Chapter 5: The Disturbed Hornet Nest: The Grand Battle!
“Misael, protect your knight! Damn it, you’re daydreaming again!” Gold Coin suddenly roared, thrusting its wings to rapidly shove the nearby fire giant dragon aside. Then it quickly folded its wings and dove down. Even the proudest dragon knew that in a situation like this, without the cooperation of their human knight partner, death was near. Its long dragon roar echoed as a reminder to the fire giant dragon Misael, who was just over a hundred years younger.
An ice spear, half the length of a dragon’s body, shot through the air with intense coldness, narrowly missing the spot where Gold Coin had just collided with Misael, only to continue sailing far away until it lost power and fell from the sky. What happened to the troops on the ground was beyond Morin and the others’ concern now.
Whoosh…
Only after a second or two did the sound of the ice spear slicing through the air reach them, as if it was recounting how dangerously fierce that attack had been, breaking the sound barrier and reaching them faster than the sound itself. Misael and Akka’s hearts raced wildly; these two were simply too reckless, especially on a battlefield where anything could happen.
On normal days, the golden giant dragon wouldn’t care about the life or death of Misael’s knight, but in combat, losing even a fraction of fighting strength could greatly shift the balance of power.
“Damn it! It’s those Texi bastards!” Seeing several small black dots barely visible beneath the extremely low dark clouds, Akka fumed. Misael raised his long neck and expelled several blazing blue fireballs towards them in retaliation, but as for whether they would hit anything, only the heavens knew.
“Gold Coin, charge!” Morin declared fiercely, stepping up his battle spirit. The earlier attack that came close to skewering Akka and Misael was clearly a planned ambush. Such a precise and targeted ice spear against the fire giant dragon could not have been shot by an ordinary person, especially when he noticed the icy spikes still clinging to Gold Coin’s wing tips.
“Charge!” Gold Coin shouted at Akka and Misael, who had just regained their focus. “Little fire dragon, provide fire support!” It flapped its wings intensely as its armor glistened, covered in sharp spikes. The golden giant dragon’s greatest feature was its ability to transform its body like a liquid metal, evolving into various weapons. At that moment, Gold Coin resembled a heavily armed porcupine, darting up towards the thick clouds in a unique manner mimicking the “Hunting Quail Trajectory” of a wind dragon. Though it could only muster one tenth of the effect due to not being of the wind element, it managed to compensate for the golden giant dragon’s usual lack of agility.
Two fireballs the size of human heads chased closely behind Gold Coin, fluidly following its movements in the air. Although Akka and Misael shared similar fiery and hot-headed personalities, they wouldn’t have become Dragon Knights without working together. At that moment, they executed Morin’s signature support attack, “Meteor Accompanying the Moon,” ensuring Morin’s safety while he piloted the charge, which required not just familiarity with Gold Coin’s flight trajectory but also bold and precise control as the two explosive fireballs accompanied the golden giant dragon ascending towards the thick clouds.
“Gold Coin, give them a taste of something fierce! Blade Charge!” Morin tightened his grip on the saddle, his light element battle energy swirling around him. A slight golden light began to glow as he extended his arm back, causing a massive, dazzling, two-handed slashing sword to launch out from the enormous scabbard on his back with a loud clang. Once a Dragon Knight closed in on an opponent, it was all about the battle skills of the knight riding atop the dragon.
The golden giant dragon emitted a gentle long roar as several long blades suddenly detached from its wings, shooting with incredible speed towards the distant shadows flickering in the clouds. The blades sliced through the air, leaving behind a lingering hum, matching the speed of the earlier ice spear attack. Controlling metal was a golden giant dragon’s specialty, as various ores and metals usually formed a crucial part of its arsenal. Shaping its body, transforming its armor, creating blades, and using its innate void magnetic field to launch long blades at foes were all trademark moves of the golden giant dragon.
From within the clouds came sharp, startled roars! Gold Coin’s seemingly casual ambush yielded unexpected results.
Several bolts of lightning crashed down from within the clouds. Gold Coin weaved back and forth, avoiding the strikes. Two fireballs following closely behind collided with a bolt of lightning as thick as a water barrel, bursting into two massive red dahlias, each over a hundred meters in diameter. They were stunningly beautiful.
“This weather is weird; it must be the Texi Empire’s doing. Thunderstorms work against me! Morin, hold on tight; if we fall, it’s not my fault! I’m charging in!” Gold Coin flapped its wings, dodging the continually crashing lightning. The densely clouded sky brewed more lightning than usual. With so many blades on its body, it attracted thunder like crazy. Despite the golden giant dragon’s innate void magnetic field defense, it couldn’t fully withstand the concentrated strikes of lightning.
Morin’s light element battle energy enveloped him, forming a lightly glowing shield. Countless electric snakes writhed across the surface, and he felt pricks of numbness, as though his movements were suddenly sluggish.
Fighting against lightning element opponents beneath the dark clouds was like battling against the forces of nature. They were too cunning, capable of arranging an environment favorable to themselves ahead of time. Utilizing the weather allowed them to exert maximum attack power, forcing both Morin and Akka to suffer a slight reduction in strength in this environment.
“Let’s charge up there and tear them all to shreds!” Morin’s eyes gleamed with battle spirit, the crimson cloak on his back billowing like a flag in the wind. Both the golden giant dragon and the dark giant dragon were renowned for their close combat prowess. While the dark giant dragon could leave their enemies intact or in pieces, the rampaging golden giant dragon was a brutal force that wouldn’t settle until its opponent was utterly pulverized.
“Gold Coin, close your eyes now and listen to my commands!” Morin shouted from atop the golden giant dragon. He had to maintain his status as a Dragon Knight, preventing the dragon flute from being retracted and turning him into a laughingstock. He constantly devised ways to command this golden giant dragon.
Even though Gold Coin harbored thoughts of disposing of its rider, it wouldn’t act irrationally on the battlefield. Without a knight’s assistance, its battle strength would drastically decrease, and the enemies would take advantage of a dragon left without a knight. As a proud dragon kin, especially the legendary golden giant dragon known as the strongest weapon in the hands of gods, it had no reason to flee. Once on the battlefield, the golden giant dragon consciously chose to fight alongside Morin, with no thoughts of shirking its duties.
After all, in combat, the golden giant dragon wouldn’t stoop to stabbing its comrade in the back unless a secret agreement with the enemy could be made, which was tantamount to seeking death. The honor of giant dragons forbade any collusion with their foes.
Boom…
A faint light shield erupted from Morin, quickly enveloping Gold Coin’s body in a golden glow, resembling a giant golden eggshell shooting upwards into the clouds. Suddenly, this pale-gold illuminated shell burst forth with blinding radiance, illuminating the world beneath as bright as high noon, making it impossible to open one’s eyes.
The dazzling light burst into the clouds, mingling with the clashing of weapons and the roars of massive beasts. Among the cacophony, a figure wearing deep blue armor fell from the clouds, leaving a trail of blood behind, like a shooting star plummeting to the ground. Without a mount and lacking the battle mage and sword saint levels of power, the fate of the Air Knight was tragically clear.
Then came the sudden screams of unidentified beasts and loud rolling thunder as long chains of lightning flickered between the clouds. Suddenly, Gold Coin’s body emerged briefly from the lower clouds, its claws gripping a massive bird covered in black iron feathers. Those who had sharp eyes on the ground would recognize this bird as the ninth-level flying giant beast, the Thunder Sparrow, often revered by noble families as a guardian beast, equipped with silver feathers that were as tough as steel and capable of controlling winds and thunder. Now, however, it struggled like a rag doll in the grasp of the golden giant dragon as Gold Coin’s body twisted, shredding it with its razor-sharp limbs.
A rain of blood and feathers fell to the ground as the Thunder Sparrow met its fate, revealing the fierce determination of the golden giant dragon to leave nothing behind.
Several hidden black dots within the clouds, sensing the danger, quickly scattered away. One griffin knight bore a shining silver blade in its arm, dripping blood as it fled the scene, a result of the blades Gold Coin had shot previously. A barrage of fireballs erupted from below the clouds, bombarding the fleeing figures relentlessly, their frantic escapes turning into a chaotic scene of flashing red light; the golden giant dragon Gold Coin’s fireballs clashed with bolts of lightning and disappeared in the fray. Meanwhile, Misael, the fire giant dragon, conjured two additional fireballs around Gold Coin as additional protection, while also carelessly launching fireballs around Gold Coin’s vicinity, emitting compressed fireballs with a bluish-white hue that radiated a dangerously powerful aura, significantly more potent than standard fireball spells.
“Damn it! These cowards are fleeing like rabbits! Morin! I want to take them all down!” After killing a Thunder Sparrow knight and injuring another, Gold Coin seemed eager for more, its wings trembling as its sharp blades extended with increasing density, boosting its flight speed.
Morin remained silent, his gaze like a sharp sword scanning the skies for the next target. The magnificent two-handed slashing sword in his hands shimmered with a hint of red; with a slight flick of his wrist, the red flash disappeared into the wind like a wisp of blood.
