Chapter 212: Will This Thing Fall Apart?
"Let’s go take a look!" Professor Yan nodded, eager to see what model the simulator was. After all, his apprentice was going to pilot a fighter jet, and as a design expert, he should help ensure safety; flying high in the sky, if something went wrong, no god or goddess could save them.
"Please follow me!" Engineer Liu led the team towards the doorway where they had entered, right across from the three large squares that housed the fighter jets.
"Hehe, a twenty-degree overload simulator, not bad," Professor Yan remarked as he spotted a flight simulator nearly the size of a room, even from a distance.
"Your eyesight is excellent!" Chen Haiqing immediately gave him a thumbs up, while Engineer Liu looked on in amazement. There were hardly more than a handful of people in the country who could identify the capabilities of this simulator at a glance.
"Twenty degrees?! That’s almost the same as real flying," Lin Mo gasped, his eyes sparkling. He had only played with a six-degree flight simulator at Base 7759 before, which was already considered very advanced equipment in the country.
This was a super realistic toy.
The cost of this simulator probably matched that of a real aircraft. Compared to the joystick setups of everyday gamers, this device was a dream come true for flight simulation enthusiasts.
Lin Mo opened the alloy box he was holding; inside were several thick manuals—a wealth of information on the fighter jet’s operation, warnings, and feature descriptions, far exceeding the content about the actual operation.
Most of the basic operational principles were shared, unless there were special features, such as the simplified version of the "monstrous" X-1. For Lin Mo, this was not a problem at all; as a designer, he knew the aircraft’s performance and functions very well, even being able to feel for the buttons with his eyes closed.
"Give it a try! It can simulate up to 3G overload," Chen Haiqing encouraged Lin Mo to test it first. He hadn’t seen his comrade since their initial flight training together and was curious how he had become such an air combat ace.
This flight simulator was no ordinary device; it was a specially developed module for pilots, featuring modularity for rapid adjustments and compatibility with the operation panels of currently active domestic fighter jets. Each button description was LED-lit, ready to change functionality at any moment.
Inside the simulator’s cockpit was a fully sealed three-dimensional space. Once inside, Lin Mo started the simulator and chose the cockpit style he was most familiar with, that of the "monstrous" fighter. The surrounding area glowed with white light as the three-dimensional screens adjusted, and the control panel transformed as if it were made of building blocks—everything changed, except for the seat, which remained the same.
Inside was the cockpit style Lin Mo knew best, exquisitely realistic. He put on the helmet, noticing that the transparent visor was three-dimensional, working together with the screens to create a highly realistic 3D effect.
The scene around him flickered, as if he were actually on an airport tarmac. He could hear the tower personnel speaking through the headset, seemingly reporting weather conditions. Lin Mo turned to observe his surroundings; aside from some distortion in minor details, it felt almost real.
"Cleared for takeoff!"
Just like a real takeoff procedure, after a series of self-checks, Lin Mo initiated the engine start. The cabin shook, producing simulated tremors and hidden sound units mimicking engine roar.
Lin Mo controlled the throttle, advancing the power, feeling a distinct push from his seat—it felt incredibly real!
Lin Mo marveled that the many combination screens could nearly rival his Light Mirror Technique array, giving an authentic sensation.
The aircraft began to sprint at full speed, moving rapidly, even quicker than a J-10. Suddenly, the aircraft lifted, dramatically angling upward into the sky, with the sound of rushing air clearly audible in his ears.
Lin Mo glanced to the side; as he moved his head, the helmet quickly recognized its position, and the simulator’s visuals changed. All the structures and objects within his helmet’s view rapidly shrank as he ascended.
Yes, that’s it! The "monstrous" aircraft with forward-swept wings truly excelled in aerodynamics, not only making it more agile but also requiring a shorter takeoff distance—ideal for complex and changing battlefield environments.
It felt like the first time boarding an aircraft, as he began to push the throttle for maximum thrust, raising the nose while executing rapid roll maneuvers upward into the sky. The altimeter readings soared, and the surroundings spun wildly: one thousand meters, two thousand meters, three thousand meters, four thousand meters… reaching an altitude of ten thousand meters before flipping to level flight.
Perfect! This was one of the classic Immelmann maneuvers, trading speed for altitude—a powerful setup, akin to gathering strength for a punch. While it was a basic technique, if timed correctly, it could triumph over defeat, and with his understanding and skills, he could make it more complex and varied.
Feeling the overload feedback in the cockpit, Lin Mo experienced an authentic sensation as if he were piloting a real fighter jet; excitement surged within him as he wildly yanked the control stick, initiating extreme maneuvering combo moves.
"System, are there any enemy aircraft? Release a few!" Lin Mo’s voice quickly prompted a response from the system’s voice module.
"Shall we enter battle mode?" The system instantly recognized the keywords "enemy aircraft" and "a few."
"Yes!"
"Encountering battle, deploying one enemy aircraft, model F-22."
"Not enough, that’s too few!"
An F-22 is not enough; at least a squadron is needed to enjoy it.
"Unable to recognize command!"
"Darn it! Is there a custom battlefield?"
"A custom battlefield can be selected! Do you want to choose?"
"Yes!"
This voice control system was clearly not as perfect as Lin Mo imagined. Compared to the Night Special Forces’ advanced computer system, it fell short by a mile. At least the Night’s system had an emotional recognition module and was continually improving, capable of recognizing multiple different phrases with similar meanings.
Lin Mo quickly set four F-22s, two F-35s, and two Su-47s as opponents; now that was truly exhilarating. The intense maneuvers made the entire simulated cockpit shake violently.
The only disappointing part was that the overload couldn’t reach the real high G-forces. The simulator’s maximum 3G overload felt like having just one-tenth of the seasoning packet when eating instant noodles—disappointingly bland.
Even so, 3G overload was still something that ordinary people could hardly endure; those with weaker constitutions might lose consciousness or even vomit.
The simulator roared into full operational mode, vibrating as if it were a real fighter jet soaring through the sky, making one think it might fall apart at any moment. To simulate overload, the components of the simulator had to endure real overload loads as well.
Inside the violently shaking cockpit, with one hand gripping the control stick tightly, Lin Mo’s other hand moved so quickly it looked like a blur, adjusting various switches while completely ignoring the blaring alarms filling the cockpit.
"Do you think this thing will fall apart?!" Professor Yan stared at the noisy simulator, which was far louder than anything in the entire workshop.
Given the overload simulation, there were numerous power devices inside, and even though it was a simulator, it was not something an average person could handle. Professor Yan felt a bit anxious watching it.
"It shouldn’t, right?" Although Chen Haiqing said this, his tone lacked confidence. He had used this simulator multiple times but had never seen it operate so intensely, constantly producing alarming sounds.
On a few large screens outside, displaying Lin Mo’s incredible maneuvers, it was like a performance. The enemy aircraft were quickly dismantled as Lin Mo executed smooth and continuous combo moves.
In martial arts, speed is unbeatable. Missiles and cannons are strength; the pilot’s flying skills make a significant impact in aerial combat.
Was this still the comrade who trained together as pilots?
They had all started equally, and just over a year had passed, yet this comrade’s level had risen to a point where Lin Mo had to look up to him.
What a terrifying individual—much like his not-quite-ready fighter jet.
This level of maneuvers had surpassed Professor Yan’s area of expertise; he only knew that his student had remarkable aerial combat skills—indeed, very impressive.
Wild, agile, and unpredictable, everyone could see a hint of a martial artist’s essence in the X-1 fighter’s maneuvers.
The super-close-range barrel roll S-attack—was that Wing Chun?
Many people rubbed their eyes, then widened them again; the simulator’s activity attracted quite a crowd in the workshop.
The dazzling maneuvers of the simulated X-1 on the screen left everyone in awe, even Chen Haiqing, who was also a pilot, couldn’t react in time.
The images on the screen inside the simulator changed rapidly, overwhelming the senses. A regular person would have been completely confused and exhausted by now.
But Lin Mo found joy in it, wildly piloting, maneuvering the aircraft through a web of cannon fire and exploding fireballs, continually executing extreme maneuvers while launching counterattacks.
The eight high-performance fighter jets, under the system’s control, were just barely able to match Lin Mo, but they couldn’t compete with his astonishing tactical imagination. From the moment the first F-22 was shot down, the scales of victory tilted in his favor.
Although the simulator was only configuring the X-1’s parameters, the input data couldn’t compare to the real “monstrous” aircraft. At that moment, Lin Mo’s maneuvers had reached an actual overload of 14G; thankfully, it was just a simulator.
The frantic alarm warned that the aircraft was about to break apart. If it were the real X-1, it would likely perform a breathtaking display of "flowers scattered by heavenly maidens" in the sky within a minute.
