Chapter 1209 Inside the Dungeon
“You’re still talking? If it weren’t for you selling the information about [The King’s Treasury] to those two Greek gods, would we be in this situation?”
“That’s laughable. Do you think if I hadn’t sold it voluntarily, they wouldn’t have made a move? Think about it carefully – why would two deities personally attend the proxy meeting?” Number 22 sneered.
“They already knew someone at this gathering had clues about [The King’s Treasury]. Even if I hadn’t spoken up, they would have captured us after the meeting and interrogated us one by one!
Even their enslavement of us, forcing us to enter [The King’s Treasury], was planned in advance!
The only difference is that Number 33, the prophet, foresaw their actions and used false information about the dual-god proxy to induce us to actively attack Numbers 03 and 04, turning us from passive victims into active aggressors…”
“Silence!!”
Outside the cell, an attendant roared.
He glared, opened the cell door and walked in, his gaze fixed on Number 22 who had been talking. He raised his right foot and violently kicked Number 22 in the chest.
With his body bound by silver chains, unable to use his divine powers, Number 22 could only be kicked like a ball to the edge of the wall.
“Whoever makes noise again won’t wait for tomorrow’s execution sacrifice to the three gods – I’ll kill you tonight!” the attendant warned in ancient Greek.
Number 22 lay against the wall, staring intently at the attendant’s retreating figure, a flash of viciousness in his eyes.
After the attendant walked away, everyone relaxed.
“Now is not the time to discuss these things. If we can’t bring out [The King’s Treasury] within three days, we’re all dead,” said Number 09, Thor’s proxy Jack Claude, speaking calmly in a low voice.
“What we need to do now is think together if there’s any way to escape.”
“What way could there be? Our divine powers are locked, and outside there’s an old man who can drain our mental energy at any time… Are we expecting some divine intervention to rescue us from this hellhole?”
A proxy shook his head helplessly.
As his words fell, the next moment, all the flickering candles in the dungeon went out simultaneously!
Whoosh!
The entire dungeon fell into dead, dark silence.
“What happened? Why did the lights go out?”
“Did wind come in?”
“Don’t panic, those near the oil lamps hurry to light them, quickly… ugh!”
“…”
In the darkness, the somewhat panicked attendants made a series of slight muffled groans, followed by the sound of bodies falling.
In less than five seconds, the attendants’ voices completely disappeared.
Snap!
Then, a crisp finger snap sounded, and all the extinguished candles automatically lit up, dancing in the darkness.
Outside the empty dungeon, fallen attendants were everywhere. A figure wearing a black cloak stood with his back to the light source, his elongated shadow cast onto the ancient brick wall, swaying gently with the candlelight like a demon emerging from hell.
Seeing this scene, the proxies’ pupils suddenly contracted!
They stared at the figure before them, not daring to breathe.
The black figure raised both hands, gently removing the wide hood. Naturally falling wavy golden hair revealed a familiar Western face.
“You?!” The proxies recognized that face immediately and exclaimed in shock.
“Yes, Brown Myers.”
Lin Qiye pushed his monocle and smiled, “We meet again, everyone.”
After a long while, everyone recovered from their shock. Number 22 looked at Lin Qiye and narrowed his eyes:
“It seems you entered this place before we did… How did you avoid that divine turtle?”
“Everyone has their own secrets, don’t they?” Lin Qiye’s smile grew brighter.
“You deceived us with false information, making us confront those two deities while you escaped!” someone in the crowd coldly spoke up.
“Ladies and gentlemen, I never said that Numbers 03 or 04 were the dual-god proxies. I said I could only guarantee the correct movement trajectory of the dual-god proxy. As for whether he attended this meeting, that was merely speculation.
Besides, I warned you early on that those two were suspicious. You chose to attack them yourselves, didn’t you?”
Lin Qiye spoke unhurriedly, “You say I deceived you… then tell me, at which point did I tell a lie?”
The proxies were momentarily speechless.
Lin Qiye was right. From beginning to end, he hadn’t told a single lie. He had merely exploited everyone’s covetous psychology toward the dual-god proxy, adding some verbal inducement to prompt them to become enemies with Numbers 03 and 04… Even if they wanted to pick at his words, they couldn’t find fault.
“Moreover, those two deities had their eyes on you long ago. Even without me, you couldn’t have escaped,” Lin Qiye patiently continued.
“I did use you to delay those two deities, but if I hadn’t, I would have been captured like you, entered this treasury at the same time as you, and been trapped in the dungeon waiting to die…
If that happened, who would be left to save you?”
The proxies all froze upon hearing this.
“Are you saying you foresaw things would develop this way, so you deliberately left the meeting early, entered the treasury in advance, and waited here to rescue us?” a proxy asked suspiciously. “That’s too far-fetched…”
Number 22 stared intently at Lin Qiye’s eyes. “Why would you save us? There’s no benefit to you in doing so.”
“Benefit? Of course there is.” Lin Qiye smiled, spreading his hands and declaring loudly,
“This treasury contains numerous divine artifacts. Any single one taken out would be beyond our reach in the mist… They are destined to be divided among the deities of the major divine nations. How would they ever fall to proxies like us?
To put it nicely, we are divine proxies, but to put it bluntly… we are just dogs of the various divine nations.”
Hearing these words, Lin Qiye clearly felt that most of the proxies’ gazes changed. Recognition appeared in the depths of their eyes.
“But here, everything is different,” Lin Qiye said persuasively in his mellow voice. “This [King’s Treasury] cannot be entered by deities. For proxies like us, this is the greatest opportunity of our lives!
If we can take one or two divine artifacts out of here, perhaps we’ll have the capital to hold our heads high… After all, who doesn’t want a divine artifact by their side?
But as you’ve seen, this treasury is fraught with danger. Even with my ability to foresee the future, going alone is too dangerous.
So I think we can join forces.
Those two deities want [The King’s Treasury]?
Let them have it!
But how many divine artifacts are actually hidden inside… hehe, how would they know?
During the process of securing the treasury, if each of us takes one or two artifacts to hide and bring out, they won’t even notice items are missing.
This way, you complete your mission and get divine artifacts… Isn’t that perfect?”
