Chapter 220: The Pursuit
“You want to examine the bodies personally?” Wen Qimo asked with surprise, hesitating before saying, “The body from this case is with the processing department for further autopsy, and the results aren’t out yet… if you want to see it, it’ll probably have to wait until tomorrow.”
“But for the three previous victims, their bodies were handled by the police. After the autopsies, they were placed in the morgue. If you want to see those, we have the authority, and we can go right now.”
Lin Qiye nodded, “Good, I’ll go look at those three bodies first, maybe I can discover something.”
“I need to go back to compile information about this Mystery and request a database check. You can go by yourself – just show your credentials.”
Wen Qimo left in his car, while Lin Qiye decided to walk since his destination wasn’t far.
Just as he left the pub, he paused briefly and turned to look right.
In the corner of the pub, a grey mouse was huddled there. Seeming to notice Lin Qiye’s gaze, it vanished in a flash.
“A mouse…” Lin Qiye frowned. He suddenly felt this scene was somehow familiar…
But he couldn’t quite place it.
He shook his head, not dwelling on it, and continued walking.
The police station storing the bodies wasn’t far from Lin Qiye’s location – about a ten-minute walk brought him to the entrance.
After showing his credentials, an officer quickly stood up and led Lin Qiye to the elevator.
Of course, Lin Qiye didn’t show Night Watchman credentials – Night Watchmen didn’t have such things. Their emblems were their symbols of identity, and their information was kept in top-secret national projects without paper documentation.
What he showed was something like a special agent credential given by the Night Watchmen to coordinate with local police. Not all police knew about the Night Watchmen’s existence, and if they encountered police while pursuing Mysteries, being mistaken for criminals without verifiable identities would cause major problems.
The morgue was on the top floor of the police station. Lin Qiye followed the officer directly through a long corridor.
Just then, from the opposite end of the corridor, an orderly wearing a mask approached, pushing a corpse trolley. The body was completely wrapped in a white sealed bag, nothing exposed.
For some reason, Lin Qiye felt an odd sense of familiarity looking at the orderly pushing the corpse.
Unfortunately, they were over a hundred meters apart, so he couldn’t use his spiritual power to sense the other’s face. However, at their current pace, they would soon cross paths.
The orderly with the trolley narrowed his eyes and, just before entering Lin Qiye’s sensing range, unhurriedly turned into the right intersection. The movement seemed completely natural, as if that had been his intended route all along.
Seeing this, Lin Qiye frowned in surprise, confusion appearing in his eyes.
After hesitating for a moment, he asked the officer beside him:
“Do you often have bodies being transported out of here?”
The officer was startled, “Not really… bodies are only brought to the morgue for autopsy in murder cases. Changnan is a small, peaceful place where murders don’t happen often, so…”
Hearing this, Lin Qiye had an ominous feeling and immediately quickened his pace.
The two entered the morgue, and Lin Qiye walked up to the forensic doctor on duty, took out his credentials, and seriously asked, “I need to see the bodies from the three finger-cutting cases. Where are they?”
The forensic doctor looked confused, with a hint of daze, “They… weren’t they just transferred?”
Lin Qiye’s heart sank as he turned to look at the officer.
The officer shook his head, “Old Jia, are you confused? There were never any orders to transfer bodies. Who could have taken them?”
“But someone really did show credentials, saying they needed to transfer these three bodies to a medical facility in Huaihai City for further autopsy…” the forensic doctor said anxiously as the daze gradually left his eyes.
“When did this happen?” Lin Qiye asked with furrowed brows.
“Just now, before you came in.”
A gleam flashed in Lin Qiye’s eyes as he quickly ran to the bedside and looked down.
At the back entrance, he saw the orderly from earlier loading the sealed bags into a black van’s trunk. The orderly looked up briefly before getting into the vehicle and slowly driving away…
“Damn it!”
That orderly was suspicious after all!
Without another word, Lin Qiye turned and pushed open the morgue door, running toward the roof!
Opening the roof door, Lin Qiye quickly determined the direction the vehicle had gone and ran to the edge of the roof. Without hesitation, he leaped off!
His form floated through the air like a leaf. Six stories below him, he could see cars driving on the street.
In front of him was a five-story building.
With this leap, Lin Qiye jumped nearly a hundred meters, from the six-story police station to the roof of the five-story building.
Enhanced by [Star Night Dancer], his physical abilities appeared superhuman to ordinary people.
Landing on the roof, Lin Qiye didn’t pause at all but continued running forward along the direction of the road.
His figure leaped between the countless neon lights.
Meanwhile, he took out his phone and dialed a number.
“Seven Night?” Wu Xiangnan’s voice came through the phone.
“Vice Captain, I’ve found someone who might be a Secret Stealer. I need to track a car!”
Wu Xiangnan paused before seriously responding, “Alright, tell me.”
“A black van left the police station one minute ago, license plate XXXXXX, heading east,” Lin Qiye said confidently, having caught the plate number.
“Got it. I’ll call you as soon as I find anything.” Wu Xiangnan hesitated before adding, “If things look bad, don’t be reckless. Staying alive is most important.”
“Mm.”
Lin Qiye hung up.
His figure continued leaping between buildings, following the direction he remembered the car taking, carefully examining every vehicle, trying to find its trail.
…
In a narrow alley.
A black van with its lights off drove quietly through.
In the driver’s seat, the orderly pulled off his mask, revealing a clean, fair face of a young man. He took a pair of glasses from the passenger seat and put them on, giving off a scholarly air.
His gaze swept the window outside, his lips curling slightly upward,
“Lin Qiye, catching me… depends on whether you have what it takes.”
