Chapter 339: Full of Curiosity
Sasha’s visit today was a rather remarkable coincidence.
As a bloodline ruler, she had numerous daily affairs demanding her attention. It was impossible for her to constantly monitor Michelle’s whereabouts, just as an author who writes thousands of words daily cannot keep an eye on a chat group 24/7.
After several reviews and surprise inspections at Tulip Academy, all confirming Michelle’s satisfactory progress, Sasha was temporarily relieved of her worries.
In matters of the soul, she was neither an expert nor skilled in interrogation. It would be a waste for the leader of an assassin guild—who thrived in battle—to engage in such tasks. Intelligence work was not her responsibility; she had long moved on since the rise of the secret agent organization.
However, this coincidence led her to witness something unexpected. While passing by the library to research some old-timey information, she heard a voice murmuring excitedly inside.
Upon focusing her senses, she realized that there was only one person inside, talking to themselves.
The person’s name was Michelle.
Sasha casually pushed open the door, peering through a bookshelf at Michelle, and asked, “Who were you just talking to?”
Had it been anyone else, Michelle might have brushed it off, but this person was different.
Her face, if not for recent practice in toughening her skin, would have turned pale. She opened her mouth, fumbling for an explanation, feeling helpless and embarrassed as she nervously scratched her cheek.
“I was talking with…”
“I don’t believe in things like ‘air friends.’ The tone variation you used when speaking to yourself was too natural. When someone imagines speaking to others, their tone can’t change so fluidly.”
Sasha’s eyes narrowed like a predator fixated on its prey. “Don’t tell me it was a phone or something. There are no phones here.”
Michelle hurriedly reassured her, “You’re overthinking it. There’s no one else here.”
Sasha wasn’t about to translate Michelle’s words for her. She took on a more storybook tone instead.
“This room really doesn’t have anyone else,” Sasha said. “So… it’s hard to say if you’re being possessed right now.”
She snapped her fingers. “I can call the professors from the Mind and Spirit departments right now to examine you.”
Taking a formidable step forward, Sasha applied psychological pressure. “Or, should I say, will you confess?”
Michelle’s heart crumbled.
Bai Wei stood by, silently observing, which served as a good exercise for Michelle’s state of mind.
This was Michelle’s own mistake—her carelessness had allowed Sasha to notice the flaw. She could only blame herself for this oversight.
Sasha was one of Michelle’s disciples, a true successor. Their bond was deep, perhaps even stronger than Michelle’s own. It would have been wiser for her to choose a different path, to not aid her.
As for losing a disguise…
On one hand, Bai Wei, inheriting the throne with dignity, remained calm and composed. On the other hand, Sasha wasn’t clever enough to extract secrets from Michelle’s own mouth just yet.
Even when communicating through the online alias “Mr. Devil,” it hadn’t been easy for Sasha to uncover Michelle’s true identity.
If her intuition was truly sharp, she should have seen the game between teacher and student for what it was. There was no need for her to become so upset over a little loss.
Whether or not she could keep Michelle’s secret depended entirely on Michelle herself, as Judy had noted.
Sasha casually remarked, “I’ll give you half a minute to think. Take your time and consider how you’ll confess.”
Michelle sighed and said, “No need. I confess.”
Sasha nodded, approving of the choice. “A wise decision. Now, tell me, what spirit is possessing your body?”
Michelle pointed at the windowsill. “I was talking to it.”
A sleek black cat lay there, basking in the sun. It let out a gentle “meow” as it stretched and yawned.
Sasha’s eyelid twitched. “Do you think I’m a fool?”
“Is it true?” Michelle asked. “Ask it not to disturb me while I study.”
“Meow.” The black cat jumped onto the table, nuzzling Michelle’s arm affectionately.
Sasha glanced at Michelle, doubting her own instincts. Had she been overthinking it?
“…You’ve passed this time.” Sasha glanced at the clock, turned, and walked toward the door. Before leaving, she added, “But be more careful next time. There won’t be a cat to save you.”
The sound of Sasha’s footsteps gradually faded.
Michelle let out a sigh of relief and picked up the black cat. “Thanks for your help. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have been able to explain myself.”
“Don’t mention it,” the black cat replied in a cold tone.
“?!?” Michelle gasped in surprise, instinctively loosening her grip.
The black cat jumped onto the table, then—just as it touched the ground—transformed into a graceful figure.
Judy Selvicer shook her hair and stretched. “It’s been a while since I practiced my shape-shifting magic. My bones feel stiff.”
Michelle stood frozen in disbelief. She couldn’t process what she was seeing. “Y-you… why aren’t you wearing any clothes?”
“Have you ever seen a cat in clothes?”
“Then don’t change back! There’s…,” Michelle thought silently, Don’t look!
Bai Wei politely averted his gaze.
Though it was a bit late now, it was clear Judy had intentionally transformed back. She wasn’t shy; she knew exactly who was there.
“What are girls afraid of? Haven’t you been to a public bathhouse before?” Judy teased, then added, “Go pick up my clothes for me. They’re in the bushes. I was too busy trying to help you to think about them.”
“I’ll go right away!” Michelle said, opening the window and preparing to jump.
This place was on the seventh floor.
Bai Wei sighed.
Judy could have stayed in her transformed state and simply put on her clothes after getting downstairs, but she had deliberately changed back. She wanted to show off her figure while also getting Michelle to fetch her clothes. Having helped Michelle earlier, Michelle felt obliged, and it didn’t feel right to leave Judy undressed. So, without hesitation, she jumped.
This gave Judy time alone with Bai Wei in the library.
The movements flowed smoothly, like water.
“You have such a clever mind,” Bai Wei mused, mimicking the sound of his own voice to create ripples in the air.
“I’ll take that as a compliment,” Judy replied confidently. She didn’t bother hiding her body and turned toward the direction where the sound came from.
“I’ve closed my eyes. Could you cover them, please?” Bai Wei asked.
Judy shot back, “If you’ve closed your eyes, why would I need to cover them?”
“…That makes sense,” Bai Wei admitted. “In that case, I won’t.”
“Judy, you can take a look if you want. You can even write it down and bring it back to make a dish,” she added.
Bai Wei raised an eyebrow. “Do you have something to tell me? Resorting to shape-shifting, is this a spell of your own creation?”
Judy smiled. “This was passed down by the Selvicer family. It’s thanks to this magic that we’ve survived since the Imperial era. But it’s limited to transforming into ordinary animals. It’s not very practical for our needs.”
She continued, “But my body is genuine, no shape-shifting involved. If you don’t believe me, you can take a look.”
“I’ve looked,” Bai Wei replied dismissively. “Is that all you’re proud of?”
“This isn’t a special treat for you?” Judy quipped, then, with a hint of resentment, added, “Only two weeks’ worth!”
Bai Wei, “…”
Michelle was easy to please, but this one was not. Judy had a face that clearly said, I’ll remember this.
Hearing Michelle return, Judy stopped and lightly tapped a beat on the floor.
The young girl said solemnly, “You must come tomorrow.”
One day, I will be drained of my soul power in my dreams by all of you.
During the day, I work and support my family.
And I still find time to entertain international friends in Yingzhou. Am I really that idle?
Bai Wei suddenly felt a strong sense of middle-aged crisis, as if after a long day’s work, he came home only to be obliged to pay homage to his charming, silky-eyed wife—who wasn’t his only wife.
In an instant, numerous thoughts converged into a simple phrase.
“…Good.”
Michelle hopped through the window and stuffed the clothes into Judy’s hands. Seeing her hesitate, Michelle hurriedly helped her put them on, then pushed her out, ensuring no one saw her.
After Judy left, Michelle remembered something important. “Wait, why did she help me? Did she overhear our conversation? She was downstairs. How did she hear?”
Judy Selvicer had been leaning against the windowsill of the next room, flipping through a book, listening all along. When the time was right, she transformed into a cat, rolling the clothes into a ball and dropping them out the window.
Bai Wei, now fully aware of everything, glanced at Michelle, who was still clueless. He gently touched her head, smoothing out her barely noticeable messy hair.
“The world is full of uncertainties, and people can be complicated… Be a little more cautious,” he advised.
Michelle asked, “How does it grow?”
Bai Wei replied, “Go next door and borrow some.”
