Chapter 1629 Meeting Gift
Boom——!!
The earth-shattering explosion echoed across the dark city’s sky. Citizens hiding in their homes trembled, peering through door cracks to see mysterious creatures swarming toward the top of the tavern, only to be frantically cut down by two figures.
“It’s the Marquis’s people! The Marquis has come to protect us!”
Seeing this scene, the male head of one household showed a look of joy, but not daring to speak loudly, he could only whisper.
“Thank you, Marquis, thank you… thank you for avenging my little son who was eaten…” The woman beside him knelt down in their home, repeatedly bowing toward the tavern, her face covered in tears.
“Father, there seems to be someone on the road?” A boy peered through the door crack, blinking his eyes uncertainly.
“What nonsense are you talking? How could anyone be on the road at this time? Wouldn’t that be suicide?”
“But there really is someone…”
The man looked through another crack in the door and indeed saw a figure wearing a black robe and bamboo hat walking along the road toward the tavern.
“Is he insane?!” The man’s pupils contracted slightly.
“Father, a monster is flying down toward him!” The boy exclaimed again.
They saw one of the creatures that had been flying toward the tavern suddenly notice the figure below and change direction, swooping down at him!
In the dim starlight, they could see it was a fierce bat-like monster. When it opened its mouth, its bloody maw seemed large enough to swallow their house whole. Seeing the bat charging toward them, the woman let out a piercing scream.
Just as the bat was about to swallow the figure along with their house, the figure suddenly looked up and threw a punch straight out!
Boom——!!
His fist smashed into the bat’s jaw, opening a ghastly bloody hole in its body. Then a flash of a broken sword sliced through, cutting off its head as easily as cutting tofu.
It all happened so quickly. In the man’s eyes, the figure merely shifted slightly, and blood rained down across the entire street. A grotesque head rolled to a stop right in front of their door.
Seeing the monster’s head at such close range, the man was scared out of his wits and fell to the ground with a cry!
The figure in the bamboo hat and black robe glanced at them, hesitated for a moment, then picked up the bat’s head with one hand, muttering:
“I’ll use this thing as a greeting gift for the Marquis…”
The figure glanced at the door, then walked directly toward the tavern.
After a few steps, a giant wolf suddenly sprang out from a street corner, bloodlust gleaming in its eyes. It glared at the figure and charged forward with a roar… There was a loud crash, and the figure now held another wolf head in his hand.
“Two greeting gifts…” A faint voice carried from the distance, dissipating in the wind.
…
The sounds of chaotic fighting came from the top of the tavern. Huo Qubing withdrew his gaze and returned to sit at the dining table.
He picked up his chopsticks, tapped them lightly on the edge of the table, and unhurriedly began eating the remaining dishes, as if the fighting outside had nothing to do with him, like he was merely a diner enjoying his meal.
“Your subordinates are fighting outside, yet you eat so leisurely?” the female prisoner remarked softly.
“They still need the experience,” Huo Qubing said calmly while eating.
“And you don’t?”
“I do, but these enemies offer little benefit to me.”
“Such arrogance,” the female prisoner couldn’t help but laugh. “Then tell me, how strong are you now? Invincible under heaven?”
“I wouldn’t say invincible under heaven,” Huo Qubing replied unhurriedly. On his young, sharp face, a pair of deep eyes reflected the earth and stars outside the window. “But in this era, I, Huo Qubing, am humanity’s highest pillar.”
“Humanity’s highest?”
Hearing this description, the female prisoner was stunned for a moment, then coldly laughed, “I thought the legendary Champion Marquis would be some kind of heroic figure, but now I see you’re just an arrogant, conceited youth.”
Huo Qubing didn’t argue. He lowered his head, picked up a piece of fish, and chewed it carefully.
Seeing Huo Qubing’s lack of reaction, a glint flashed in the female prisoner’s eyes. “If you’re humanity’s highest, then why do you need these special shackles to restrain me? Are you so strong yet afraid I might escape from you? Being so cautious, how dare you call yourself humanity’s first?”
Huo Qubing’s chopsticks paused. He looked at the female prisoner, a smile curling at the corner of his mouth:
“Trying to provoke me… You’re not stupid, but your provocation skills need improvement.”
The female prisoner’s expression froze, and she snorted coldly, turning her head away.
“However, if you really want to try, I can give you a chance,” Huo Qubing’s voice came again.
“What?”
“I’ll remove your shackles, and you can use all your abilities to try to escape this city… If you escape, I’ll let you run for three days before I hunt you down.”
Hearing these words, a glimmer of hope flashed in the female prisoner’s eyes. “And if I don’t escape?”
“If you don’t escape, before you’re dismembered in Chang’an, you’ll obey my every command.”
The female prisoner frowned deeply, seemingly calculating something.
“If you’re thinking that even if you don’t escape, you can still refuse to follow my orders, you should abandon that thought now.” Huo Qubing seemed to see through her thoughts. He waved his hand, and from the void behind him, a purple insect flew out and landed in his palm.
“This is called the ‘Heart-Returning Worm,’ one of the ‘mysteries’ under my control. If you don’t escape, you’ll have to eat it… Then whether you obey orders or not won’t be up to you.”
The female prisoner looked at the purple insect, her expression immediately turning ugly.
But looking down at the heavy shackles on her shoulders, her eyes still showed conflict. After a long while, as if making up her mind, she nodded solemnly:
“Fine, I agree!”
Huo Qubing slowly put down his chopsticks and walked in front of the female prisoner, a smile appearing on his young general’s face.
“Then the bet begins.”
His finger lightly hooked, and the heavy shackles on the female prisoner’s shoulders immediately broke into two pieces. Mental power surged back into her body, and a long-absent sense of strength filled her entire being!
The female prisoner’s eyes immediately brightened. A powerful aura comparable to humanity’s ceiling burst forth. Like an agile cheetah, she instantly leaped out the window, disappearing into the night sky.
He actually let me go?!
The female prisoner’s heart was wild with joy. Her figure landed steadily on the ground two streets away, now just over a hundred meters from the city gate—nothing to someone of her ability!
“Arrogant fool.”
She snorted lightly, about to dash through the city gate when a figure in a black robe and bamboo hat, dragging a pile of unidentifiable monster heads, suddenly emerged from a street corner.
“Huh?” Lin Qiye was startled to see the female prisoner in the middle of the road. “Isn’t that the prisoner?”
He looked up toward the tavern, a smile also appearing at the corner of his mouth:
“This greeting gift should be more valuable…”
