Chapter 360: Different Paths for Humans and Demons
At the foot of Kunlun Mountain,
the Fox Fairy and the White Snake met again.
Bai Suzhen stared at the young girl whose hair had turned white overnight.
Diwu Qiansui looked at the sad woman with a troubled expression.
They both understood each other without needing words.
The Fox Fairy, still young and unrefined in her cultivation, had to drink the blood of her beloved to remain in the human world. Other people’s blood was useless to her. The more she longed to be with her loved one, the shorter her lifespan became.
Bai Suzhen, though having lived for 1800 years and possessing sufficient cultivation, had always hidden her true identity as a demon. On the day of giving birth, she finally transformed, terrifying Xu Xian, who rushed in to find her, to death.
Their choices were unspoken but unanimous, as if destined.
How could they endure such a separation so easily? That was why they had come to Kunlun Mountain, disregarding the order, seeking to steal the elixir from Yaochi in Kunlun to save the lives of their loved ones.
Diwu Qiansui, her white hair like snow, spoke softly, “This is what humans are like… so fragile.”
Bai Suzhen bit her lip, her gentle smile still carrying the strength of resolve.
“Perhaps I should have foreseen this day, but I never imagined it would come so soon. No matter what, I must retrieve the elixir.”
Though the story of humans and demons may always end in tragedy, they still longed to extend their beautiful dream a little longer. Even though these few short years in their long lives only accounted for a fraction, they felt as heavy as their entire past.
They climbed up Kunlun Mountain.
Kunlun Mountain, Yaochi
The elixir lay just ahead of them, but it was out of reach.
The Queen Mother of the West, ruler of Kunlun, sat in the Jade Pool, facing them.
“Humans and demons follow different paths, and you have done enough foolish things.”
“You, an immortal fox, drinking human blood, eating human flesh, wasting the lives of others, and ruining your own cultivation.”
“And you, after cultivating for 1800 years, what did your master, Lishan, teach you? To marry and have children in the mortal world, and still dare to come to the Jade Pool to steal from me…”
“Do you think I’m just a sick cat?”
A sharp roar, like a tiger’s, pierced through the Jade Pool. The golden lotus flowers within it closed tightly, and the overwhelming presence caused the two women’s faces to pale.
“Enough!” the Queen Mother of the West scolded, unable to look at them any longer.
“They’ve gone mad… over a mortal man.”
She gazed at the two young women, disappointment evident in her expression.
Bai Suzhen and Diwu Qiansui stared back, unyielding in their resolve.
“Fine,” the Queen Mother of the West finally said, “As an exception, I permit you to take two lotus seeds from the Jade Pool’s Golden Lotus…”
Two lotus seeds flew from the Jade Pool and landed before them.
“Thank you, Queen Mother,” Bai Suzhen and Diwu Qiansui said in unison.
“While I haven’t changed my mind, go as far away as possible!” the Queen Mother exclaimed, waving her sleeve dismissively.
Bai Suzhen returned to the Xu family’s clinic, her face weathered by the winds of time, but Xu Xian was nowhere to be found.
“Where is my husband?”
“He has been taken to Golden Mount Temple by Fa Hai,” the apprentice said, hesitating before continuing, “and Young Master Bai was taken with him.”
Outside Golden Mount Temple,
a young monk blocked their way.
“The abbot has said, you two cannot enter. This is a sacred place for Buddhists; no demons are allowed inside.”
“But my husband is inside!” Bai Suzhen cried desperately.
The monk repeated, “Medicine can enter, but demons cannot.”
“Fa Hai is a Buddhist warrior with a relic on him; the lotus can be of great use to him,” Diwu Qiansui stepped back, raising her hands and pleading, “Monk, you must save him!”
A solemn voice echoed from the Buddhist hall, “I will do my utmost.”
A golden lotus seed flew to the top of the pagoda and entered Xu Xian’s body, awakening the doctor, who had been terrified.
“Is this Golden Mount Temple?” Xu Xian sat up weakly and looked at Fa Hai. “Monk, did you save me?”
“It’s not just me,” Fa Hai answered. “It’s the golden lotus seed brought back by Bai Suzhen.”
“My wife… oh, my wife!” Xu Xian quickly got up.
“Where are you going?” Fa Hai asked sternly.
“My child is underground, and my wife…” Xu Xian said urgently.
“Xu Xian!” Fa Hai’s voice grew serious. “Your wife is a thousand-year-old snake demon! You were scared to death by her!”
Xu Xian, having been a doctor for many years, nodded. “I know… I’m not stupid. I remember.”
“Are you still going back?” Fa Hai’s tone hardened.
“It’s not her fault. She told me not to go in, but I didn’t listen. You know, monk, for many years she has been using her powers to heal people, just like me.” Xu Xian spoke of his wife’s kindness, “She is a supernatural being, but definitely not an evil one.”
Fa Hai replied, “But she still caused your death once.” His voice was deep and solemn, with a touch of pain. “Bai Wei was the same… all of you will be killed by the fairies.”
It was only then that Xu Xian noticed someone else lying on the bed.
He looked at the frail figure and gasped, his eyes widening in shock. “This… how can this be!”
“Diwu Qiansui,” Fa Hai murmured, his eyes flashing with Buddhist light. “Who else could it be? With her weak powers, she must constantly absorb life to maintain her human form. Originally, devouring thousands would not surprise anyone. I should have killed her long ago. It was my persistence that made a mistake.”
Fa Hai, the head of Golden Mount Temple, spoke with a voice like thunder. “Humans and demons are destined to follow different paths. If you stay together, you will eventually be killed by them!”
Xu Xian shook his head, insisting, “It’s different. My wife and Miss Diwu are different!”
Fa Hai’s face filled with sorrow. “You still don’t understand.”
“Monk,” Xu Xian pleaded, wanting to reason with him. He could see that Fa Hai was overwhelmed with grief upon seeing Bai Wei in such a state.
Fa Hai placed his hands together, interrupting Xu Xian’s words. There was a flicker of regret and sadness in his eyes. “I don’t want to lose both of you as friends… I’m sorry. Until you understand, I won’t let you leave Golden Mount Temple, and they won’t be allowed to enter either.”
Xu Xian was locked in another level of the pagoda.
Fa Hai stood silently, watching the unconscious young man, and murmured to himself,
“Old friend, even if you are willing, I still feel unwilling.”
“Since I care about both of you, how can I pretend that worldly desires are empty words?”
“I am a monk and don’t understand the trivial matters of the world. But I feel that having enough to eat, being well-dressed, and living well are more important than anything else.”
“That demon woman feeding on you is wrong.”
“It’s not that you owe her anything; it’s that she is not worthy of you.”
“Bai Suzhen trained for a thousand years. She respected the monk, and the monk respected her. But Bai Suzhen feels guilty for turning a blind eye all these years. She hopes she can leave on her own.”
“But Diwu Qiansui, she is not worthy! She is too young and naive. She is selfish and always wants more. Can love be more important than life?”
“If you die, you lose everything!”
“In this life, I will not seek enlightenment in the next. Whether it’s right or wrong, I will accept my mistakes!”
Fa Hai stood at the top of the Golden Mount Temple pagoda, looking out over the sea of clouds. Dark clouds loomed ominously, threatening to destroy the city.
Even as the evil energy increased, the Buddhist guardian remained calm, a faint smile playing on his lips.
“I, the monk, am not afraid of you!”
“Do not see me as an ordinary human. The compassion of Buddha will not allow this evil creature to rampage!”
At the Foot of the Mountain
“Today, they won’t return. Let’s go back,” said Little Green.
But Bai Suzhen remained silent, still gazing at the gate of Golden Mount Temple.
Diwu Qiansui also remained silent, standing still, her short hair not yet grown, holding a jade hairpin in her hands and lost in thought.
Little Green suddenly shivered, a bad feeling creeping over her.
A sense of foreboding filled the air.
