Chapter 50: The Commander Requests Your Presence
As people spread in different directions, they dove into the grass, starting to scatter and catch rabbits. Wow! As they moved, the dense grass by the runway came alive as countless rabbits were startled and sprang out—gray, black, yellow, and spotted. Clearly, there were multiple species of rabbits residing here.
Lin Mo never imagined there would be so many little creatures around the base; it was almost a rabbit infestation. Even on the runway, over a dozen rabbits suddenly dashed out. It was hard to believe that the number of rabbits rivaled the population of people at the base.
“Block them! Block them!”
“Use the slingshot; I want to catch some alive!”
“Old Hu, where are you throwing those knives? I want some good hides!”
“Brother, you’re an ace shot! Eye shots!”
“Where? Where? No need to be modest! Watch out; a rabbit’s about to hit your leg! Old Li, break its leg!”
“Ouch! These rabbits are going crazy; the netters, hurry, surround them!”
“A sweep today will keep us well-fed for several days!”
Runways One and Two were bustling with activity. Thirty-something people moved like pebbles tossed into a small pond, their shouts echoing loudly, leading to a one-sided slaughter.
Others had even greater success—those with crossbows used laser sights to lock on, and the rabbits that got hit fell instantly. Meanwhile, using nets, slings, and snares meant catching plenty of live rabbits, which everyone held by the ears and stuffed into large burlap sacks, waiting for a butcher’s fate.
Some skilled individuals didn’t use any tools at all; they simply raced after the rabbits on foot, catching them with bare hands and tossing them into their bags—truly impressive, embodying unmatched strength and power.
Old Hu from the fuel depot wielded a stick with no mop head left, counting out loud, “Bang! One!” “Bang! Two!” “Bang! Three!” He chanted as he struck the frantic rabbits darting around, coming to him in blind panic. Each one that he hit fell without exception!
Lin Mo felt no pressure dealing with these harmless, frantically moving creatures. The steel balls shot from his slingshot were perfectly accurate. Although the range wasn’t far, the quick firing speed and easy aim allowed him to hit the rabbits directly in the forehead. Many didn’t even touch the ground before they met their end. In just a few minutes, he used up a bag of steel balls, managing to take down over thirty rabbits within seconds.
After exhausting his supply of steel balls, Lin Mo decided to join in the foot chase. The poor rabbits, though they leaped vigorously, couldn’t match the speed and agility of a Dragon Knight from another world. With his human-like strength, Lin Mo sent these rabbits flying left and right.
Meanwhile, the cooking team hurriedly processed the caught rabbits. They skinned and dismembered them in a frenzy, blood flowing everywhere. In just two to three hours, nearly four hundred rabbits were killed, and around one hundred were captured alive. The group’s achievements were truly considerable.
Except for a few particularly clever rabbits hiding in deeply concealed burrows, the rabbits near the base were thoroughly hunted. Among the thirty or so large men participating, none felt pity for the small animals. Each one was brutal in their actions.
The commotion grew louder as the spoils piled up, attracting others from the base to join the hunt. They formed a sweeping net that crossed over and over, fulfilling the phrase “waiting for a rabbit by the stump.” Some panicked rabbits even leapt into the cooking team’s pot!
By sunset, the rabbits at the airbase were unlikely to recover for two or three years. In addition to rabbits, over a dozen snakes and several badgers were caught, with over a hundred mice piled into a small mountain. The stench was overwhelming. One could only wonder about the madness of those hunting rabbits, going so far as to catch mice, which the cooking team received without reservation, asserting they had ways to handle them.
Boiling water filled pot after pot, and the removed pelts were hung like little flags. After clearing out the intestines and cutting up the meat, everything except what was needed for that night and the next day was smoked. The cooking team calculated their achievements per person, keeping a unified record, though most of the catch was used to supplement the base’s meals.
Over the following days, they made rabbit meat soup, soy sauce rabbit, stewed rabbit, and red-braised rabbit—showcasing their many culinary skills in a rabbit feast. Even the incidental dozen snakes were skinned to make wine, and their gallbladders were immersed in liquor and quickly devoured. Everyone knew there wouldn’t be enough of the fragrant meat, even with over a hundred mice turned into delicious chunks. Only a few bowls were saved for the base leaders, while the mid-level officers didn’t get a whiff of the aroma.
This grand rabbit feast could sustain the base for a week. Some still unsatisfied shouted about wanting to leave the base to hunt in the mountains. However, the commander of the base reprimanded them severely and dismissed the idea. A military base could deal with rabbits to ensure flight operations, but hunting in the surrounding areas made no sense. There was no way to silence the outrageous requests; trouble was bound to arise.
Lin Mo’s slingshot shone brightly during the rabbit-hunting mission. However, it got unknowingly taken away by an unknown quick-handed general, causing him much frustration.
After hastily devouring a few bites at the rabbit feast, Lin Mo, lost in thought, recalled Hao Dali’s orders from the morning and arrived at a blue-and-white European-style villa. It was now six fifty.
As he stepped into the high-ranking office of the base, Lin Mo felt a pang of nervousness and unease at the prospect of meeting the commander, wondering if he had recently made a mistake.
Or was some jerk trying to frame him? This was something Lin Mo had faced many times in another world.
Even though he sometimes joked with his fellow soldiers, when dealing with superiors, he always maintained a serious and earnest attitude. Military discipline applies universally, regardless of the world.
Lin Mo considered himself careful and cautious in both the Su Lan Empire’s Dragon Knight Corps and this world’s air force base. He had never stirred up trouble, and when trouble arose, he was never afraid to face it. He quickly calmed himself and raised his hand to knock on the walnut wood door of the commander’s office.
“Report!” Lin Mo announced loudly and powerfully, his voice reflecting unwavering military discipline.
“Come in!” a low, magnetic voice responded from within.
Lin Mo pushed the door open and stepped into an extremely spacious, brightly lit classical-style office. What stood out among the classical decor was a large electric retractable Chinese map hanging in front of an immense wall-mounted bookshelf. There was also a large, eight-legged table, which was completely empty. Yet, as Lin Mo looked closer, he gasped in surprise; the table was actually a massive touch screen displaying a combat simulation, with a 3D map and representations of red and blue fighter jets, all rendered with stunning realism.
What advanced technology! It far surpassed the illusions used by the mage corps!
Lin Mo knew this was a high-tech product unique to this world, far beyond anything an ordinary citizen could access or imagine. Military technology has always been one to three generations ahead of civilian tech.
The room’s style combined modern and classical aesthetics, creating an unfamiliar harmony, indicating the effort put into designing this office.
A sturdy soldier with graying hair was focused intently on the map on the table, occasionally pressing on the surface to adjust modules as if calculating various data. The bright, piercing light of his eyes told Lin Mo that the base’s highest-ranking officer, Commander Ma, was actually a major general.
Did a base need a high-ranking major general to be in charge of it?!
Thinking about that massive eight-legged display, Lin Mo suddenly remembered the stringent conditions they had to meet as pilots and the secretive location of this base. His position was certainly not as simple as it seemed.
Under normal training circumstances, there would be no way for Lin Mo and others to access fighter jets, especially brand new J-10s. The standard of this base was extraordinarily high, incomparable to any ordinary flight school.
“Report! Captain Lin Mo of Team One, Squad Three, Aircraft 11 reports to the commander!” Lin Mo firmly planted his feet on the dark red South African wood floor and saluted the silver-haired major general, clearly stating his formal number.
“Hello, Captain Lin Mo!” The major general lifted his head, his penetrating gaze almost as if it could X-ray through Lin Mo. With the precision of a textbook, he returned a salute.
His demeanor was regal, with a sharp gaze that could split the air. Lin Mo felt as though he had returned to the other world, facing the leader of a Dragon Knight Corps.
“Please sit; don’t be tense!” Commander Ma’s previously stern expression suddenly softened, becoming warm and approachable. He gestured for Lin Mo to take a seat, seemingly sensing Lin Mo’s underlying nervousness, and said, “Hehe, there’s nothing important today; we’re just chatting and catching up!”
“Of course!” Lin Mo, captivated by the major general’s aura, didn’t dare to be careless. This was a significant figure, comparable to the commander of the Dragon Knight Corps.
“Would you like something to drink? Coke? Sprite? We also have coffee!” Commander Ma walked to a small refrigerator in the room. After opening the door, he pulled out a can of energy drink and shook it at Lin Mo. “Young people love carbonated drinks.”
“Just tea, please!” Lin Mo pointed out the Kung Fu tea brewing on the desk, waiting for Commander Ma to get to business.
