Chapter 113: Captain Lin, It’s Old Pan!

With a whoosh, a strong gust of wind rushed in, and a huge fist came flying towards Lin Mo’s head. The other men followed suit, throwing punches and kicks at Lin Mo all at once.

Just as the thought left their lips, Lin Mo sprang into action. He lightly tapped the ground, and with a swift roll, he dodged the incoming fists, leaving the men to grasp at air. As they turned to continue the attack, they froze in fear, their eyes wide with terror as they looked at Lin Mo.

A black 92-type 5.8mm military pistol appeared in Lin Mo’s hand, aimed directly at them.

“Don’t move! Don’t think of it as a toy; this is the real deal! Anyone brave enough can step forward and test it,” Lin Mo said, holding a bag of food in one hand and the pistol in the other. This wasn’t a toy made by Gold Coin; it was a genuine sidearm for fighter pilots, a self-defense weapon authorized for Lin Mo to carry by "Night."

“Pfft! You really think you can scare us? I don’t believe you; if you’re brave, shoot!” The young man who had spoken to Lin Mo before clearly underestimated him, assuming this casual-looking guy holding a plastic food bag was no threat.

“Brothers, go! Break his arms and legs for daring to scare me with a toy gun! Damn it, you’ll learn who I am today!” The man cocked his neck and lunged at Lin Mo.

Bang!

It was as if a kid pulled off a prank, suddenly activating a powerful lighting cannon.

The man collapsed to the ground, and the others who had been about to attack froze again, trembling in fear.

A toy gun? Seriously? It was clear as day that this was the real thing!

The gun emitted a light wisp of smoke from its muzzle, and the brass casing clinked to the ground, rolling gently. There was no way this could be fake.

“Ah!” The leader cried out in pain, clutching his leg as he collapsed to the ground, gasping for breath, “A real gun! Damn it, how did this become a real gun?!” He had been shot right through the leg.

To be fair, the 92-type pistol was not yet fully issued in the military, and the 5.8mm caliber was typically reserved for officers above the regimental level. There were hardly any replicas available on the market; most people only knew about the 54-type pistol.

“Brother, which side are you from?!” The man realized he had encountered someone formidable and could only hope the young man wouldn’t kill them all. Armed with nothing but batons and knives, they were no match for this young man with a gun.

“Scram! If you don’t leave, I’m calling the police,” Lin Mo warned, shaking the gun slightly. “Next time I see you, I’ll remember all your faces!”

To Lin Mo, this group of apparent troublemakers was just a minor interlude; compared to the ruthless bandits in his last mission, these guys seemed like harmless babies and hardly warranted any concern.

The group lifted their injured leader and fled, not even bothering to exchange threatening words. They fully understood that Lin Mo would not hesitate to shoot them there and then.

“What?! He has a gun! Damn it! Fine, if it’s too shady here, let’s do things the legal way. You brought this on yourself,” Li Yuan seethed as he hung up the phone at home, anger flaring up anew after just getting a slightly better mood.

Finding Lin Mo’s address was not hard; many of his classmates from university were aware. Li Yuan initially planned to gather some friends to properly deal with Lin Mo and give him a warning. He had not expected that the guy would be armed and, worse yet, that he would actually fire the gun. Didn’t he realize that was illegal?

Is it illegal for the military to carry guns? Clearly not; being unarmed is the real crime.

Knock! Knock! Knock!

Just as Lin Mo was about to dig into his dinner, he suddenly heard someone yelling from outside, “301, gas inspection!”

It seemed that his gas hadn’t been checked in a while, but since he had been away for months, he hadn’t used it. He rose to his feet and walked to the door, frowning as he sensed that there were quite a few people outside, their breaths tense.

“Is it the police?” Lin Mo asked before opening the door.

He was met with astonished faces of plainclothes officers, along with several fully armed police hiding nearby, positioned on both the upper and lower staircases as if ready to spring into action. Yet Lin Mo had already exposed their presence by simply opening the door.

“Don’t move, police!” Their shouts finally came, the commands ringing out, and numerous dark gun muzzles pointed directly at Lin Mo. They stood trained and steady, not even flinching.

Lin Mo slowly raised his hands. “I am a licensed gun owner, and I am an active-duty soldier!”

“Active-duty soldier?!” One of the officers looked shocked. Seeing Lin Mo’s calm demeanor made him believe there was no deceit. Still, the gun remained aimed at Lin Mo. “Don’t move! Where are your gun and gun license?”

Several police officers rushed into the room, forming a tight circle to monitor Lin Mo’s every move. It was clear they wouldn’t lower their guard so easily.

Lin Mo gestured towards the left side of his chest, “The officer’s ID and gun license are inside!”

One officer cautiously reached into Lin Mo’s clothing, feeling around until he pulled out Lin Mo’s 92-type pistol, along with a small black book and a similarly sized red book.

The officer checked to ensure the gun was safely secured before handing it to another person. The policeman opened the two small notebooks to compare Lin Mo’s appearance and check the serial number on the gun, examining it closely.

“Sorry, we need to verify a few things first!” The officer smiled at Lin Mo but did not lower his guard, passing the notebooks and gun to others clearly designated to verify their authenticity.

Perhaps due to the thorough review, someone downstairs had brought a laptop and logged into a classified website, seemingly able to check the gun license number. By entering the number, they quickly found the corresponding individual’s information.

“The data is correct! He is qualified to carry a firearm,” the voice from the walkie-talkie soon confirmed.

With the gun, license, and registration checked, the officer let out a sigh of relief and returned the gun license, officer’s ID, and the 92-type pistol back to Lin Mo. “Sorry for the trouble! Someone reported an illegal firearm! I hope we didn’t disturb you!”

Implied in his words was the possibility that Lin Mo might be on a special mission.

“It’s alright! Do you want to come in and sit down?” Lin Mo asked, taking the gun and tucking it back into his holster.

“No, no! Someone reported a firearm. Please help us record a statement and just note down your officer’s ID number,” the officer instructed his fellow officers and the plainclothes personnel. “Dismissed! All clear!”

Just as quietly as they had arrived, the scene was cleared after taking down the report, and the officers quickly withdrew, a false alarm after all.

Perhaps under orders not to pry into Lin Mo’s situation, peace resumed, and the neighborhood committee sent no one to inquire. Even when Lin Mo stepped out the next day, no one looked at him strangely, as if everyone in the know had treated him like a police officer, and it was normal for police to carry guns.

As soon as he closed the door and hadn’t even started his dinner, the ringtone on Lin Mo’s left wrist chimed! Gold Coin was still handling Lin Mo’s phone business 24 hours a day. He brushed his hand across his left wrist, revealing a black iPhone 5. His thumb slid across the screen, connecting the call.

“Hello, this is Lin Mo!”

“It’s Mom! Is there something up? Oh…… oh…… I understand, but I don’t want to sell for now. No other reason, just that I’ve gotten used to living here and I can always come back…… Yes, that’s right, no need to think about it; I’m not short on money, just enough is good, yes.”

The call ended.

His father, Lin Yuanfang, had been scolded harshly by He Yuejiao and no longer mentioned the house. However, Yang Lian refused to give up on Lin Mo’s property and directly called Lin Mo’s phone. To Yang Lian’s surprise, Lin Mo was not the na?ve youth she expected. Instead, he was firm and resistant to her advances.

In this regard, Lin Mo believed his mother’s words and sensed that Yang Lian was not a simple woman.

As soon as he hung up the phone, it rang again. Lin Mo assumed Yang Lian had come up with another excuse and considered hanging up, but he noticed the call was from an unknown number. Still, he answered, bringing the phone to his ear.

“Captain Lin, this is Captain Pan!”

“Captain Pan! How did you get my number?” Lin Mo was puzzled. This phone number had only been activated for less than two days, yet Aircrew Group leader Pan Rongyong had already found him.

“Ha! Did you forget what we do? Your ID number for the phone card was specifically recorded. I asked Old Xie to look it up, and he found it right away; it wasn’t difficult at all.”

It turned out that the Intelligence Group had arranged a special ID for Lin Mo, as he couldn’t be carrying his officer’s ID around everywhere. Some large websites, information service providers, and communication service providers often have special access for security departments, making it quite easy to look up personal data. While these backdoors may be open, they all require stringent encryption verification devices and specific communication standards.

“You’re looking for me in such a hurry; does something special happen?” Lin Mo thought something had gone awry at the base, signaling the end of his vacation.

“Nothing serious, don’t worry! If it were really urgent, I wouldn’t be the one contacting you. I have two pieces of news: one is good news, and the other is bad. Which one do you want to hear first?” Pan’s straightforwardness was unexpected as he seemed to be enjoying building suspense.

“Let’s hear the bad news first. I still haven’t eaten dinner, so don’t ruin my appetite.” Lin Mo was annoyed, not wanting him to drag it out any longer.
