Chapter 7: Senior Brother, Please Wait in Line
“Isn’t it just mining? Is it really that serious?”
Ji Yang, puzzled, took the book Wang He handed him and looked at it with curiosity.
“Rules of He Dao Sect”
1. Disciples in the sect must not harm their fellow brothers and sisters. Violators will be punished according to the situation! For details, refer to rules 128, 134, and 359…
2. Disciples must not leave the sect without permission…
3. Disciples must not bully the weak with their strength…
As Ji Yang flipped through the pages, he initially found it a bit confusing. Aren’t these rules quite normal?
But after reading the detailed punishments, Ji Yang couldn’t help but ponder for a long time.
He discovered that many punishments involved mining, and there were even provisions for growing spiritual crops and fishing.
For example, the punishment for rule 128:
If a disciple provokes their fellow brothers and injures them, the lightest punishment is to mine for one month, while the most severe is to mine for three months!
Another example is rule 178:
Those who cause trouble, provoke elders or the Peak Master will spend one month fishing at Tianxing Lake, to warn others!
Looking at these punishments and remembering the fearful expressions of the two outer disciples when he inquired, it was clear that these punishments were far from pleasant and differed from his initial thoughts. Otherwise, they wouldn’t be so terrified.
These punishments were just some of the lighter ones. For more serious offenses, there were even harsher penalties, like being confined in the sect’s Youfeng Valley or Bipotan, or even having one’s cultivation abolished and being expelled from the sect!
After reading these rules and punishments, Ji Yang felt troubled.
Clearly, going the usual route to mine or fish wouldn’t work since others avoided these sect rules. If he recklessly bumped into them, wouldn’t that clearly signal that he had a problem?
But if he didn’t mine, how could he unlock his special ability?
Could he really rely on cultivating for five hundred years?
That wouldn’t work; he had to at least give it a try to see the outcome. If it really didn’t work, he could give up then. But if he didn’t try, he would never be satisfied.
Yet, how could he mine reasonably without raising suspicion?
“Identity token!”
When it was Ji Yang’s turn, the elderly guard at the outer affairs office glanced at him and asked.
Ji Yang froze for a moment; he didn’t have an identity token.
After thinking briefly, he replied, “Senior Brother, I just joined and am a new disciple. I haven’t had the chance to receive my identity token yet.”
The old man didn’t seem puzzled; this was common.
“Name, which peak?”
Ji Yang hesitated briefly but then quietly said, “Ji Yang, Jingtan Peak!”
The elder guard said nothing more and directly retrieved an identity token from a corner, then carved Ji Yang’s name on it. He also handed Ji Yang a storage bag.
"Next."
After finishing his task, the old man continued to call out.
Ji Yang scratched his head. He had spoken softly, worried about causing unnecessary trouble, but the old man didn’t seem to care at all, which made him feel a bit embarrassed.
However, looking at the palm-sized storage bag and his identity token, Ji Yang was filled with joy.
The storage bag, made from spatial stones, was very convenient. Basically, every person in the sect had one.
Any cultivator able to sense spiritual energy could use it. Ji Yang, at the first level of Qi Refinement, quickly mastered how to use it.
However, the storage bags issued by the sect were basic ones, with limited space, roughly the size of a small cabinet.
Inside the storage bag, there was a bottle of pills, a beginner-level flying sword, dozens of low-grade spiritual stones, and two sets of outer disciples’ blue robes.
Ji Yang’s clothes were already tattered, and he had long wanted to change them.
As for the bottle of pills and the spiritual stones, they were monthly benefits for the outer disciples.
The Gathering Qi Pills were for Qi Refinement stage disciples to increase their spiritual energy, with one pill provided each month.
Spiritual stones could be used to buy other cultivation resources, with five stones given each month.
To obtain more pills, one had to complete sect tasks to earn contribution points for exchange or purchase with spiritual stones, although the latter was more expensive.
Having received the sect’s starter package,
Now, he had to think about how to mine reasonably.
Ji Yang contemplated for a while and then turned his gaze to the sect rules in his hand. It seemed he had to come up with a plan that wouldn’t be too obvious.
Just as Ji Yang was deep in thought, a commotion arose in the line.
Someone dressed as an outer disciple forced his way to the front.
The person who was cut in front looked young and dared not speak out, clearly afraid of this senior brother’s cultivation level.
While they were all outer disciples, not everyone was part of this batch of new disciples.
There might be disciples from ten, twenty, or even dozens of years ago still at the Qi Refinement stage. They might not be strong, but it was perfectly normal for them to bully outer disciples.
It was clear that the pushing-in brother was one of them, and the others in line seemed uninterested in intervening, rather looking on as if watching a show.
Ji Yang sensed the cultivation level of the one who cut in and found that this person was already at the fifth level of Qi Refinement, clearly far beyond the newcomers.
After all, it had only been a year since the new disciples had joined, and most were still in the sensing stage.
Ji Yang didn’t plan to get involved, but when he saw the sect rules in his hand, a bold idea popped into his mind.
After a moment of hesitation, Ji Yang gritted his teeth and said, “Hey! This senior brother, please wait in line!”
Wuzhen, pleased with himself for cutting in, paused momentarily when he heard, but didn’t show any anger on his face. Instead, he turned with a smile.
There were many disciples in He Dao Sect, and he was only at the fifth level of Qi Refinement, while there were many who were stronger than him. Although this was a place for outer disciples to collect resources, no Foundation Establishment stage seniors would come here.
But he couldn’t rule out the possibility of encountering a higher-level brother who might be displeased with him, so Wuzhen appeared quite friendly.
However, when Wuzhen turned to see who had spoken, his expression instantly grew cold.
“What are you? How dare you speak to a senior brother like that?”
Wuzhen puffed out his chest, looking at Ji Yang with a hint of disdain. He thought he was confronting some important senior brother, but it turned out to be just a new outer disciple!
And just at the first level of Qi Refinement, he dared to challenge him? Did Wuzhen not have a temper?
“Which peak are you from?”
“How dare you be so bold?”
“Don’t forget, provoking a senior brother without cause means that even if you get beaten, no one from your peak will help.”
Many onlookers whispered among themselves. Hearing their words, Ji Yang felt a bit more confident.
Beside him, Wang He noticed Ji Yang speaking up and was about to advise him, but then another person pulled him away.
Wang He hesitated for a bit but didn’t step forward. They were just acquaintances, and he was only at the third level of Qi Refinement, not a match for this senior brother.
Moreover, it was just a matter of cutting in line, nothing serious. It wasn’t worth offending a fifth level of Qi Refinement senior brother over such a small issue.
But he was also curious. This junior brother was only at the first level of Qi Refinement, and even if he was from Denglong Peak, he wouldn’t blindly provoke someone stronger than himself.
After all, there were corresponding rules in the sect: those with higher cultivation levels couldn’t attack those weaker unless the weaker disciple actively provoked them. Even if a fight broke out, it had to be on the challenge platform, witnessed by elders.
