wei descended from the sky, the sword in his hand piercing through the center of her chest. The sword named Great Xia Longque was broken, its fragments scattered like withered flowers across the ruins.

It wasn’t a sword that could withstand a lot of wear and tear, so it eventually broke. The sword in Bai Wei’s hand was also in bad condition, leaving numerous marks and wounds, like a badly injured warrior struggling to survive and unlikely to recover to its former glory.

Longque, lying below, softly said. Am I having a nightmare?

Bai Wei lowered his head, rain mixed with blood, muddy on her cheek.

He said. It’s a nightmare, it will be over soon.

Longque asked. Can you give me a hug?

Bai Wei hesitated for a moment, then gently bent down, reaching out his hand to tidy up the messy hair near her ear. His movements were slow and careful, like braiding a little girl’s hair with caution. However, his other hand still held the handle of a sword, ready to push it down at any moment to end her life.

In silence, countless emotions seemed to be expressed, without the need for words as time was running out.

Longque forced out a smile uglier than crying.

Then, a hand lifted up, sharp fingertips digging into flesh and bone, piercing through the figure bending down, leaving a sudden void in the chest.

Bai Wei was stunned for a moment, then his eyes overflowed with a lot of bright red, his appearance twisted, a fierce black aura erupted like a volcano, and then sharply receded, trying to fill the gap, but sadly had no chance, and was powerless. His expression was extremely fierce as he forcefully pushed the sword down, piercing Longque’s chest, but she contracted her muscles, her ribs also closed around the blade, preventing it from crushing her insides.

She embraced him with force, though both were desperately trying to kill each other. At the last moment, they hugged as closely as family, knowing they were about to part, so they held on tightly, unwilling to let go.

Bai Wei let go of his hand first, or rather, the dark aura collapsed first. It gave up, wanting to escape, but had nowhere to run, only able to scream and roar frantically, finally weak and dying, lingering on the empty left side of Bai Wei’s chest, leaving behind a broken black spiderweb.

Only the flow of Long’s energy was fading.

Unavoidable death is approaching.

Bai Wei’s arms hung limply, his head lowered, his chin gently resting on Longque’s forehead, who was hugging him tightly.

Despite being so close, they couldn’t see each other’s faces clearly, unable to see each other’s expressions.

The rain was stopping, dawn was approaching, but time would not pause and wait, nor would it rush to come.

"Such a pity."

With his last words, the light in his eyes quickly went out.

A common man finished the journey of his life, dying before dawn.

Longque cried hoarsely, "Deceiver…"
