Chapter 224: Joining Forces
“I have no interest in becoming a Night Watchman,” An Qingyu said calmly. “I only want to freely dissect Mysteries and understand the truest face of this world. What I pursue is truth!”
“If I join the Night Watchmen, I’ll be bound by all sorts of rules. They won’t let me dissect monster corpses like a mad scientist, and I’ll waste lots of time on meaningless things.”
Lin Qiye was speechless after hearing An Qingyu’s words.
“Mad scientist… you’re quite clear about your position.”
Undeniably, An Qingyu was right. If he joined the Night Watchmen, his teammates certainly wouldn’t let him conduct those obviously evil experiments, unless they were all mad too.
For An Qingyu, who pursued truth, this would be a fatal blow.
When they first solved the Nanda Snake Demon case, he wanted Lin Qiye’s help to join the Night Watchmen. But then he neither understood what kind of organization it was nor had awakened his Interdiction. Approaching Mysteries, that was his only option.
But now things were different. He had perfectly created his ideal environment. Why should he settle for less by joining the Night Watchmen?
Lin Qiye looked at An Qingyu and sighed.
So now the question was, should he turn An Qingyu over to the Night Watchmen?
An Qingyu had helped solve the Nanda Snake Demon case with him. Though their contact was brief, he knew An Qingyu wasn’t essentially bad – his pursuits just differed from normal people.
Moreover, this past year, he hadn’t done anything to harm society. Even his underground lab equipment was salvaged discards, and when taking Mystery corpses, he considerately left half for the Night Watchmen.
Lin Qiye hesitated before asking again: “I have another question. Were you the one who sent me information during New Year’s?”
“Yes.” An Qingyu nodded, “But that was just a small favor.”
“For me, it wasn’t just a small favor.” Lin Qiye took a deep breath, “I truly owe you for that time. Now, I should repay it.”
“You mean…”
“I won’t turn you in, but if you do anything to harm society’s safety, no matter how you hide, I’ll drag you out,” Lin Qiye said with narrowed eyes.
An Qingyu’s lips curved slightly, his shy face showing a sincere smile.
“Alright.” He nodded, then seemed to remember something and turned toward the experiment table. “Follow me, I’ll show you something.”
Lin Qiye followed him to the table, eyebrows raising at the three corpses lying there.
“You went to the morgue to see these bodies?” An Qingyu asked.
“Yes.”
“No need to look. Their deaths match the forensic report exactly,” An Qingyu said calmly, donning his white coat. “Fatal wound in the chest, an iron nail piercing the heart, no drug residue, no signs of struggle, no wounds besides the four nail holes used for restraint and the broken fingers.”
“So these three bodies show nothing unusual?” Lin Qiye frowned slightly.
“From your tone, you think the body in the pub was unusual?” An Qingyu’s eyes brightened.
“That body was sent straight to the Night Watchmen’s special department. I couldn’t see it personally or dissect it…”
“No, I haven’t seen that body either,” Lin Qiye shook his head. “I can see it tomorrow, but from the scene photos, I noticed some strange things.”
“Strange things?” An Qingyu’s eyes narrowed, “Like… the blood volume?”
Lin Qiye started, “You noticed too?”
Given An Qingyu’s skills, entering the pub undetected by Little Black wouldn’t be difficult, so Lin Qiye had no doubt he’d seen the scene, maybe even watched the video.
An Qingyu gave him a meaningful look and walked to another area. “Follow me.”
Lin Qiye followed him to an open space with a wall. On the wall was a chalk human outline, positioned almost exactly like the crime scene.
At the figure’s fingers on the wall was a crimson bloodstain.
“I also noticed the scene’s blood seemed too little, so I simulated the incident. The left cup shows my simulated blood volume, the right cup shows the volume I calculated from the photo’s bloodstains.”
An Qingyu took two beakers from a nearby table. The liquid in the left beaker was clearly higher than the right, almost triple the volume.
“Wait.” Lin Qiye interrupted An Qingyu, “You simulated the blood loss? How?”
An Qingyu looked into Lin Qiye’s eyes, smiling silently.
“You… cut off your own fingers?” Lin Qiye frowned.
“With the lizard’s super regeneration, finger regrowth isn’t difficult if I want,” An Qingyu said calmly.
Lin Qiye: …
Indeed, this youth was truly mad!
“The evidence proves that corpse’s blood loss was far less than normal.”
Lin Qiye thought briefly, “So what does this mean? It wasn’t the primary crime scene? Impossible – the video clearly recorded everything. Could the Mystery have blood-drinking habits? Or… did its finger-cutting tool have blood-stopping effects?”
“We can’t conclude from this alone,” An Qingyu shook his head seriously. “I must examine the pub corpse.”
“You can’t get in.”
“You can take me in.”
Hearing this, Lin Qiye frowned. After confirming An Qingyu wasn’t joking, he shook his head, “Not arresting you is already generous. I won’t take you in.”
“Consider it another favor you’ll owe me.”
“…What use is your favor?”
“Don’t know, but it’ll be useful someday,” An Qingyu said confidently. “Besides, with my help, you’ll solve this case faster. Though you’re clever, compared to me, you’re still slightly lacking.”
Lin Qiye stiffly turned to stare at An Qingyu’s eyes.
An Qingyu coughed twice, “I mean, regarding dealing with corpses, I’m better than you.”
“Why are you so obsessed with solving this case?” Lin Qiye asked.
“I can sense that whatever did this series of events is very intelligent.” An Qingyu licked his lips, “The more complex the mystery, the stronger my desire to solve it. The last time I felt such a strong decoding urge was with the Nanda Snake Demon…”
“After dissecting corpses in the dark underground for so long, I want a change of pace.”
Lin Qiye silently rolled his eyes. “Pervert.”
