Chapter 372: Yumeko
The phone call ended, and Yun Wuxin and Xue Hanlei, who had planned to enjoy their dinner together, found themselves simultaneously losing their appetite.
The immortals, as cold as the snow on Changbai Mountain, remained as emotionally distant as ever, no matter how much the temperature dropped.
Xue Hanlei’s reaction was filled with a sense of unpredictability.
“Hmm, seems like Yingzhou’s girl really likes him,” Xue Hanlei mused. “I thought he was just a commoner, but it turns out he’s taken over an entire fish pond.”
“It shouldn’t be that exaggerated,” Yun Wuxin speculated. “Maybe there’s nowhere else to hide, that’s why he ended up at the sword witch’s dormitory.”
“But it proves that he’s getting too close to the sword witch,” Xue Hanlei’s mood shifted, her expression showing clear displeasure.
“Even so, why are you in such a rush?” Yun Wuxin asked, not understanding.
“I was still counting on him to be my brother-in-law, but now that short-legged woman from Yingzhou has taken him. Can I not be in a hurry?” Xue Hanlei sighed, realizing she couldn’t voice this in front of Yun Wuxin. “I’m just standing up for you.”
“I don’t think so,” Yun Wuxin replied, skeptical. “It’s not so easy to deceive fairies.”
“My good friend, don’t you believe me? I feel really sad,” Xue Hanlei pouted.
“Every time you feel guilty, your excuses grow more exaggerated. The more you act, the more insincere it seems,” Yun Wuxin said calmly. “You clearly care more about him than just as a business partner, but you haven’t taken any further action. So, what are you really thinking?”
Xue Hanlei rested her chin on her hands, silent, not offering an answer.
“Is there any point in me telling you all this? Don’t forget, the young master is still in the land of affection,” she eventually said.
Yun Wuxin responded, “He called you; there’s nothing I can do about it.”
Xue Hanlei laughed. “Are you jealous?”
“No.”
“If you say you are, maybe I can help you teach him a lesson.”
“I’m not that bored,” Yun Wuxin frowned. “I’m just very curious why the Shogunate is involved in this. The impact is too big. The Four Seas Group’s logistics system is crucial for Yingzhou. But once it involves the Shogunate, even you should think carefully.”
“I’m just a weak woman now. Don’t expect me to do anything earth-shattering,” Xue Hanlei smiled lightly. “I’m just cooperating with him. I won’t take the initiative to do anything. Since he said goodbye until tomorrow, let’s wait until then. Do you want my staff to snatch him out of the dormitory? I’m not that bored. And Bai Wei… isn’t worth it.”
“Not worth it? Such a high price?” Yun Wuxin questioned.
“It’s not worth worrying about him,” Xue Hanlei said, stirring the ice cubes in her glass, the tinkling sound filling the air. “Whenever he shows up, it’s like a bloody storm follows.”
“I think you’re mistaken,” Yun Wuxin argued. “It’s not that he brings the bloody storm; it’s quite the opposite.”
“But he’s always in the eye of the storm. It doesn’t make a difference to me. It’s more trouble to worry about a man who’s always seeking out challenges. I’d rather enjoy my own life,” Xue Hanlei smiled. “Cheers.”
The dragon maiden lifted her cup and clinked it. “Cheers!”
Yun Wuxin nodded, took a small sip of her drink, and a faint blush appeared on her fair cheeks, though it quickly faded.
“Drinking like this, you can’t taste the flavor,” Xue Hanlei remarked.
“I get drunk easily.”
“She can’t tolerate alcohol. Without control, she easily gets drunk.”
“So you rarely drink?” Xue Hanlei shook her head. “That’s a shame. Drinking is one of life’s pleasures. But I’m curious, how did you find out you get drunk easily?”
“That’s in the past,” Yun Wuxin replied, her eyes closing slightly as memories flooded back—memories of walking alone on a bustling street, standing in the cold rain, soaked to the bone, feeling utterly hopeless.
The feeling from that time lingered, so she tilted her head back and took another sip of alcohol.
“…Drink less,” Xue Hanlei said, sensing unease as she watched Yun Wuxin. A person who doesn’t drink suddenly drinking heavily was never a good sign.
“Another glass, please,” Yun Wuxin requested expressionlessly. “Refill my glass.”
Tonight might be a night of ‘drinking till one is tired, not returning until drunk.’
It was late at night.
Bai Wei lay on his bed as the kind witches helped him tidy up the room and make the bed.
If he weren’t so shy and if they had known each other longer, perhaps a few bolder ones might have wanted to play a night attack or even keep him company while he slept.
He said he was thankful for the tea from the afternoon, but truthfully, his curiosity was what lingered the most.
Bai Wei didn’t feel guilty about it either.
He stared at the ceiling. In this situation, it wasn’t really ideal to go to Europa, but should he find Kokonohana Nori instead?
Saying that could reveal his identity too easily. It was best not to give her any reason to believe there was a connection between Bai Wei and the Emperor.
As time passed and it grew later, sleepiness began to take over. He closed his eyes and drifted into a light slumber.
Half an hour later, Bai Wei, breathing evenly, was deep in sleep when a cat suddenly jumped down from the windowsill.
The three-colored cat slid through the gap in the window and looked at the person under the blanket. It then showed a dangerous expression, like a hunter preparing to pounce.
The cat approached and extended its paw, ready to strike.
Paw…
The three-colored cat glanced at its paw… where was it?
It was nearly impossible to find, as it had just been trimmed.
This was a house cat.
Even without its paw, it still took on the pose of an assassin. But just as it leapt, its body froze in mid-air.
In the dark room, echoes filled the air as Bai Wei’s semi-transparent soul emerged, carrying the cat with one hand.
“I thought it was an assassin, but it’s just you…” Bai Wei said, not at all startled.
The three-colored cat licked its paw, attempting to appear cute.
“Stop pretending, I recognize you,” Bai Wei sneered dismissively. “You must be a member of the Hundred Demons Party. You’re the one who exchanged the souls of White Snake God and Hokusinn Kichyō. You even tried to exchange my soul, but failed…”
The three-colored cat lowered its paw and stared at Bai Wei.
“I can’t believe you recognized me. Didn’t I do a good job pretending?” it said, its voice tinged with admiration.
“You did a good job, but cats are always insecure around large animals,” Bai Wei replied. “And since I’ve seen you once, I have a way to remember you.”
“Impressive,” the cat remarked. “Now, can you let me down?”
“That won’t do,” Bai Wei said firmly.
“I came here to deliver a message, and this is how you treat me?” the cat asked, exasperated.
“I can’t trust you,” Bai Wei replied coldly. “We’re enemies.”
“We may be enemies, but sometimes we can become allies. In the current situation, you need my help,” the cat insisted, licking its paw once more. “I’m sure you don’t know much about the surroundings, but we do. I do.”
Bai Wei remained noncommittal.
“How about it? Interested?”
“It’s okay, go on.”
“Put me down first!” the cat exclaimed, fur standing on end. “Don’t you know that cats feel insecure when their limbs dangle?”
“I know, that’s why I’m interrogating you,” Bai Wei responded, expressionless.
“You’re not sincere enough, let me go!”
“You can’t leave,” Bai Wei said firmly. “Spill everything you know.”
The three-colored cat appeared dejected. “You’re so unreasonable. You Ming Country people don’t know anything about courtesy and respect!”
“That’s right, I’m a man who idolizes Confucius,” Bai Wei quipped. He tapped the cat’s head before leaning back against the desk and placing it on his lap, pinching its little face. “Now, tell me what information you brought… But first, introduce yourself.”
“I am Yumeko, the Demon Cat Yumeko,” the cat replied.
“And what is your relationship with the Lord of Yellow Spring?”
“I made a pact with it… No, that’s not what I wanted to say,” Yumeko realized, waving her tiny paws.
Bai Wei held the kitten’s face firmly. “I’m a spirit, not afraid of your scratches, immune to physical attacks… Since the Lord of Yellow Spring is now your creditor, I suppose it allowed you to come this time as well.”
“Sort of,” Yumeko glared at Bai Wei. “Though you ruined our plans many times, and we were originally destined for a never-ending fight, we were also determined to conquer Yingzhou. But now the situation has changed. Dealing with the evil gods from the outer realms is another matter. We can’t let them in.”
“So they are indeed evil gods,” Bai Wei asked. “But why are they targeting me? What’s their connection to me?”
“How would I know, meow,” Yumeko said, her big eyes wide. “I just came to tell you that the evil gods are causing a large-scale disturbance.”
“Even the government is involved, so it must be significant,” Bai Wei commented, neither confirming nor denying. “But that’s stating the obvious.”
“Is that so?” Yumeko continued. “But what if I tell you the target of the evil gods is to seize Hokkaido?”
“What did you say?” Bai Wei’s eyes instantly turned cold… His sister, Simozi, had gone to Hokkaido and still hadn’t returned!
