Chapter 310: A Falling Meteor
A sea breeze drifted across the island’s forest, stirring the leaves among the trees with a soft rustle.
Baili Pangpang clapped his hands and looked at the three people bound tightly before him, nodding in satisfaction. “What’s this? I thought they’d be more troublesome. We took them down way too easily.”
Second Seat: …
Fifth Seat: …
Shen Qingzhu: …
Cao Yuan studied the three captives tied together and spoke with a somewhat odd expression. “There’s something off about how you tied them up.”
“Off?” Baili Pangpang asked, puzzled.
“This style of binding…I’ve only ever seen it in certain…special films,” Cao Yuan said hesitantly. “To be honest, you’ve made them look a bit too…enticing.”
“Enticing?” Baili Pangpang scratched his head. “This was taught to me by the maid sisters. Is there a problem with it?”
Cao Yuan’s mouth twitched slightly. “N-no. Nothing.”
“As long as they’re restrained, it doesn’t matter how we do it.” Baili Pangpang waved a hand dismissively. He walked up to the Second Seat, jerked his chin at him, and said, “Hey, behave yourself, got it? Don’t try anything funny here. If I catch you acting up, I’ll chop you all to bits!”
The Fifth Seat glared at Baili Pangpang, eyes burning with the urge to flay him alive. Just as he was about to speak, the Second Seat bumped him with a shoulder and shot him a look.
“All right, we can’t stick around here forever,” Cao Yuan said as he glanced at the nearby black steel wall. “We should figure out a way to enter the Purification Facility.”
Baili Pangpang nodded and quietly followed Cao Yuan toward the facility.
Once the two had gone far enough, the Fifth Seat finally blurted out, “Damn it, this is so humiliating! He’s just acting all high and mighty because he’s got so many forbidden items!”
“Let him be. Our main priority is to lie low and wait for the signal,” the Second Seat said calmly. “You really want to lose your life here just to prove a point? If you want revenge, wait until the Town-Suppression Stele’s effect is gone. It won’t be too late then.”
“Hmph! I’ll get him sooner or later!” the Fifth Seat muttered through clenched teeth.
The Second Seat turned to Shen Qingzhu. “Rookie, why haven’t you said a word this whole time?”
Shen Qingzhu silently watched the two figures receding into the distance and shook his head. “I just…don’t feel like speaking.”
…
Inside the Purification Facility.
Lin Qiye and An Qingyu sat in the shade of a tree, deep in thought. From time to time, they drew complicated lines in the dirt before them with a twig—lines so intricate that a single glance could make one’s head spin.
“The overall layout of the Purification Facility is more or less like this.” Lin Qiye scrutinized the drawing in the dirt for a while, then nodded. “We’ve figured out every building, every watchtower, every checkpoint. Now we just need a workable plan for breaking out.”
An Qingyu thought for a moment. “Any ideas yet?”
“After all these days, I’ve come up with one possibility,” Lin Qiye said slowly, “though it’s not fully formed.”
“Oh? Let’s hear it.”
Lin Qiye explained his plan in detail, and An Qingyu’s eyes lit up a little before she lowered her head in reflection.
“It’s workable, but it’ll require a few external conditions…”
Just then, in the sky a few kilometers away from the Purification Facility, faint, shimmering lights began to appear. A moment later, one corner of the sky simply shattered.
Ding—!
A sharp cracking sound echoed across the heavens. Lin Qiye and An Qingyu, who were talking under the tree, both froze and looked up simultaneously.
A meteor appeared from the broken patch of sky, hurtling downward with terrifying force. As it plummeted, its surface heated up from the friction with the atmosphere, bursting into brilliant flames.
“A meteor?” An Qingyu asked in confusion. “Where did that come from?”
Lin Qiye stood up and narrowed his eyes at the rapidly descending meteor. Its trajectory would place it right over the Purification Facility.
“It’s no natural meteor,” Lin Qiye said with certainty. “Someone’s doing this on purpose.”
An Qingyu gazed at the meteor blazing through the sky, her eyes flickering with a grayish hue. She shook her head. “Thinking an attack like that can destroy the Purification Facility is so naïve.”
Meanwhile, in the Purification Facility’s administrative area…
“A meteor?” Acting Warden Xie Yu repeated, frowning. “Is that a natural occurrence, or is it deliberately caused?”
“Most likely deliberate,” answered one of the guards.
Xie Yu walked over to the window and squinted at the inbound meteor. A strange glimmer flashed in his eyes.
“I see. Notify the military—have them shoot it down.”
“Yes, sir!”
Hoooonk—!!
A piercing alarm blared throughout the Purification Facility. Every inmate froze, their expressions unsettled.
“All free activity time is over. Everyone must return to their cells immediately. I repeat, all free activity time is over. Return to your cells at once!”
The prisoners, still unsure of what was going on, looked around in confusion, only to hear talk of a meteor about to fall. One after another, they dashed out of the cafeteria, hoping for a glimpse. But in the next moment, a swarm of armed guards appeared and forced every inmate back to their cells at gunpoint.
Within mere minutes, the common areas were completely cleared out.
An Qingyu and Lin Qiye exchanged looks. After a brief pause, Lin Qiye spoke. “Let’s go back. Something seems off, and our plan isn’t ready yet. Better be safe.”
An Qingyu nodded and raced toward their cell.
Lin Qiye used his foot to rub out the drawings on the ground. Off in the distance, a male orderly quickly approached. Acting under Doctor Li’s orders, he escorted Lin Qiye back to the infirmary for protection, just in case.
As Lin Qiye walked with the orderly toward the infirmary, his eyes remained fixed on the meteor growing larger in the sky. He knew a single meteor wasn’t likely to threaten the Purification Facility, but he was curious how they’d handle it.
Just before Lin Qiye stepped into the infirmary, two missiles launched from the ground with a roar, trailing blazing tails as they shot toward the falling meteor.
Boom—!!
In the next instant, both missiles struck the meteor. The explosion resounded across the sky, and within the swirling flames, shattered fragments of the meteor tumbled from high above, plunging straight into the sea below.
Just like that, the meteor bound for the Purification Facility was obliterated in midair.
“So there were missiles hidden on the island after all,” Lin Qiye murmured, stepping into the infirmary.
“Whoever launched an attack of that magnitude must be a top-tier force. But if they’re that powerful, they should know an attack like this can’t destroy the Purification Facility…”
He paused for a moment. “This business might be more complicated than it appears.”
