Chapter 1755 End of Volume Summary5
Volume 5 is complete. I’ll quickly summarize and then move on to the next chapter.
This volume has even more words than Volume 3 “Extremely Evil City”… which I didn’t expect, but it couldn’t be helped as there were too many stories to tell in this volume.
The volume title “Who We Once Were” refers to three groups of people: first, the [Hero] squad that appears at the beginning of the volume; second, the [Nightfall] squad; and third, the original chess pieces spanning two thousand years… Of course, the most important aspect is the separation of [Nightfall].
All good things must come to an end, and eternal companionship exists only in dreams, especially for [Nightfall] members who each carry different missions.
From Bai Pangpang’s awakening during the Battle of Chennan Gate, to Jiang Er’s death, to An Qingyu’s betrayal, to Cao Yuan’s death, and then to Shen Qingzhu’s return… [Nightfall] has separated and reunited, with people constantly leaving and others returning.
By the time Lin Qiye finally stood at the peak of Jiuhua Mountain and became the seventh Commander of the Night Watchers of Great Xia, only Brother Zhuai remained by his side.
But this is the growth that Lin Qiye needed to experience.
Was Lin Qiye impressive during the bloody battle at Chennan Gate? Of course! As a multi-god proxy with the Kusanagi Sword and the Divine Mental Hospital as his cheat ability, he was naturally a young hero sweeping across the battlefield, the legendary [Nightfall] captain!
But could he be considered a true powerhouse?
No.
At that time, he was at most just a young man with extraordinary talent.
To carry the banner of humanity and become a powerhouse who influences human destiny, these things weren’t enough. His mental fortitude was still far too lacking…
He needed to experience more: the departure of brothers, the death of comrades, betrayal by those he trusted most, the loss of his most beloved, being manipulated by powerful enemies, and losing everything he once relied on.
Perhaps I’ve written about things that many other types of books avoid, because from the beginning, this book’s purpose wasn’t simply to be “satisfying.”
After experiencing confusion, pain, despair multiple times, and after two thousand years of sedimentation, the current Lin Qiye finally has the appearance of a “powerhouse”… Of course, being strong doesn’t mean being invincible. The next volume won’t be some invincible power fantasy. Lin Qiye has just reached a higher position to continue his story.
In this volume, I also wrote two elaborate love stories… which is actually my weakest area. Many people have told me, “If you can’t write romance well, then don’t write it. There are plenty of novels without female leads that are still good.”
Hmmmm… but I always feel that a story without love is incomplete, because humans are emotional beings. If a character doesn’t experience any fluctuations of love, they’re just a tool to advance the plot rather than a living “person.”
So despite constant criticism, I’ve been working hard to learn and explore emotional storylines. I put a lot of effort into the relationship between Qingyu and Qiye. It’s at least somewhat better than before, right?
Now let me briefly talk about the other two groups.
The [Hero] squad doesn’t take up much space in this volume, but I’ve already described each member to varying degrees because they represent not just characters, but snapshots of different eras under the “God Slayer” background.
I’ll talk about Huo Qubing and Gongyang Wan later. From Nie Jinshan representing the turbulent era, to Li Qingqiang representing the development era, to Tang Yusheng representing the modern era, to Wang Qing representing the contemporary era—each of their existences corresponds to a period in the “God Slayer” timeline that wasn’t described in the book but truly existed. Their presence expands the world-building and gives the Night Watchers more depth.
The “once were” here also refers to the contrast and conflict between their eras and the era in which the story takes place.
Then there are the first “chess pieces” from two thousand years ago—Huo Qubing and Gongyang Wan—who upheld that ancient and dangerous era.
Two thousand years ago, Lin Qiye met Jialan, the Yaochi turmoil occurred, the Demon Suppression Bureau was established, the Black King was born, and the chess game began… They are the starting point of this story and critical turning points for humanity.
This volume contains over 800,000 words, condensing the past and future of a group of people. Both in terms of time span and depth of foundation, it’s more grand than any previous volume.
To be honest, at this word count, I’m getting increasingly tired of writing, but I’m still pulling my hair out trying to make this story better, because readers who have followed the updates to this point are truly dedicated fans (❁´◡`❁)*✲゚
Alright, just one volume left!
This volume might be relatively short. I expect to conclude at just over 4 million words. This marathon that has lasted nearly two years should finally reach its end.
The title of the final volume is “Under the Nightfall”… I won’t spoil the specific meaning, those who know will understand.
The next time I write a summary, it should be for the completed novel. To all the dedicated fans who have followed the updates to this point, I’ll see you at the grand finale.
