Chapter 308: Going Ashore
Ahead is the island where the Fasting Facility is located.
Upon the tumultuous waves, three figures stood in midair. The foremost person slowly lowered a telescope, speaking calmly.
Shen Qingzhu narrowed his eyes slightly, looking at the black dot on the distant horizon. After a moment’s hesitation, he asked, “With just the three of us, can we really break through the defenses of Daxia’s top-tier prison?”
“Just the three of us? Of course not.” The Second Seat spoke slowly. “But Lord Yiyu has been laying plans for years for the Fasting Facility. We’re definitely not his only option… We shouldn’t overthink it. We just have to follow Lord Yiyu’s instructions and get it done.”
Next to him, the Fifth Seat turned to Shen Qingzhu and asked in puzzlement, “Rookie, why are you wearing a mask? We Believers have always shown our true faces when on missions. Why conceal yourself?”
“That’s what Lord Yiyu arranged.” Shen Qingzhu touched the white fox mask on his face and answered calmly, “I’m young, and I don’t look particularly intimidating. When carrying out special tasks, it’s easy to be underestimated. Only by hiding my face can I keep others from gauging me.”
“So that’s it. Lord Yiyu really thinks highly of you,” the Fifth Seat said enviously.
“Back to the main point,” the Second Seat said coolly. “To create a disturbance at the Fasting Facility, we first need to get close. There are watchtowers everywhere around it, so going by sea will definitely be discovered. The best way is to swim underwater.”
With a slight wave of the Second Seat’s hand, three sets of diving equipment appeared out of nowhere and were tossed to the other two.
“Swim there?” The Fifth Seat frowned. “Why not use the Forbidden Void to teleport straight through from beneath the sea?”
“That island’s surrounding three hundred meters of ocean fall under the Town-Suppression Stele’s influence. Once we get close, the Forbidden Void stops working. If we did what you said, we’d get forced out of the teleport at that three-hundred-meter mark, then be sitting ducks for snipers.”
“…Fine.”
Shen Qingzhu took the diving suit and paused for a moment, closely examining it. He noticed many strange white dots on the suit’s surface.
“This diving suit seems different from normal?”
“Yes. The waters around here all lie within the special sonar detection range of the Fasting Facility. Anything that approaches—submarines, torpedoes, even a regular fish—would be detected and immediately taken out by nano-fish. The prison staff on the island regularly release a certain substance into the surrounding waters to drive fish away, so typically no fish enter that area.”
“They don’t even allow fish near the island? That’s way too strict. And there are so many fish in the sea—do they really kill them all?” the Fifth Seat grumbled.
“I’m just giving an example,” the Second Seat said, glancing at the suit in his hand again. “These diving suits were bought on the black market for a high price. They’re made of special materials that let us avoid sonar detection, so we can pass through that three-hundred-meter zone unnoticed.”
Shen Qingzhu nodded thoughtfully.
“Also, once we get onto the island, remember to stay hidden until we see the signal from Lord Yiyu. That’s when we move,” the Second Seat reminded them carefully.
“Understood!”
…
On one side of the island.
White waves slammed against black reefs, ringing out with a booming roar. Two figures in diving suits were carried onto the shallows by the tide.
“Cough… coughing… I’m beat! Three hundred meters… why did that feel so long?!” One chubby fellow flopped down on the beach, pulled off his oxygen mask, and looked as though all hope was lost.
Cao Yuan took off his mask, scanned the surroundings, and frowned slightly.
“The view here is too open; patrolling prison guards will spot us easily. Let’s go to those woods.” He pointed to a grove in the near distance.
Baili Pangpang sighed, hauled himself to his feet, and followed Cao Yuan swiftly toward the trees. Once they confirmed there was no danger, he plopped down on the ground.
“I’ve never in my life swum such a long distance,” he lamented, peeling off his diving suit and patting his empty stomach. Suddenly recalling something, he turned to Cao Yuan. “Right, give me a few of those compressed biscuits. I’m hungry.”
Cao Yuan glanced sideways at him. “We finished them ages ago. We were drifting at sea for so long, and now they’re gone.”
“Finished? I barely had a few bites! You’re unbelievable, Cao Yuan. I paid for your diving suit, and you secretly polished off my biscuits?” Baili Pangpang glowered.
Cao Yuan rolled his eyes. “You know how many you ate, don’t you?”
Baili Pangpang paused, thought for a moment, and coughed sheepishly. “Well… I guess I’m not that hungry. I can hold off. We made it onto the island, so what now?”
“You’re asking me?” Cao Yuan’s mouth twitched. “Didn’t you say you already had a solid plan?”
Baili Pangpang scratched his head. “Uh… yes. My plan is… we get on the island and then figure things out.”
…
Cao Yuan fought the urge to pull his blade on this unreliable little fatty, took a deep breath, and spoke steadily: “Although we’re on the island, we haven’t entered the Fasting Facility proper. See those towering steel walls? The real Fasting Facility is in there. And there’s only one way in: the main gate, guarded by a huge garrison. So what we have to do now is think of a way to get inside… Why are you just staring off?”
Seeing Baili Pangpang’s gaze fixed on the water, Cao Yuan couldn’t help but snap at him.
“It’s just…” Baili Pangpang stared at the shallows, rubbing his eyes. “I could swear I see three more people coming onto the island. Am I seeing things?”
Cao Yuan froze, then turned toward the spot where they had just come ashore.
Sure enough, three figures in identical diving suits had emerged from the shallow water. After checking their surroundings and muttering a few words to each other, they headed straight for the woods where Cao Yuan and Baili Pangpang were hiding.
“That’s impossible,” Cao Yuan muttered in confusion. “Besides us, who else would sneak onto this island? Have I been gone so long that they turned it into a free diving base?”
While Cao Yuan was still wondering what was going on, the three newcomers had already stepped into the woods. Both groups saw each other at the same time and froze.
All five locked eyes, and in that moment, the air seemed to fall deathly still.
