Chapter 400: This Is a Lie
“Choose one, and one can live well.”
“Choose two, still haven’t found a soulmate.”
“Choose three, too busy, too poor, too many disadvantages.”
“Choose four, all of the above.”
Bai Wei rubbed his chin thoughtfully. He hadn’t expected the angel sculpture to present him with a multiple-choice question.
From his perspective, he really wanted to roll up his sleeves and fight it out. Winning or losing didn’t matter; he just couldn’t stomach such humiliation.
“What, what did it say?” Hatsurai Wagaizuma asked curiously. “What’s your question?”
Bai Wei glanced at her. “You didn’t hear it?”
Hatsurai Wagaizuma shook her head. “No, I didn’t.”
Bai Wei exhaled in relief. Good. If anyone else had heard, things might have gotten messy.
“So, what is it?” she pressed.
“I’ll answer, but only if you tell me your question in return,” Bai Wei said.
She nodded. “One question for another. I have nothing to hide.”
Bai Wei quickly made up a question. “What’s my favorite food?”
Before Hatsurai Wagaizuma could respond, the angel sculpture glowed red, and a solemn voice echoed:
“This is a lie!”
Bai Wei froze. His neck stiffly turned toward the statue. “This isn’t within your trial scope—why do you care?”
The sculpture’s eyes glimmered with an unwavering red light. “This is a test of honesty. Everyone must be accountable for their words and promises!”
Bai Wei pressed his forehead with one hand, exasperated. “You really love meddling, don’t you? How about we skip the trial and go straight to a fight?”
“Answer the question!” the sculpture boomed, ignoring his deflection.
Hatsurai Wagaizuma laughed softly. “Mr. Bai, just tell me already—I’m curious!”
Bai Wei sighed, muttering under his breath. “Fine… The question was, why I’ve been single until now.”
Her eyes sparkled with interest. “Oh? And your answer?”
Reluctantly, he replied, “Option four: all of the above.”
The sculpture’s red glow dimmed as it solemnly declared:
“This answer is honest.”
It then turned to Hatsurai Wagaizuma. “Now, it is your turn to answer. Your question is…”
The voice abruptly cut off. Bai Wei couldn’t hear the question, but the look on Hatsurai Wagaizuma’s face said it all—her expression was akin to someone whose embarrassing secrets had just been aired in public.
Half a minute passed in silence before Bai Wei asked, “What was your question?”
Fidgeting with her fingers, she hesitated before muttering, “Can we pick another question?”
Bai Wei shrugged. “You might as well answer. What if the next one is worse?”
After a moment of deliberation, she sighed and admitted, “The question was… what was my highest weight before I turned ten?”
“And?”
“…One hundred and thirty,” she whispered, blushing furiously.
Bai Wei was stunned. “At what age?”
“Eight,” she confessed.
“…How?”
“It’s a long story,” she deflected. “Anyway, I’m fine now! I can eat whatever I want without gaining weight.”
“Then there’s definitely something wrong with your metabolism,” Bai Wei teased. “I suggest seeing a gastroenterologist.”
“No way! I was just a weak child back then,” she said defensively. “But look at me now—I’m in perfect shape!”
She gave him a smug smile, as if to emphasize her transformation.
Bai Wei wisely decided to drop the topic.
The angel sculpture confirmed her honesty and moved on. “Second question. Bai Wei, who is your greatest enemy?”
“Option one: the Fairy Family of White Jade.
Option two: a very evil god from another world.
Option three: the Ruler of the Yellow Spring.
Option four: the Holy Religion.
Option five: none of the above.”
After a pause, Bai Wei answered, “Option five: none of the above.”
The sculpture pressed further. “Then who or what is it?”
Bai Wei hesitated but eventually admitted, “Death.”
The angel sculpture acknowledged his honesty and moved to Hatsurai Wagaizuma.
“Your second question: Why did you leave everything behind to start anew?
Option one: on a whim, seeking fun in the world.
Option two: out of boredom and dissatisfaction with life.
Option three: self-exile, going with the flow.
Option four: a moment of clarity, a desire to sing freely.”
She looked at the statue and said softly, “Option four.”
The sculpture posed another question: “What if one day you regret your choice? What if your actions bring you close to death? Have you considered the expectations of your family and friends?”
Without hesitation, she replied, “I don’t need to burden myself with those responsibilities. I choose how to live my life. I’m happier now than I was before. At least I can sing, not just stand as a decoration on a shelf.”
The sculpture agreed. “You are honest.”
Finally, the angel declared, “The last question is for both of you. What is your greatest wish for the future?”
Bai Wei answered immediately. “To marry eight wives.”
Hatsurai Wagaizuma nearly choked. “Eight?!”
“It would be ideal if they were octuplets,” he added nonchalantly.
“That’s absurd! Do you think life is some kind of comedy?”
“It’s a wish, not a guarantee,” Bai Wei argued.
The angel sculpture affirmed his honesty, turning to Hatsurai Wagaizuma.
After a deep breath, she declared, “My dream is to sing on stages around the world, with countless fans listening to my voice.”
The angel responded, “You are honest, but only halfway.”
Hatsurai Wagaizuma frowned. “What else could there be?”
The angel remained silent, and two pure white feathers floated down.
“The test is complete. As a reward, you may each ask me one question.”
Bai Wei didn’t hesitate. “Where is my future wife?”
The angel replied, “You have already met one. She is on your left.”
Bai Wei turned, his gaze shifting between Hatsurai Wagaizuma and his own left hand.
“…Seriously?”
