Chapter 1491 Helplessness
“Useless… still useless…” An Qingyu threw the hot towel into the basin, quickly walked to the wall covered with formulas, and frustratingly tore down all the drawings pinned on it, crumpling them into pieces that scattered in the air.
“Damn it! Why can’t I find where they are…”
“Qingyu…” Jiang Er pressed her lips together, her figure floating behind him, gently embracing him with open arms, comforting him, “You’ve already done your best… Even the Heavenly Venerable couldn’t calculate their location, why force yourself?”
All of An Qingyu’s efforts these days, Jiang Er had witnessed. She watched him repeatedly fill the entire wall with calculations, then discard everything to start over with a new approach, battling day and night, ultimately achieving nothing… This cycle repeated countless times, and even though An Qingyu kept adjusting his mindset, he couldn’t bear the despair that came after each failure.
“Space-time is constantly changing. The longer we wait, the more remote their chances of returning become,” An Qingyu took a deep breath, trying to calm his emotions. “The Heavenly Venerable relies on divination and metaphysics, while I rely on science and truth. The two approaches don’t conflict.”
Jiang Er opened her mouth, about to say something more, when a knock came from outside the door.
“Cao Yuan is here,” Jiang Er said, seeing the visitor through the hallway monitor.
An Qingyu smoothed his wrinkled clothes and tidied his messy hair to make himself look less haggard, then quickly walked forward to open the laboratory door.
“How’s it going?” Cao Yuan asked.
“…Still haven’t found them.”
Cao Yuan’s peripheral vision caught the scattered paper fragments inside the room and the dense formulas covering the wall, his expression incredibly complex.
“You’ve done your best, don’t push yourself too hard,” Cao Yuan patted his shoulder reassuringly.
“Did you bring what I asked for?”
“Yes.”
Cao Yuan entered the laboratory and placed the black metal box on the table. The box was cylindrical, resembling a plastic container for shuttlecocks but several times larger and considerably heavier.
An Qingyu stepped forward, swiped his fingertip across a corner of the metal container, and its middle section immediately contracted, revealing a section of specialized glass tube inside.
In the dark yellow liquid, a thick, fleshy worm-like ball slowly writhed. Looking carefully, one could make out the contours of an arm, except now this arm was covered with crimson insect eyes, and even the five fingers had transformed into tentacles with suction cups, stirring in the liquid.
Seeing this, even Cao Yuan frowned, feeling disgusted.
“Qingyu, what do you need this thing for?” Cao Yuan asked gravely.
An Qingyu didn’t speak, just lowered his head in deep thought.
A streak of light crossed the sky, interrupting the three’s conversation. An Qingyu looked outside, asking in surprise:
“Why is the Heavenly Venerable back?”
“Not sure… let’s go see.”
An Qingyu shouldered the black coffin from the corner and followed Cao Yuan out of the laboratory. This was his only time leaving through this door in the past week, and the sudden brightness outside made him squint.
They saw the figure walk directly into the Chennan Gate Command Center and disappear.
“Coming back and going straight to Commander Shao?” Cao Yuan scratched his head in confusion. “Did something happen?”
“I have an ominous feeling… let’s follow and see.”
Everyone quickened their pace, heading straight for the command center.
…
“Nightwatcher Acting Commander Shao Pingge, greets the Primordial Heavenly Venerable.”
Inside the command center, the sleepy-eyed Shao Pingge immediately became serious upon seeing the figure, and formally saluted.
“No need for formalities,” the Primordial Heavenly Venerable looked around. “Has Dao De returned?”
“The Dao De Heavenly Venerable returned two days ago, but since you weren’t in Great Xia, you wouldn’t know.”
As Shao Pingge spoke, the Dao De Heavenly Venerable, wearing a black and white Taoist robe, silently emerged from nothingness, his unruly Taoist hairpin falling over his shoulders, his brow deeply furrowed.
“Where is Vishnu?” asked the Primordial Heavenly Venerable.
“I slashed half his face, but he escaped,” the Dao De Heavenly Venerable sighed helplessly. “That fellow split himself in two when I chased him near the Antarctic Circle. One part of his body detained me while the other part fled and disappeared.”
The Primordial Heavenly Venerable wasn’t surprised. In battles between supreme gods, unless one had overwhelming power like Michael, it wasn’t easy to determine life and death. Having forced Vishnu to flee with serious injuries had already achieved the expected goal; he shouldn’t be able to cause trouble for some time.
“You felt it too, didn’t you?”
“Yes,” the Dao De Heavenly Venerable frowned and asked, “Was it the [Black Goat]’s doing?”
“It should be…”
The Primordial Heavenly Venerable paused, then continued, “Michael must guard the moon and cannot descend to Earth anytime soon. With most divine realms nearly extinguished and our Great Xia gods banished, I fear…”
“If I were that [Black Goat], I would certainly launch a surprise attack on Great Xia at this moment,” the Dao De Heavenly Venerable’s thoughts aligned closely with the Primordial Heavenly Venerable’s. “What should we do?”
“This [Black Goat] is the Mother of Gods from the Cthulhu system. Her specialty isn’t direct combat but breeding offspring… Unless she’s certain of victory, she wouldn’t dare enter the battlefield herself. She’s likely to send her spawn to slaughter our Great Xia citizens, or spread contamination within our borders.
The three pillar gods of the Cthulhu system come from beyond this world, making divination ineffective against them. The only method is to rely on Shao Pingge’s ‘Dream Net’ to identify their attack direction, and then, you will intercept them…”
The Primordial Heavenly Venerable slowly explained his plan.
“I’ll intercept? Then what about you?” asked the Dao De Heavenly Venerable.
After a moment of silence, the Primordial Heavenly Venerable said deliberately: “This poor Taoist will follow the spawn’s trajectory to kill the [Black Goat] herself.”
Everyone present was shocked.
“Impossible. The [Black Goat] is one of the three pillar gods of the Cthulhu system. Even if she’s not skilled in combat, she’s not someone you can handle alone,” the Dao De Heavenly Venerable immediately shook his head.
“The [Black Goat] has numerous offspring. Even if we join forces, we cannot completely block them; they will eventually circumvent us and enter Great Xia to slaughter our people… Rather than that, we might as well risk everything,” fierce killing intent flashed in the Primordial Heavenly Venerable’s eyes.
The Dao De Heavenly Venerable opened his mouth, wanting to say more, but couldn’t find the words.
“If only Lingbao and the other Great Xia gods were here, things might be different…” the Dao De Heavenly Venerable shook his head bitterly.
“This poor Taoist has searched for them for seven full days without success… Now, we can only rely on ourselves,” said the Primordial Heavenly Venerable.
Seeing the grave expressions of Shao Pingge and the two Heavenly Venerables, he felt immense pressure. Just as he was considering whether to mobilize all Nightwatchers within Great Xia’s borders, he caught sight of something from the corner of his eye.
“Why are you all here?” he asked An Qingyu and the others.
