Chapter 14: Who am I? Overlapping Fate
Lin Mo, a regular college graduate from Hangzhou, lived alone in a small apartment left to him by his parents after they divorced. He worked part-time to pay for his living expenses and tuition. Lin Mo was also a fan of cosplay and participated in a cosplay performance group called the "Divine Battle Squad." He was skilled at making props and had taken part in several cosplay events to earn some extra money. Just a week before his graduation, he was fortunate enough to pass the rigorous air force pilot selection test held every few years.
The selection process for college students was much stricter than for high school students. At first, Lin Mo was just lucky to get through the challenging political review and medical examination. A letter of acceptance soon arrived, and he was set to become an air force pilot in the near future.
The day after he participated in a cosplay competition, Lin Mo planned to head to the aviation university with his luggage for enrollment.
However, no one expected that just a few days earlier, while crossing an intersection, a business van ran a red light and sped toward him. A young girl next to Lin Mo was engrossed in her phone and didn’t notice the oncoming vehicle. Without thinking twice, Lin Mo pushed her out of the way, saving her but getting hit himself. He was thrown several meters away by the impact of the van.
The driver of the van seemed shocked and, surprising everyone, didn’t get out. Instead, he turned the car around and hit the gas, speeding away without stopping. The witnesses didn’t even have time to remember the license plate number.
Two people crossing the street rushed to help Lin Mo, who had a few torn clothes and some scrapes that bled slightly but was otherwise coherent. After resting a bit, he managed to get back on his feet, feeling fortunate that his injuries weren’t serious. He was eager to prepare for the cosplay competition and had no desire to spend time in a hospital.
The girl he saved didn’t even say thank you and vanished as quickly as the van did. Lin Mo didn’t mind; perhaps she was just too frightened to speak.
Feeling lucky, Lin Mo and the two witnesses only cursed the van that had fled and reported the incident to the nearby assistants. They went their separate ways, confident that the insurance company would compensate him for any damages once the police found the van. To Lin Mo, it didn’t matter what happened to the driver; the process would take care of itself.
Lin Mo thought he was unhurt, but the impact was more severe than it appeared. He had internal injuries that worsened over time. Even when experiencing small symptoms, he dismissed them, believing that if he had passed the pilot physical, he must be fine. If only he had gone to the hospital right then for a thorough check-up—surgery, injections, and medications could have healed him in two to three months. But he overlooked everything.
On the day of the cosplay competition, Lin Mo, just leaving his place, felt the internal injuries explode into a crisis. Dressed like a warrior and about to call someone, he suddenly collapsed in an alley. By the time he realized that this was related to the car accident, it was already too late to regret it.
At that moment, a dark portal appeared in the alley behind him, swallowing all the light and casting a shadow over the sunlit street. Suddenly, a flash of golden light surged from the darkness, seeming to wrap around a human figure that charged toward Lin Mo. In an instant, their forms merged, the particles of their bodies dispersing and blending together in a hazy mist, as if losing some aspects and gaining others.
The portal came and went quickly, barely lasting a moment. The alley returned to its bright state as if nothing had happened, except for the figure on the ground, whose armor had completely changed in that brief instant.
In the unseen, perhaps a divine force was controlling everything, merging with what was left of Lin Mo’s memories. Two individuals from different worlds intertwined, experiencing a synchronization of souls that felt much deeper than a simple resonance. This could be fate—two representations of the same person from different worlds aligning because of the great laws of existence.
Morin stood still on the riverbank, gazing at the dim lights of the city across the water. He took out a metal coin from the dark compartment of his armor. The dragon egg from the dragon kin was much taller than a seven-year-old child. He certainly didn’t believe a gold coin would produce such a small egg, especially since it belonged to a male giant dragon. Though the dragon was not present, there might be a profound connection between the golden egg and the coin.
When Morin and Lin Mo merged, the internal injuries and original wounds vanished. At the same time, Morin, who had nearly reached the ninth tier of battle energy, found that only a faint trace of it remained. The powerful strike on stage had drained nearly all his energy, reminding him of his once high-level techniques that rivaled those of the Divine Court’s holy warriors; perhaps this was the price for healing his injuries. There truly is no free lunch in this world, and Morin fully agreed with that sentiment.
This was a strange world. Morin’s first impression was that the air was poor, and while the food seemed exquisite, it felt less genuine than it appeared. The way of life was entirely different; imperial power was long ignored, and social status could only be measured by wealth. Relationships between people were often strategic, even slicker than those of some imperial cities’ officials.
War was grander than ever. The age of cold weapons was gone, but ordinary people could quickly become fighters thanks to advancements in tools. The creativity here was astonishingly developed, almost leaning toward extreme outcomes, as if he were destined to join the aerial forces of this country.
In the skies, mounts were not giant dragons or Thunder Sparrows, but mechanical structures called “airplanes,” which equaled or even surpassed the speed and attack power of Morin’s original world. The highest strategic force, known as a “nuclear warhead,” could obliterate the entire world, yet, like the high officials of the empire, it was used with utmost caution, for even the most reckless tyrants wouldn’t dare wield instruments that could destroy themselves too.
A loud boom echoed…
A white water line surged from the river, flowing westward. Several people in red armbands yelled at Morin from the riverbank, frantically waving their glow sticks and speakers blaring: “The tide is coming! Everyone on the embankment, come back quickly! Run!”
The river patrol team. Morin recognized their identity from Lin Mo’s fragmented memories but didn’t pay much attention. When he trained his physical strength, he stood bare on slippery rocks by the sea in a storm, swinging his Dragon Slayer sword against towering waves without budging an inch; he wasn’t scared of this little tide.
Known far and wide, the tidal waters of the Qiantang River claimed countless lives each year, building unstoppable waves that rushed forward like a herd of galloping horses. A long white line of tidal water stood out starkly against the yellow river, rising higher as it approached the narrowing banks, occasionally surging over the barriers and sending waves crashing dozens of meters high.
“That kid is done for!” an older member of the patrol team exclaimed, gazing at the figure on the tide-blocking dam. The dim light and his old eyes made it hard for him to see Morin’s armor; otherwise, he might have been startled.
Perhaps in another world, Akka and Captain Geldael had successfully escaped the kill radius of the “Absolute Spatial Prison.” As for the emperor of the Su Lan Empire, Morin could no longer pledge his loyalty. He bid farewell to the brothers of the Dragon Knight legion.
Morin slowly turned around, realizing that the old world had completely left him behind. He could only live on in this world as Lin Mo; the power of the great forbidden spell of the “Absolute Spatial Prison” either shattered everything in its radius or permanently banished it into chaotic space. Maybe there were other lucky ones like him scattered across various worlds, but for countless dimensions, finding a way back was nearly impossible.
