Chapter 422: If Your Sister and Girlfriend Swap Souls
“You’re being a bit outrageous,” Bai Wei said, regaining his composure. His tone was calm but carried an undertone of sharpness. “Why would kissing break the soul exchange? Are you the evil witch who cursed Snow White?”
The calico cat, Yumeko, wagged its tail playfully, a smug glint in its eyes. “I can’t explain it in normal terms, but I won’t lie to you. We’re partners, after all.”
Bai Wei’s gaze locked onto Yumeko, his expression unreadable. He studied it with a calm intensity that made the little demon visibly uncomfortable.
Yumeko stuck out its tiny tongue, attempting to appear nonchalant. “What benefit would I get from lying to you? And what could I possibly gain from kissing you?”
Bai Wei frowned. “Exactly because there’s no apparent benefit to you, I don’t understand your intentions. Aside from disrupting my relationships, what’s your goal here? Just mischief? Am I supposed to endlessly tolerate your antics, letting you toy with the people around me for your own amusement?”
He let out a long sigh, his patience wearing thin. “Enough. Tonight, you’ll switch them back.”
The demon cat stretched lazily, as if Bai Wei’s demand was no more than a passing breeze. “You seem to have misunderstood something. I’m not your subordinate. I have no obligation to follow your commands. Even if you suppressed this little lynx body of mine, it wouldn’t affect me much.”
Bai Wei’s expression darkened. “It seems like you’re willing to lose me as a partner. If you can’t even show sincerity in this, we’re done. I only work with trustworthy allies, and clearly, you’re not one of them.”
Without waiting for a response, he turned his back on the demon cat and headed toward the bright lights in the distance. He needed to find a map to plan his journey to the Ten Thousand Demon Kingdom.
Behind him, Yumeko let out a cold chuckle. “I only wanted to fulfill their deepest desires. What’s so wrong with that?”
Bai Wei stopped in his tracks. “Are you really as kind-hearted as you claim?”
“Kind-hearted?” Yumeko licked its paw, its tone mocking. “Why don’t you ask yourself that question?”
Bai Wei turned his head slightly. “What do I have to ask myself about?”
The cat’s voice lowered, becoming almost gentle. “You know what they’re feeling, don’t you? You’ve seen it.”
Bai Wei clenched his fists but said nothing. Seeing was one thing; knowing how to respond was another.
“This has nothing to do with you,” he said finally, his voice firm.
Yumeko ignored him, continuing as if he hadn’t spoken. “Why won’t you respond to them?”
He scoffed, the corner of his mouth lifting in a bitter smirk. “I never thought I’d be discussing this kind of issue with a cat. Are you actually interested in this, or are you just being ridiculous?”
The demon cat stopped, its tail swaying slightly as it turned to look at him. Its fanged grin stretched unnaturally wide. “I just can’t stand it,” it said softly.
“Can’t stand what?”
“You,” Yumeko hissed, “standing there, pretending not to care. Pretending you don’t see it.”
Bai Wei narrowed his eyes. “And what, exactly, do you think you know about me? You’re just a cat playing a game of manipulation. What gives you the right to judge me?”
Yumeko didn’t answer immediately. Instead, it jumped down from the railing and padded ahead, its small steps filled with irritation.
“Whether it’s Guan Ling or Simozi, they’re both young,” Bai Wei said, breaking the silence. “They’re not even twenty yet. How much can they truly understand about their futures? Most of the emotions they feel now are impulsive, fleeting. It’s my responsibility to ensure their safety, not to indulge their whims.”
The cat stopped in its tracks and glanced back at him. “Do you think they want to hear your excuses? That they’ll just accept being ignored because you think it’s for their own good?”
Bai Wei sighed heavily, his voice softening. “They’ll understand when they grow up. Everyone does, eventually.”
Yumeko’s sharp laughter pierced the night air. “Arrogant, aren’t you? You think you’re the wise guardian, above it all. But in the end, you’re just running away. Do you even know what they dream about when they sleep?”
“…No,” Bai Wei admitted after a long pause.
“Love,” Yumeko said simply. “They dream of love. Of you.”
Bai Wei’s jaw tightened, but he said nothing.
“All their flaws, their
insecurities, they all stem from
wanting to be closer to you,
” the demon cat continued.
“Guan Ling envies Simozi’s
confidence, while Simozi feels
inadequate in her own skin.
And you? You stand there,
detached, pretending it doesn’t
matter.”
Bai Wei’s voice was low,
almost a whisper. “And what
would you have me do?”
“Choose,” Yumeko said, its
eyes gleaming in the
moonlight. “Decide who you’ll
save, who you’ll trust. Because
one kiss will bring them back,
but you can’t save them both
at once.”
Bai Wei stared out at the sea,
the waves crashing against the
shore, their sound drowning
out the chaos in his mind.
For once, he felt utterly
powerless.
