Chapter 208: Practical Combat Units Lead to Rapid Promotions!
“Teacher, I’m here to help you!” The Dragon Knight didn’t have many special qualities, but he was strong. Lin Mo easily lifted the heavy suitcase.
“You came back quite quickly! It’s been months since we last met, and you seem to be in good spirits. Have you been promoted?” Professor Yan, missing his small disciple after so long, cheerfully let Lin Mo take on his burden.
In this day and age, it was truly hard to find a talented disciple who was hard-working and eager to learn. The limitations of education and work made the passing down of knowledge no easy task.
“Yeah, I’ve been promoted to First Lieutenant now. I aim to become a captain by next year, and by thirty, I hope to be a general.” Lin Mo nodded, hoping to make his teacher happy.
Professor Yan shook his head, finding Lin Mo’s humor amusing. “Do you think promotions are that easy? Without battles, even if you fly until you drop, you won’t climb to the top like little golden beans.”
“Hehe!” Lin Mo scratched the back of his head, grinning.
Some things weren’t ready to be revealed, and Professor Yan had no idea that his disciple was engaged in explosive fireball battles, even coating his aircraft in stars. After several fierce fights, promotions seemed to come as easily as the Long II rocket—if he continued fighting for a few more months, he might even get promoted again.
“I brought you over a dozen of the latest professional materials, all in English. You should be able to understand them.” Professor Yan had also come with some good resources for Lin Mo.
“Really!” Lin Mo beamed with joy. Whenever he met this teacher, he could always expect pleasant surprises.
“Oh, by the way, I haven’t asked; how did your leaders let you come out? Holidays in the military aren’t easy to get.” Professor Yan suddenly turned around, asking Lin Mo who was carrying two pieces of luggage.
“It’s a forced vacation! After long-term missions, we always get time off. I adjusted my schedule, and I haven’t used this month’s leave yet.” Lin Mo smiled, explaining that although flying as a pilot was dangerous, the benefits were quite good, especially with mandatory time off. If a pilot was unwell or fatigued, they couldn’t take to the skies.
Once they reached the airport exit, Lin Mo recognized someone from the welcoming crowd holding a sign with his and Professor Yan’s names. They appeared to be staff from the National Defense Star Aerospace Company.
“Hello, I’m Lin Mo, and this is my teacher, Professor Yan.” Lin Mo approached and greeted them.
“Hello! I’m Ma Jinghui, responsible for picking you up.” The young man, around twenty-seven or twenty-eight years old, was dressed sharply in a suit. He saw Lin Mo’s two suitcases and quickly offered, “Let me carry one for you. Is our first stop the lodging or the company?”
“Teacher, what do you think?” Lin Mo asked for Professor Yan’s opinion.
“Let’s go to the lodging first and drop off our things. There’s no rush,” Professor Yan decided. After all, he hadn’t seen anything impressive from the National Defense Star Aerospace Company (NDS) that would require so many experts to come and observe.
The vehicle that picked them up was a gray Passat. It drove for about three hours after leaving the airport before reaching their destination.
Along the way, Lin Mo noticed that some vehicles were trailing them from a distance, likely for security purposes. Professor Yan didn’t notice, and Lin Mo kept it to himself; such covert security actions were quite normal.
The location of the National Defense Star Aerospace Company was relatively remote, occupying vast land, but transportation was convenient. The accommodations arranged in the schedule were specially constructed guesthouses where senior engineers and experts typically stayed.
Though called a guesthouse, it was hardly inferior to a high-end hotel.
The facilities were excellent, with suites that included two bedrooms and a living room, covering about one hundred square meters. The rooms had a balcony and were fully outfitted with appliances, meeting at least a four-star standard, and everything was brand new.
Shortly after arriving, the fixed phone in the room rang. Lin Mo answered it and suddenly smiled with joy upon hearing the voice on the other end. “‘Three Yellow Chick,’ what are you doing here? Aren’t you on duty? Don’t talk nonsense; I bet you have a ton of excuses. Who would dare defy Young Master Chen’s orders? I see now that you’re not just a rich second generation, you’re clearly an official second generation and a super wealthy one! Come on, admit it, are you part of something like the Rothschilds or whatever big capital consortium—red capitalists?”
“Stop talking nonsense! Hurry up! Great food is being prepared. The reason I invited you here is not just so you can eat and drink for free. A pilot like you is hard to find! Come, come, help me as a test pilot for a few days, haha, I have something great to show you that you’re sure to love.” On the other end of the line, Lin Mo’s classmate and comrade, who came from the same “chicken coop,” Code Name “Three Yellow Chick,” Chen Haiqing, rambled before hanging up.
“Who was it?” Professor Yan was pouring hot water for two cups of bitter tea, noting that in his old age he had high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and other health issues. This condition worsened each year, but drinking some bitter tea could help cleanse toxins, and he had come to enjoy the taste.
“Speaking of which, you know him. ‘Three Yellow Chick’ is in the factory area and will come down shortly to pick us up. He’ll show us around the factory and then we’ll go for a meal.” Lin Mo said, amazed by the influence Chen Haiqing had behind him.
People really are compared against each other; just look at him! The factory is up and the prototype is just there. Meanwhile, I’m struggling to build a fighter jet, relying on base resources and patching together funding to merely assemble a skeleton that is far from a complete product! Not to mention the ongoing maintenance and parts replacement—every bit of it is a headache.
Envy, jealousy, but impossible to hate; it’s like they say online, this world is truly a time when you rely on your parents. If your dad isn’t good, you’ve already lost half the race just by being born!
Lin Mo didn’t realize his own achievements; just based on the current “monstrous” skeleton, that blueprint alone was already enough to astonish the world!
No one could single-handedly build a fighter jet!
After a brief rest, when Lin Mo and Professor Yan emerged from their guesthouse room, Chen Haiqing was waiting outside in an open Electric Cart.
“Hey, hey! Lin Mo, over here! Get in! Professor Yan, long time no see!” Chen Haiqing waved as the vehicle he drove could comfortably seat seven people since it was a trailer from the production base.
“Teacher, be careful.” Lin Mo fulfilled his role as a student, helping Professor Yan into the cart before taking the co-pilot’s seat. He playfully punched Young Master Chen, “How you arrange the afternoon’s activities is up to you.”
“Hey, don’t worry! I guarantee you’ll be surprised and satisfied! If you’re not, throw me up in the air and make me target practice!” Chen Haiqing replied with a grin, returning Lin Mo’s playful punch. After half a year, this guy was no longer the inexperienced rookie; he was now a well-known figure with high-level permissions in the system.
This guy led the “Dragon Knight Corps” and was notorious in Central Asia. His original title of “Azrael” had been buried in the past. If anything, it was Lin Mo’s loud mouth that did it. As a result, both fighter squadrons were barking loudly, intercepted by the Americans’ global surveillance network, scratching their heads in confusion about when such a thing had appeared.
“You’ve made First Lieutenant! That’s really great! After all, you’re with the ‘Night,’ and combat units lead to rapid promotions!” Chen Haiqing sighed enviously while driving.
He nearly got his promotion too, but Lin Mo and he missed their opportunity by just a hair during a return mission.
“Just one rank higher than you! What are you jealous of? The ‘Chicken Coop’ has combat missions too! Just keep a close watch, and I’ll be waiting to achieve captain status with you!” Lin Mo refuted Chen Haiqing’s exaggerated sentiment while patting his back, “We’re like brothers! I won’t expect you to salute me and say, ‘Good day, sir!’”
“Watch it! You’re going to give me internal injuries with those slaps!” Chen Haiqing grinned through gritted teeth from the Dragon Knight’s powerful slap, causing the vehicle to swerve unexpectedly—not to mention it was performing a snake maneuver to evade imaginary attacks.
“Wow, your factory is really huge!” Lin Mo said, observing as they passed through two fences with barbed wire. Behind the outer layer was a hundred-meter deep open area, followed by a nearly five-meter high thick wall. It appeared this structure had been built a long time ago as a significant national equipment production base, which was now being rebuilt. Therefore, he could see a mixture of old and new construction.
Both entrances had armed guards checking IDs, and Lin Mo even spotted patrolling military dogs. It seems the security forces were quite strong.
Seeing Lin Mo’s curious gaze, Chen Haiqing explained with a smile, “This used to be the address for the national 505 project’s secret factory established after liberation. It was abandoned later, and my family took it over for reconstruction. It also has an underground railway and large bomb shelters, and due to the 505 project’s special location, there are no villages or residents within a twenty-kilometer radius, making it relatively concealed. It’s quite spacious in there. Over half a year, we built fifteen large steel structure buildings, each two thousand square meters. They are all equipped with composite metal wear-resistant flooring, which cost significantly. We only started construction after securing orders and permits; otherwise, if it turns out to be unprofitable, we’d really lose out.”
“I heard rumors last time that your family built a factory to manufacture planes just because you became a pilot. That can’t be true, can it?” Lin Mo was genuinely envious. That was just too extravagant! What did it mean to be wealthy? This was it.
Opening a coffee plantation just to have a cup of coffee or starting a clothing factory for a single shirt—it was like that!
