Chapter 1501 On the Hospital Bed
“Is it over?” Lin Qiye stood at the edge of the mist, watching the black shadow disappear at the horizon, raising his eyebrows in surprise. “That was faster than I expected…”
“Perhaps it was the ancestral god’s aura that scared it away.” Wang Mian let out a long breath, his silver-white hair floating in the air. “During this period, our Great Xia has suffered a series of fierce battles. Both the Great Xia gods and the Night Watchers have been severely weakened… It will probably take a long time to gradually recover.”
Bang—!
Just as Wang Mian finished speaking, a cloud of blood mist exploded from his back. His mouth twitched slightly from the pain as he rewound time to one second earlier.
“Does it hurt?” Lin Qiye couldn’t help but ask upon seeing this.
“Yes,” Wang Mian paused. “But I’m getting used to it now.”
Lin Qiye looked at that aged face with complex emotions and softly said, “You… have worked hard.”
“It’s not hard. If I hadn’t reached this point, I wouldn’t have been able to save my team members.” Wang Mian seemed to recall something, and a smile appeared on his pained face. “With the law of time and enough lifespan, I’ll be able to bring back the [Mask] team soon.”
This was the first time since Wang Mian had reached the human ceiling that Lin Qiye had seen such a smile on his face, as if this was the motivation that had kept Wang Mian going until now.
Several streaks of light crossed the sky, flying directly toward the war checkpoint. They were the human ceiling experts returning from the front line.
“Wang Mian.” Zuo Qing’s figure stopped halfway through his flight, noticing the two below, and slowly descended. He said to Wang Mian, “The Spiritual Treasure Heavenly Lord is waiting for you in the Celestial Court.”
“Waiting for me?” Wang Mian was slightly stunned. “Alright, I understand.”
“Commander Zuo, where are you all heading?” Lin Qiye asked.
“The battle here has come to a pause. I need to return to Chennan Pass. Shao Pingge and the others are still there.” Zuo Qing pointed to the aircraft inside the checkpoint. “Want to come along?”
Lin Qiye thought for a moment before nodding in agreement, following closely behind Zuo Qing.
If all went as expected, An Qingyu, Jiang Er, and Cao Yuan would also be at Chennan Pass. He had been away for so long that they must be anxiously waiting. Since Zuo Qing was also heading back, he might as well catch a ride.
…
Chennan Pass.
Command Center.
“Phew…” Shao Pingge lay back in his office chair, letting out a long breath, his entire body relaxing lazily. “They’re finally back… If they hadn’t returned soon, I would have died from exhaustion. Being Commander-in-Chief is really not a job for humans. Even the chair is so hard, not comfortable to lie on at all.”
Yuan Gang, sitting across from him, silently rolled his eyes. “What exhaustion are you talking about?! Haven’t I been handling all the paperwork for you these past few days?! I’m the actual interim Commander-in-Chief! All you’ve done is sleep here!”
“Yes, yes, yes, Commander Yuan is right.” Shao Pingge smiled perfunctorily.
Upon hearing the news of Zuo Qing and the others’ return, everyone at Chennan Pass relaxed. The consecutive battles had left them physically and mentally exhausted. Now, with the return of the Great Xia gods and many human ceiling experts, they felt a great sense of security.
“By the way, Commander Zuo just sent a message saying we can withdraw this batch of people from Chennan Pass and let them return to their respective stations for a good vacation.”
“Withdraw everyone? Won’t that cause problems? What if Olympus or the K-system attacks?”
“Who knows? Perhaps the Great Xia gods have their own plans.” Shao Pingge shrugged. “But I think there won’t be any fighting for a while. The [Black Goat]’s army was scared off by the return of the Great Xia gods, and they’ll need time to regroup. As for Olympus… heh, they should be grateful if they can avoid us. We haven’t settled the score for their banishment of our Great Xia gods yet.”
Yuan Gang nodded slightly. “So, we can go back too?”
“Not us. I still need to stay at the front line to maintain the dream network and prevent any opportunists from sneaking into Great Xia.”
“???” Yuan Gang widened his eyes. “If you’re staying, what does that have to do with ‘us’?”
“Since I’m staying, how could you feel comfortable going back on vacation alone?”
“?”
As the two were bickering, a familiar figure walked in from outside, smiling as he watched them.
Catching sight of the person from the corner of his eye, Shao Pingge immediately cleared his throat. “Commander Zuo.”
“Commander Zuo.” Yuan Gang silently put away his fist, which was as big as a sandbag, and stood behind Shao Pingge.
Lin Qiye followed behind Zuo Qing, also smiling as he observed the two. On his way here, his spiritual power had already captured the entire scene.
“How does it feel to be Commander-in-Chief?” Zuo Qing smiled.
“Don’t even mention it. There’s a ton of annoying things to deal with, and the pressure is too much. I can’t even get a good night’s sleep…” Shao Pingge grumbled for a while, while Yuan Gang behind him looked like his eyes were about to pop out.
Annoying things?! Did you even look at any of the documents?!
“…Sigh, I’m used to being idle. I really can’t handle the position of Commander-in-Chief.” Shao Pingge shook his head. “Fortunately, you’re back.”
Shao Pingge immediately stood up from the chair and gave it to Zuo Qing, as if it were something too hot to sit on, not wanting to stay on it any longer.
Zuo Qing didn’t seem surprised by this. He smiled and said, “By the way, how’s the matter I just notified you about going?”
“I’ve already passed on the notice. They should have packed their things and be ready to return to their respective stations.”
“What about the bodies of the fallen heroes?”
“They’ve all been sent back too. By my calculation, they should arrive a bit earlier than the others.”
Zuo Qing nodded slightly. “Thank you both for your hard work during this time.”
“Captain Shao, where are my team members?” Lin Qiye finally asked after the two had finished their official business.
Hearing this question, Shao Pingge paused, opened his mouth, his expression seemingly bitter.
“They…”
“Did something happen to them?” Lin Qiye’s heart sank upon seeing his expression.
“…Not exactly… come with me.”
Shao Pingge sighed and walked toward the adjacent building, with Lin Qiye following closely behind.
A few minutes later, Shao Pingge arrived at the door of a medical room and gently knocked.
Knock, knock, knock—
Rustling sounds came from behind the door. After a moment, the door to the medical room opened, and a haggard figure stood behind it—it was Cao Yuan.
“Captain Shao, you…” Cao Yuan’s words trailed off as he caught sight of the person behind Shao Pingge, and a light gleamed in his eyes.
“Qiye?!! You’re back?!”
Lin Qiye stood at the entrance of the medical room, the unease in his heart growing stronger. “Who’s hurt?”
Cao Yuan opened his mouth but said nothing, only silently stepping back half a step. Lin Qiye quickly walked in.
In the center of the room, on the hospital bed, a figure lay quietly under the snow-white sheets, connected to various machines that emitted beeping sounds…
