Chapter 402: Match Between Lighter and Dynamite
At first, Guan Ling didn’t want to wake up from her dream in paradise.
She didn’t have much willpower to break free, either.
In her dream, she returned to the happiest days of her life—before she turned ten. Back when her father hadn’t been replaced by something secretive. Those were the best days she could remember. She fantasized endlessly about what her life could’ve been if her family had stayed intact.
And so, heaven granted her the perfect dream. She became ten again.
But there was a problem. Ten-year-old Guan Ling couldn’t find Bai Wei in Yingzhou. Even Yagyū Simozi hadn’t yet experienced any family upheaval.
For the first few days, she maintained her habits, but by the third week, her restlessness grew. She ran away from home, wandering until she stumbled upon Yagyū Mansion. The moment she pushed the door open, she woke up.
Now inhabiting Yagyū Simozi’s body, Guan Ling was lost. She had no idea how to operate the “Gundam” she’d found, nor could she read the manual. Her only saving grace was meeting someone more reliable nearby: Alena Capesh.
Alena had also been trapped in a dream but broke free quickly. Her escape was rooted in her disbelief—she had no interest in reliving her troubled childhood. While her upbringing was far from ideal, Alena found fulfillment in her present life. She didn’t yearn for an illusory paradise.
Her dream had been simple. She attended school, practiced with Michelle, and accidentally defeated her during training—an outcome too absurd to be true. Enraged, Alena shattered the false world, destroying the dream entirely.
In the dream world, most people yearn to be heroes. They dream of invincible strength, perfect victories, and endless fortune.
But not Alena. She despised unrealistic fantasies. Her realism led her to break free—and straight into a confrontation with the residue of an outer god.
The residue proposed a game.
“If you can make me laugh, I’ll let you leave and give you something valuable,” it said.
Alena, unimpressed, asked, “What kind of game is this?”
But the rules were set. She had to tell a joke.
Alena frowned. Humor wasn’t her strong suit. Even as a child, she’d been the “straight man” in every comedic scenario. Once, during a school event, her classmates performed a comedy skit. Despite their best efforts, her expressionless reaction killed the performance.
When it was her turn, she dimmed the lights, lit a candle, and told a terrifying story. The next day, her classmates came to school with dark circles under their eyes, haunted by her chilling words: “Based on a true story.”
Now, faced with the outer god residue, Alena struggled. After three minutes of silence, she finally spoke.
“Here’s one: A group of cannibals captures two people—an old government official and a young, healthy man. The leader spares the young man. Why?”
The residue guessed, “Because they prefer older meat?”
“No,” Alena deadpanned. “Because the young man was too bitter.”
Raising her blood-infused ice sword, she growled, “Laugh. Now.”
The residue chuckled reluctantly. “Fine. You win.”
True to its word, it handed her
an incomplete map of Broken
Paradise before vanishing.
Alena turned to leave but
stopped when she heard a
voice.
“Miss, tell me a demon story! If
you get it right, I’ll let you go
and give you something nice.”
The residue had attached itself
to someone new—a girl who
looked lost and bewildered.
“Don’t listen to it!” Alena
shouted.
The girl hesitated. “I… I don’t
understand…”
“Yingzhou?” Alena asked.
The girl shook her head. “I’m
from Yingzhou… but I know a
little Ming language. I taught
myself.”
Alena groaned. “Great. Just
great.”
The residue chimed in. “I have
a pair of tools that allow
telepathic communication.
They’re a bit broken but still
functional. If this girl tells me
a story that scares or moves
me, I’ll give them to her. What
do you say?”
Alena clenched her fists. This
was going to be a long day.
